Wright Close to Deal
Wright Close to Deal
Wednesday, 2nd May 2001 09:10

Town keeper Richard Wright is close to signing a new deal with Town. Last night his agent Jonathan Barnett met with David Sheepshanks to negotiate Wright's new contract. Wright is the only one of the younger first team Town players not to have signed a long-term deal.

Wright has just one year left on his current contract and only negotiated a one year extension last summer. Barnett said of the negotiations: "We have had further talks and things are progressing very well. Richard is a top goalkeeper and has consistently made it clear he wants to stay at Ipswich Town."

George Burley and Tony Mowbray were at Carrow Road on Saturday reportedly to watch Andy Marshall and Darel Russell. Russell has been linked to Town before and the midfielder is considered one of Norwich's prize assets.

With Mike Salmon on the way in the summer Town might be looking for another keeper to back-up Richard Wright. It is likely that Marshall played his last game at Carrow Road at the weekend as he is yet to sign a new contract and is apparently anxious to leave on a Bosman.

On deadline day Town made a move for Norwich's Lee Marshall, but the price was considered too high and Leicester signed him.

More names have ruled themselves out of the sponsorship race. The Britannia said that although they were interested the price was too high while BT and Carling are also reported to have denied that they are the name on Town's shorts for next season.

Siemens and Virgin are now being mentioned as well, but to us Eastern Energy looks the most likely contender. All is likely to be revealed this morning.

Town's reserves play Charlton this afternoon (3pm KO) with Richard Naylor and Mark Burchill looking to impress the management. Marcus Stewart, according to some reports, is out of Monday's game with Manchester City, although others say he is merely doubtful. Both strikers will want to put themselves in the frame.

Squad: Pullen, Croft, Karic, Nicholls, Miller, Brown, Van Eijk, Abidallah, Naylor, Burchill, Friars, Logan, Kelly, Moffat, Graaven and Claes.
