Burley Rules Out More Names
Burley Rules Out More Names
Wednesday, 6th Jun 2001 15:45

George Burley has ruled out the link with Nottingham Forest's David Prutton and a number of the other players who have been mentioned in connection with Town.

Of the Prutton story Burley said: "I have no interest whatsoever in Prutton. Some of the stories flying about at them moment are ridiculous. People are just pulling names out of a hat."

Prutton was linked after the Town boss admitted yesterday that he had failed in a bid to bring in a player from the lower leagues. Burley said: "The bid we made was for a young midfield player for the lower leagues. I wanted to bring him into the club and hoped to improve him, but his club is adamant that he is not for sale and I think that is the end of it."

Two of the potential "young midfield player(s) from the lower leagues" that were possibly Burley's target were Matt Lockwood and Hartlepool's Tommy Miller, a former Town trainee. However, the Town boss has crossed these off the list.

Burley is off to watch a World Cup qualifier this evening with some sources suggesting he is to watch 25-year-old Danish international midfielder Martin Jorgensen. Jorgensen plays for Udinese and is rated at the £10 million mark. Can't see it happening myself. The Town boss is also reported to have had had representatives watch Jorgensen's countryman Thomas Gaardsoe, also a midfielder, play for their U21s last night.

The Town boss says he will be watching a lot of football in the near future: "Our own season may be over but there is still a lot of football to be covered. Apart from the internationals, the seasons in Spain, Italy and Scandinavia are still going on, so things are still ticking over.It is virtually an all-year situation for our scouts and I am still looking to add a couple more players before we start again in August."

Town have arranged language lessons for new signing Pablo Couñago with a teacher who comes from Spain who is based locally. The Spaniard, who speaks no English, joins Town on July 1st.

George Burley said of the Couñago deal: "I was aware of him before I saw him score twice against England in Birmingham a few months ago. Our scouts had seen him and filed good reports. We followed him, did our homework and it was a bonus to discover we could get him on a free. We have to face facts - we can't sign the top-quality players who cost £10 -£15 million. We need to be ahead of the game and work very hard to get players we can afford."

Today's Do You Remember? man is Eddie Spearrit who graced the Blue Shirt in the late sixties. He is also Hannah from 5 Club Steps' uncle (something like that). Recall Eddie's time at Town by following the link on the Message Board: http://www.twtd.co.uk/messages
