Garvan and Stead Could Still Play for Town
Garvan and Stead Could Still Play for Town
Wednesday, 26th Aug 2009 12:55

Town boss Roy Keane says it is wrong to suggest that Owen Garvan and Jon Stead will not play for the Blues again on the basis that they weren’t in the squad at Peterborough last night. Earlier in the week, Keane said that he had told some members of his squad that they would be unlikely to play for him again.

An evidently angry Keane said: “Colin Healy and Damien Delaney were not in my squad for the Hawthorns but they were back last night.

“You cannot write off the Ipswich careers of Owen and Jon on the back of them not being at Peterborough.”

The Town manager also dismissed a claim that Alan Quinn was amongst those being cast aside: “I read that Alan Quinn was also on his way out. But he was in my team last night and he will back up that he has not been told I am thinking about letting him go.”

Meanwhile, Olympiakos are lining up a loan move for ex-Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos, according to reports in Greece.

Last week Keane said that the chances of Dos Santos returning to the Blues on loan from Spurs were “Very, very, very slim” despite numerous links in recent weeks.

Dos Santos has previously been mentioned in connection with Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Manchester City and Inter Milan this summer.

Sounds like a bit of a shambles. So there were supposed to be some players who would never play again. And who are they? Err well in fact there is none.

This is obviously an Irish thing : Magilton did much the same thing on several occasions last season i.e. having a post-match 'rant' about lack of quality, commitment etc and making broad statements about players having had enough chances. By 2 days later he had always thought better of it and would then try to back-track when interviewed.

I did not want Keane here, and I believe that he will 'walk' very very soon, but the reality is that the present squad is well short of the quality that we need to win promotion, and no manager in the world will turn them into what we need. Part of it is lack of ability, but more of the time it is a p***-poor attitude from so many of them. Trotter, for instance, (who's father I know) should be sweating blood every game to give thanks for still having a job here, but he typifies the attitude of many of them "I play for Ipswich Town ; they were great once ; therefore I don't need to make any effort ; why? cos I play for IPSWICH TOWN". What's the answer? If I knew that I'd be a football manager earning bucket-loads for doing very little ....

Am I the only one thinking that it is pretty much a brand new side that just needs to play together, Keane keeps chopping and changing the side every game. How can you get any continuity when playing a different team every game-ok some where forced with the absences of Norris and Peters but the same back four havent played together for two consective games, same goes with midfield and up front which I put the blame on Keane for that one so that is the first issue that needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.

I have no doubt that Keane is the man to take us forward, we just need a settled team who plays week in, week out.

As for Stead and Garvan-well Stead can count himself unlucky, top scorer last season and when he has started this season he has been played as a lone striker which we all know he is far better when played with a partner up front so I still think he is a good asset to have on the books but if and here is the the vital bit, "IF" Keane has really said to Stead that he can go then his loyalty will have instantly gone from the club and he will be useless to us now which with our lack of striking options at the moment could be a monumental problem.

As for Garvan, I am really undecided on him-I think on his day he can ping balls around left, right and centre and can score a good goal from distance but the majority of time he looks slow, shys away from tackles and has a problem tracking back so I think if we got a decent offer for him then I wouldnt be to upset to lose him but there is no point at all in selling him unless we have someone definite to replace him of a higher quality.

There's stuff going on behind the scenes at the club that we never will know about.
The way Supple departed suggests all is not well. If he had simply 'fallen out of love' with the game surely he would have given a bit more notice of his intention to quit. To make his announcement and then be gone so quickly leaving the club to have to scrap about to find a replacement is not the way things should be done.
Six months ago I was asked why I was still enthusiastic about supporting Ipswich. I replied that the future held promise due to the likelihood of the team being built around Garvan, Haynes, Rhodes and Smith. I am consequently gutted at what's happened since. Many refer to Robson's early days and the way he dealt with players. The difference is that he sorted out the 'old school' - seasoned professionals. RK is moving out the young players, those that should be nurtured for the future.

Keane needs to get this week out of the way, make his signings/sales & stick with his best 11 players for more than 60 minutes - the team needs to gel..i.e..they need a good 8-10 games together/then make your changes Roy if things aren't going to plan.

Seems to me that Keane craves attention, constantly shouting his mouth off to the press. He can't make a decision and is forever blurting stuff out and backtracking. Plus he keeps changing the team around, giving players 45 minutes here and there to "impress". Stead scores goals and can be a big asset and Garvan is our most creative player but is suffering for not playing the game like Keane did. Fortunately Keane will most likely walk as the going gets tough and we can stop recruiting ex Irish internationals, Man United reserves and average Sunderland players. There are other players to choose from Roy.

All the players especially Owen Garvan need encouragement and direction. They don't get it from Keane who's remote and totally lacking in man management skills. We have a demoralised squad who are all looking for a move.
