Stead and Wood Swap Deal Failed?
Stead and Wood Swap Deal Failed?
Thursday, 3rd Sep 2009 08:41

Town tried to swap Jon Stead for Sheffield Wednesday central defender Richard Wood in the closing hours of the transfer window, according to a report this morning. Earlier, Wood had been tipped to be on his way to Portman Road in an £800,000 move.

Talks are understood to have continued throughout Tuesday regarding Wood’s switch to the Blues, although the former Wednesday skipper is now said to be ready to sign a new deal at Hillsborough.

Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford has commented on the Wood situation on the Owlstalk forum, neither confirming nor denying that the move had been on the cards: “As has been referenced in this thread, we have said nothing on this specifically as there is nothing new to say.

”If we commented on every piece of crap journalism and every bit of agent funny business we would get no work done.”

Wood was first mentioned in connection with a the Blues back in June, while Stead was also linked with moves to Doncaster Rovers and Crystal Palace during the transfer window and may well leave Portman Road after the emergency loan window opens next Tuesday.

I feel a bit sorry for Steady - he seems to have become RK's scapegoat for our poor start to the season.

I thought he was far from our worst player against the Baggies (always showed for the ball, held it up pretty well AND created our best chance playing the through ball to Wickham); was surprised to see him hauled off at half-time, and I'll be disappointed if he's shipped out...

I sort of agree with you blueboots. But I dnt think he is RKs scapegoat its just that stead is probably our most sellable asset.

I think its a simple case that he is now dropped down to 5th choice striker behind Pablo, Priskin, Wickham, Walters and would like to get regular football. Its a shame he had that head clash on Saturday, so soon after coming on, as he looked like he was up for proving a point.

Lets face it, hes not a bad lad and banged a few in last season - a lot of the time coming off the bench!

I wish him luck if he stays or if he goes on loan.

IMO, Stead's heart isn't in it any more, as indicated by his performances this season, especially against Preston. Richard Wood is a former skipper for Sheff. Wed., and would add greatly to my confidence with his addition to our back 4.
Being prepared to lose Stead may also indicate that Walters could be pushed up front, especially with Edwards and Rosenior joining.
The Wood deal isn't over yet, I'll bet.
