Town Announce Schedule for Newcastle Game
Wednesday, 23rd Sep 2009 16:50

Town have announced the schedule for Saturday’s game with Newcastle United which will see the North Stand renamed the Sir Bobby Robson Stand in honour of the legendary Blues manager.

Lady Elsie Robson and around 40 Town stars of the past - including George Burley, Mick Mills, Frans Thijssen, Kevin Beattie, John Wark and Allan Hunter - will rechristen the stand in a ceremony held at half-time.

At 4.15 representatives from both clubs and the mayors of Ipswich and Newcastle will place wreaths on the statue of Robson in Portman Road, while the scarves and shirts which were left by fans in the weeks after his death will be returned to the monument. Former Blues skipper Mick Mills will place a wreath on behalf of Robson’s players.

The ex-players and staff will be introduced to the crowd at 5.15pm before Abide With Me is sung by Laura Wright from the All Angels operatic group. Prior to the 5.30pm kick-off, there will be a minute’s applause.

At half-time, Lady Elsie and sons Mark and Paul will cut ribbons which will release 709 blue and white balloons, marking Robson’s games in charge of the club.

Prior to the match, from 3.30pm, Suffolk Punch horses will be in Alderman Park.

What a fitting tribute to such a great charismatic man. Looking forward to a rousing occasion, and I'm sure the fans will make it a memorable day for the Robson family! Sing your hearts out for Sir Bobby!

I must agree that a minute of silence shows far more respect than a minute of applause. I would rather think of the great man fondly and privately than, inanely, follow the crowd in making a noise to obliterate my private, reverential, thoughts; - am I clapping as loud as my neighbour? - am I less respectful if I clap softer? - the idea of a minute's applause is really quite silly!

I should also add that we have not yet honoured ITFC's greatest manager enough. An Alf Ramsey Stand, at least, should be our priority. We tend to forget Sir Alf's achievements - taking ITFC, and England, to the summit that RR never quite achieved, unfortunately, - and Sir Alf has been treated poorly by all concerned after his sacking by the F.A. (I wonder what those initials stood for in his mind?).

To those lucky souls who met him, Sir Alf was a complete "Gentleman", and an inspiration, at all levels, to Our Club. In fact, without Sir Alf, we would not be such a very special team, and the Great RR could not have been as close to our hearts as he now is, a manager following a unique and, mostly for our opponents, a triumphant history.

I will be thinking of all this on Saturday, as well as our many absorbing and inspiring games under Sir RR's management, as I visit PR for a rare chance of seeing my beloved team; I happen to live in Glasgow, so my visits are rare to my beloved Suffolk, sadly.

I also put in a request for a minutes silence, more appropriate.
