Keane: Unbelievably Bad Goals
Keane: Unbelievably Bad Goals
Saturday, 26th Sep 2009 21:51

Boss Roy Keane once again bemoaned his side’s defending as the Blues lost 4-0 at home to Newcastle United. The Town manager felt his team conceded “unbelievably bad goals” as his team’s winless league run stretched to nine matches.

Keane said: "The game was dead and buried by half-time. We conceded some unbelievably bad goals and we just have to defend better.

"I don't know if Nolan has scored a hat-trick before but he won't get an easier chance to get one. He must have thought it was Christmas.”

The Blues boss says individual errors have been costing Town all season: "We started OK but the first goal was a bad goal to give away. The lad Nolan scored loads of goals from set pieces at Bolton, yet we let him have a free header.

"It was bad defending for the second goal as well and that knocked the confidence of the players and it was always going to be hard from that point, given the experience of the Newcastle players and their defensive record this season.

"If we are opened up with good play then fair enough, but we have been giving goals away from the start of the season and it's unacceptable."

Keane had no complaints about the boos which greeted the final whistle: "I'm not daft, a lot of supporters voiced their opinions at the end but that is fair enough. They pay their money and they are entitled to that. But we will keep going.

"We knew it was a big day for the fans and I thought they were outstanding today. It's very easy to support your team when you are winning every week but the vast majority of the fans stayed right behind the team to the end and hopefully they will see that we have young players out there that need their backing.

"We are short of confidence and we need them to keep behind the team and they did that.”

Keane says the various tributes to Sir Bobby Robson were not a distraction for his players: "It didn't affect the team, what affected them was conceding the second goal so quickly after the first.

"It should have been something to enjoy, there was a good energy in the stadium but we keep giving teams a helping hand.

"You have to cope with set pieces, it's basic stuff. There are no magic wands and confidence comes with results. The longer this run goes on then the harder it will get.

"We have our pride and it has been massively dented. It is hard to take, but we have the chance to start to put it right against Sheffield United on Tuesday.

"But if we give goals away like we did today, we will get beat on Tuesday. There is no doubt about that."

Newcastle caretaker-boss Chris Hughton felt his side put in a display which was a worthy tribute to Sir Bobby Robson: "This group of lads were all at the memorial for Sir Bobby on Monday and that was an emotional occasion.

"The players were delighted to attend and we all tried to put on a performance for Sir Bobby. It was a special result and a special performance.

"It's a wonderful feeling to go in at half-time with the cushion we had and it doesn't happen very often.

"It's a massive boost to go top. The most important thing is that we are fighting at the right end of the table.

"There are a lot of teams around us who are not dropping many points so to go top is testament to this group of lads."

There is no strike force in oue team whatsoever. What little came from Pablo ws smothered. We now need to win 2 games to get of the relegation zone and we have a -11 goal difference

That is the second most embarrassing result after the 9-0 and I've seen quite a few! It was obvious Magilton's squad couldn't cut it and as the bulk of these people remain at the club (RK only got rid of fringe players) its blindingly obvious they are no good as it is also blindingly obvious we need a defence AND a captain that won't let anyone get away with performances like that. Appalled and embarrassed.

I've been one of those that has said we need to give Keane time, but at what stage do we say enoughs enough?? Todays performance was as bad as weve seen, Balkestein is just not good enough, Delaney is crap. We have no one who "leads" the team. There is no link between defence & midfield which is why we are under the cosh for long periods, likewise there is no link between midfield & attack, explaining why we create so little, when we do create anything we have a carthorse called Priskin playing up front on his own! (yes its keanes formation but this bloke surely has to be the worst striker we have had at the club in recent memory)

We have all recognised since before the start of the season that we need at least 1 new centre back & 2 new strikers, yet still 2 months into the season we still need 1 new centre back & 2 new strikers!!

Marcus Evans has either got to give Keane the money (loan window at the mo) to buy these 3 quality players, or tell us that he is not prepared to give Keane any more money, & move him on & let somone else have a go.

Keane said to judge him after 10 games, well Roy we're getting close, in my opinion you have October to turn things round or your out.

The poor bloke has had no service whatsoever ,not started everygame, and has had a different striking partner for every day of the week!
Harsh to say the least.
That has to go down as RK,s cockup as hes a very similar player to counago , so he must have seen a pairing with some of his current players when he brought him!
But who ?
i dont know.

Suffolk_n_Good added 09:32 - Sep 27
Sproughton blue, fair point, (probably just releasing my annoyance at our current situation!) I agree Priskin has had little service, hence my comment about a lack of a link between midfield & attack, but to me he just doesn't look like scoring!! I would question your point about him not playing every week, surely if he was good enough Keane WOULD be playing him every week!

At home and we play 4-5-1. Priskin, who I believe will turn out to be good player for us, was crying out for assistance. Enter Pablo, but takes Priskin off!

Walters who has consistentky been our best player, on the right, turns up on the left. Why? At least it meant that the ineefective Martin was left out.

Whether you like him or not, the concensus of opinion was that Quinn was playing well alongside Leadbitter. So drop him and bring in Trotter.

Delaney puts in poor performance after poor performance yet Wright is playing in the reserves. Why?

Does Keane have any idea what he is doing?

I'm getting a little worried now. Have the boys had time to gel? Well, I would be less worried if we were showing some promising signs but, alas, we are showing precious little. Every game it looks like it's the first time they have played together. Everybody expected Norwich to pull clear last season but it didn't happen. Undoubtedly Keane will not be pushed for a long time yet but I don't necessarily think it's too early to push the panic button when you can't see a light at the end of the tunnel.
Basically, the team Keane inherited was almost there. We just needed a couple of additions really but in he came and dismantled the team, sold some of our best young players and brought in a load of old dross (with only one or two exceptions). Seems like he is making a lot of enemies too. "You will never play for me again! Oops, actually I might need you after all." Who is actually going to want to play for this man?? I don't know what the answer is at this stage but I am becoming very down about the whole situation. Jim Magilton must be peeing himself.

The worst Ipswich display I can remember and I saw the John Duncan era!

We were very static, weak in defence, poor in midfield and with no bite upfront. I live in Norway and had to settle for a local bar and BBC2s coverage. It was embarrassing to see such a poor display. The bar was full with Toon nutters (is it the water in Newcastle?) and then to have Shearer and Dixon basically ripping the team a new orifice during the half time analysis was a real downer but what they said was correct.

My biggest questions are:

(1) Why does our defence make the same stupid schoolboy mistakes time and time again?
(2) Why don't we shoot when we get in front of goal? Are we trying to dribble the ball in? Can't our players hit a ball further than 6 yards?
(3) Why can't we pass the ball and keep it?
(4) Why can't our players create or be assertive?
(5) Has R Wright forgotten what goal keeping is about?
(6) Why didn't Town push up at every opportunity? We sat so deep in defence we practically gave Newcastle an open expanse to pass, create and make us look like muppets.

I like RKs attitude but enough is enough. The situation needs to be addressed and quickly.

For half an hour I thought we were decent, but then one bad goal, the confidence drains and we fell apart. This is still a new team, full of youngsters, and some of them just couldn't cope. As the bloke next to me said, 'scared witless'. At least after Tuesday we should finally pick up some points and get on a roll. However if we don't pick up good points from Barnsley, Swansea, Watford, Plymouth or Derby over October then I'll start getting really worried.

I've heard some Charlton comparisons-now that is a scary thought. In my opinion sacking the manager at this stage would be the most likely way to make this happen-what we need is stability not more chaos. Ipswich managers get years, not months, remember? As for bringing back Burley, he nearly put us out of business completely last time. No need to panic-yet.

On the plus side, really enjoyed the atmosphere before the game (until the Eurotrance came on) and singing 'we didn't sack BR' at the Toon army. We desperately need a centre half though-still. I know some have doubts about Sol Campbell (me included) but if there is a chance we could get him then we should throw the kitchen sink at it.

Since the end of last season 'we' all knew that we needed to do something up front and improve the back line... What has Mr. K. done nothing!!! He had all that time to get in quality before the start and all we have is more players for all of the other positions on the park.
All town have done is change one Irish Manager for another and it looks like this one has less of an idea than the than the last. Just shows that 'a fan' should be careful for what he wish for... sometimes its not for the better....

Keano, play 442 and stick with the same players and stop, playing around with the team - sh*t not even sure it is an Ipswich team any more!

Dear oh dear oh dear...where to start?

I think this is payback time for the shoddy way this club has treated it's last 4 managers (Lyall,Burley,Royle & Magilton).

I think Marcus Evans has got one hell of a big decision to make over the coming days/weeks because if I was him I would seriously be thinking about cutting my losses and bringing in someone with pedigree & experience at this level..ie.Burley,Curbishley or Coppell...and before it's too late.

I am amazed at how completely clueless Keane has turned out to be..the guy has been here now for 6 months and STILL doesn't know his best 11.

I'm perfectly happy with Wrighty in goal - he's been our best player this season - yesterday was an off day.

The defence needs David Wright, a new centre half who can organise a defence (DeVos still hasn't been replaced) and a new left back because imo Delaney shouldn't be allowed onto our pitch again.

Leadbitter must be wondering why he's left his boyhood heroes to join us but we are sadly missing Norris alongside him..Bigtime.

Colback looks lost and it p*sses me off that we're helping out sunderland's youth players when they're not up to that much - i'd rather see our own given a decent run in the team (jordan rhodes).

I'm not surprised we're struggling up front because Keane changes the strike force every single game - how can they ever gel?!...Counago & Stead should be given a run together.

I fear another hiding on tuesday and another loss vs Barnsley.

At least Jim wouldnt've just sat there yesterday doing nothing & looking annoyed- he would've been on the touchline barking out orders/encouraging his players on.

It was embarrassing.

I have seen the glory days under Sir Bob and the misery days under Mick McGiven.....sadly we seem to be closer to the latter than the former on a day when we were remembering our past.
A woeful performance in front of a crowd full of passion whether wearin blue and white or black and white.
Mr Keane wants to be a top manager...my god he has a long way to go!!!

I have been behind Roy from the start, but now my confidence in him is draining. Three more matches is what I'm giving him before I really start to make judgement. But we have to accept that when a team is doing badly it is down to the manager, that's football so if we continue this bad run over the next three games I think the board should start to consider Keanes posistion.
What I don't understand is how he can take a team that we had from last year (which wasn't that bad, IMO it under achieved and I'm sure someone like Joe Royle would have at least reached the play-off with those players) dismantle it and bring in players who are simply not up to championship standards.
I can hear myself quietly calling out big Joes name which will only get louder as this poor form continues, he did a great job with no money and I'm sure he has one more big job left in him.

I was gutted I couldn't make up the 400 mile round trip for the match. Had to watch it on TV after work, and it was hard watching after 30 mins. Until then I was hopeful for 3 points.

Take a few positives . . . I've not worked those out yet. I can see Grant Leadbitter becoming very popular with the 'faithful' and Priskin looked sharp - only if we could get a final ball to him?

Onwards and Upwards from here on in. COYB.

.. Opps forgot to add, I agree that Trotter was having a good game and looked to be protecting the Defence well until it went AWOL after 30mins. Well done Liam, I've knocked you for performances like the one you gave against PNE - much, much improvement. Need to see same step up from the rest of the squad.

Magilton finished 9th last season and i thought doing a good job. People said we had to move on, fair enough but with money Roy Keane has taken us backwards. This is the worst ever start to a season. I am beginning to think that maybe we made a mistake in sacking Jim Malgilton. If as people say Roy inherited Jim's bad squad are we not at least 9th.

First things first, what a wonderful tribute to Sir Bobby AND his family yesterday. It made me feel proud to have been a supporter of ITFC for well over 40 years. The club really seem to have hit the right note on the corporate front, I really appreciated the off-field performance.
On the pitch though the only class was the young lass singing 'Abide with me' & 'My Way'!

Having travelled up from Devon the Sir Bobby tribute made the journey worthwhile, but our performance on the pitch was woeful, just woeful, boy's against men I'm affraid.

So what do we do to improve the teams confidence, well as supporters booing the team doesn't help anyone, not anyone, so perhaps we can help by supporting the team. leaving at half time as so many did, doesn't help the team either. Most of out squad are young & inexperienced & need encouragement.

Roy Keane has ripped apart the existing squad, sold and bought unwisely & is now reaping the rewards. If our defending is unacceptable...why hasn't he sorted it out. The buck stops at the managers door, we are in real danger of becoming a relegation candidate, you said Roy yourself you admired Sol Campbell for walking away when things don't work out, well YOU'RE not working out Roy, your record is abysmal, please accept how things are and GO NOW.

I think Curbs has always been the man for me, go get him Marcus before it's too late!!!!

What a woeful performance, after the wonderful tribute to Sir Bobby.

not sure if getting rid of Keano would improve things that much - the defence is dreadful, there is no link between midfield and attack, really can't blame Priskin if he's not getting the service. perhap's a 4-4-2 might improve things. Getting in more players on loan is a short term solution and will mean further disruption to the lineup! I know times have changed but worth noting Sir Bobby only brought in 14 player during his time at Portman Road.

If we are still where we are by the end of October I think Keane will have to go - of the names I have seen posted so far I would go for Curbishly, not BFJ!

All this new manager talk is rubbish!

We need the team to understand that poor communication, sitting deep and poor passing with no attacking options means you end up under pressure, stuck in your own half fighting against the tide. You will ship goals and cannot understand why Ipswich are doing this.

We haven't the pace in the team or a Giggs or Rooney to sprint 2/3 of the pitch and put in a quality final pass only for the striker to unleash a screamer from 20 yards!

Keane needs to change his system. If he thinks we're Man Utd he must realise we don't have the quality to play like that. On yesterdays performance we cannot pass, shoot, run, create or defend. We are reactive rather than proactive and once the first goal went in...game over. Heads dropped, it could have been 6 or 7.

Why is it when we're on TV we always seem to be appalling.
