Clegg: Keane Under No Additional Pressure
Clegg: Keane Under No Additional Pressure
Wednesday, 30th Sep 2009 15:30

Chief executive Simon Clegg says manager Roy Keane is under no additional pressure due to the Blues’ poor start to the season. The Blues currently sit bottom of the Championship and are yet to win a league game.

Clegg said: “There’s been absolutely no change in the situation. Roy and I continue to work very closely together. The three-way relationship between Marcus, Roy and myself is as strong today as it was in the close season. There’s been no change to that.

“But I’m not in any way trying to shy away from the fact that it’s been a hugely disappointing start. The fans deserve better, want better and I can assure you that it’s not through lack of effort on Roy’s part or the team’s part that we’re not delivering

“The manager is under no additional pressure, he’s a man who puts pressure on himself, he knows what he has to achieve.

“I continue to be confident that he will achieve that and that there will be a turning of tide over the next couple of games, and particularly if last night is anything to go by when I saw some really encouraging football.”

It's heartening to read "devontractorboy." He also, unusually for a contributor, reads other fans' comments (most simply opine and complain) and is willing to converse with other ITFC postings.
It should be remembered that the great RR was much more unpopular that RK seems to be now, in his early years. For those stalwarts old enough to remember, he was the subject of much criticism and abuse for several seasons, in spite of his early achievements!
Best for all of us to reserve our judgement concerning our present predicament for at least until next year.

There's only so much a manager can do, I think Clegg and Evans have realised this. At the end of the day it is the players who play the football not Keano.

Get real people, if that isn't a vote of confidence then I don't know what is. When a Chairman/Cheif exec comes out saying stuff like that it basically means do your job right our you're out.
Ipswich Town isn't traditionally a scaking club, but how long can this go on for?
And before anbody says it, no I don't want Keane out, I want him to stay and get it right, but in my opinion if nothing has changed by the end of October then I'd say we have to move on and accept that the Keane appointment has not been good for the club.
Please don't let it get to this Roy and get the job done as we're all still fairley sure you're capable of doing.

Let's keep the faith lads. The signs are there that the first win is just around the corner. Roy will know when it's time to walk, he will not wait to be sacked. I have faith that he will turn it around so watch out Barnsley, we're coming to get the three points. C.O.Y.B.

Good to see so many positive replies to this, it's time for the REAL town fans to stand up and be counted. the boo boys need to be outsung whatever the result in future. so many fans complain that they do not feel part of thier club, well now town fans have the perfect opportunity to play a large part in the future success of thier team. And success it will be.

On Sky News Cleggy said "I'm sure things will improve over the next few weeks." Seeing as we only have one game over the next few weeks, ie, Barnsley does this indicate that a lot is hinging on the Barnsley game? Not only is it a must-win 6 pointer, I also believe that the outcome of this game will have a direct and profound bearing on Keane's future at PR.

Either that or like my mate just said, these pen-pushers ain't got a clue about the fixture list or what makes for a good manager or not.

Yes, Keane leaving PR may cause some additional disruption but I would prefer that to him staying and ITFC becoming further adrift at the bottom of the league as each round of fixtures passes.

Somebody said things can't get worse. Well, they can - as pointed out above.

MR Keane - please leave.

Maybe it's you Mr Clegg?

I've an idea that some players have found the hospitality 'Interesting' when invited to attend PR! . . . just one of those rumors you pick up around and about. Cold reception and the Welcome less than you'd expect from a club like ours.

It seems the any Loans are taking SO long to sort out too.. C'mon Mr Clegg, RK has asked you for the players, go get them for him... please?

Wander what the odds were that we wouldnt win a game all season, has that ever happened before!

Thsiis the worst time to ever be a town fan and i hate it. We have always been renowned for playing attractive football, this was thecase with all recent manager burley royle and magilton - KEANE NO.

Im waiting for all the 'KEANE LOVERS' to start telling em how i aint a fan now - personal opininion - we all got one and mine is that for every second he stays the worse it gets.

I knewe Sheff would score last night.

Would any of you work for a D**K like KEANE?????????

It would have been nice to hear about the progress on the loan signings as Roy is none the wiser. Unless we bring these players in soon, we will continue to lose and he will still be under pressure

Well I just had a thought. When I moved to Ipswich and married an ITFC supporter there was talk that it was bad luck that when the old North Stand was pulled down the grave of a Knight was disturbed.
I reckon now that we have re-established a knight there (Sir Bobby) our luck will change demonstrably. Last night we were so close. Sorry Barnsley, you will be our first win of the season.
C'mon the Blues. C'mon Keano - I have total confidence. :)

It's madness to even suggest Keano should be sacked after 10 games. There have been some encouraging signs, we have been unlucky, on the wrong end of some stunning goals. Equally, there have been two or three poor showings, Boro, Newcastle and Palace - One win will change everything.

I'm loving the way some of these posts keep calling for us to back the manager despite us being in the totally unacceptable position he's taken us in....It's a real shame "everyone" didn't take that attitude and get behind Jim Magilton when we were pushing in the right half of the table last season.

Barnsley is a must win game (like I needed to type that!)... It's a real 6 pointer. I think we will turn it round. Last night was encouraging... mainly because we had more stable selections - McAuley, Stead, Quinn... nice to see Peters in the side, albeit in a role I don't think he's ready for. We seem to have a problem with full backs, insomuch as they can't actually defend... We aren't doing ANYTHING, so why not try Thatcher. He's clueless going forward, but we've proved we can score goals (away at least). Let's give Ben a chance to earn his money - we can do no worse. I'm no fan of David Wright - he's very ordinary - but can he be any worse? Wright is poor at going forward as well, but as I say, we need to defend.

we all want Town to do well ! but its not happened so far, i think its ominous when the people up top give a vote of confidence, if the team we had last year was so bad,why are we in a worse state than we have ever been now, surely we should at least have maintained our position and moved on from there, not go backwards.Sorry, i dont see Keane keeping his job .

Is no one gonna fix the issue of wright trying to punch everything ??? it never does any good and never releaves the pressure usally only to serve asto help the opposition put in another cross from the otherside, putting more pressure on our inexperianced defenders, whose confidence is surely now shot it will be difficult to see either pim or tommy smith discover any sort of form. why dont we start playing a sweeper system and wing backs - we have the players and available to do it. and thus take some pressure off the defence, going back in the day this is what burley used to do in front of wright.

Keane is the of boss our prima donnas and jm mates needed to make them realise the club is bigger than them - the shock of this will take time to sink in, I believe we are now starting to see the result of this.

The signs are there of improvement - scoring goals away from home for fun in the last couple of games, as soon as Keano gets in a centre half to play with Bruce, we will be fine. There are a lot worse teams in this league than us!

It is heartening that so many posters are staying positive though can we please stay out of the usual trap of treating those who don't have the same optimism as second class supporters.

Strip away the emotion of having such a big win ripped away by yet another moment of defensive madness and there is much to take from last night. I have major criticisms of keane, believing that our plight is almost excusively of his own making , but there is no sign that he has "lost" the dressing room. Conversely, there is instead a lot of fight and spirit, as indeed I saw at Doncaster. That alone says that change now would not serve any interests other than an understandable but misplaced desire to punish the guy for making such a horlicks of it all. I also quite admired his pretty calm and objective analysis after the game last night - having pretended that Richard Wrights head was a chair that got kicked across the kitchen, someone's microphone would have ended up their ar*e if it was me!

But the fact remains that we are in a terrible position. We saw some promise at Doncaster only to follow it up with Newcastle and if you start doing the maths around games left , points needed etc we cannot go on like this for much longer. Relations within P Rd will be strained, make no mistake. I wouldn't say that RK's job hangs by a thread but ME's assessment will be based purely on a hard headed analysis of when the risk of the status quo exceeds the risk of change and I think we're a lot closer to that point than some others on here for sure. Time is now in terribly short supply.

But there are bigger issues at stake here than just RK's job - the club should and always will be bigger than any passing through manager. particularly in today's "kiss the badge" cycnical world - the real issue is whether we can stay in this division, having hit the lowest point in my entire life (as an slightly ironic aside, my first game was the Man U / George Best 3-1 defeat that is often referred to as RR's nadir and our lowest point before now). In a strange way, staring meltdown like this in the face is showing signs of creating a sort of dunkirk sense of unity on the terraces that wouldn't be there if we were just mithering around in no mans land like last year.

No idea where I'm going with this. Just a bit of therapy really. COYB!!

Great post WashbrookBlue, at last some intelligent comment from the more, shall we say, anti-Keane perspective. Far more effective than calling someone a pr*ck if you ask me.

Although I personally remain positive about RK I agree fully that time is running out, from the perspective of the fans, the club, the media; you only have to pick up a newspaper to see the depth of anti-Keane feeling out there, and if October goes as badly as September then we're in trouble. However the Dunkirk spirit you mention gives me hope-one of the most depressing things about last season was seeing ITFC fans at each others throats, to an extent I've never witnessed before. Whatever the outcome of the next few games, we're all in this together, and I hope that we as fans wake up and realise this sooner rather than later.

COYB.
