Reserves Defeat West Ham
Reserves Defeat West Ham
Tuesday, 6th Oct 2009 17:45

A strong Town reserve side beat West Ham 3-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Portman Road this afternoon. Connor Wickham, Pablo Couñago and Lee Martin netted the goals.

Also in the side were Colin Healy, David Wright, Jack Colback and Damien Delaney.

Wickham scored the first, an individual goal, Couñago added a trademark backheel and Martin an overhead kick.

Manager Roy Keane and Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola both watched the game, arranged as the Town second string don't have a league game this week.

Shame our ressies can't play the likes of West Ham more often. The FA need to sort out reserve team football. We should not have to play the likes of Stevenage Borough. As it stands, if your a kid at a Championship club, you have a huge jump from rubbish reserve football to the first team. Leaving academies to go on loan is a poor substiture when clubs like Ipswich have such famously productive learning environments. This is bad for the future of Championsip clubs and will eventually be bad for the national team. This issue needs much greater publicity.

Agreed with brendanh, the state of reserve team footy in the mickey mouse combination leagues is really hampering the development of the younger players. I thought the plan a year or so ago was to set up a championship reserve league?!

Maybe we should put the "reserves" out against Swansea.

Why does Keane play Pablo in a friendly and not on a Sat pm?

brendanh - been saying the same for ages, its a shambles, how does that prepare the youngsters or those not in n the 1st team to prepare to play against championship sides in the event of injuries, suspensions etc..

brendanh - spot on. The standard between Championship and reserve team football is too much of a leap. Which is why some players - who excel in the ressies - look like rabbits in the headlights when they play in the first team. However, games such as these are a good workout, good for match fitness levels and keep people sharp - and it's great to win a game! All this "the players play too many games" business is utter cr*p. You keep match fit by playing games - simple as.

That should help his home sickness... A decent prospect, a good passer, if not the quickest - but no worse or better than some of the guys who are playing regularly? To be honest, he hasn't come on as much as we'd hoped, has had a variety of interesting ailments / injuries and must have rubbed RK up the wrong way to be so left on the shelf...

i'm sorry, people thinking that a good reserve team performance, means a good first team place are sorely mistaken.
The difference is soo substantial, it requires 2 "o"s in so.
All will come good as long as the supporters "SUPPORT" rather then continue the moaning BS...
Get behind the team whatever, or get out...
