Town Draw Southampton Away
Town Draw Southampton Away
Sunday, 3rd Jan 2010 18:13

Town have drawn League One Southampton away in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The sides last met in the FA Cup at the third round stage in 1999/00 at Portman Road when the then-Premiership Saints won 1-0, Dean Richards scoring the game's only goal.

Southampton also won both the other two FA Cup meetings between the teams, a 7-1 thrashing at the Dell in 1960/61 and a 3-2 victory in 1990/91, also in Hampshire and at the third round stage.

Last season, in Southampton's relegation season, the sides drew 2-2 at St Mary's and the Saints won 3-0 at Portman Road.

The game will see Saints Kelvin Davis and Dan Harding face their old club, while keeper Bartosz Bialkowski was on loan at Portman Road last season without playing a game.

Current Blue Richard Wright spent time on loan at St Mary's while a West Ham player but won't face his old club has he's out with a knee injury until March. Loan striker Stern John was with the Saints between his spells with Roy Keane's Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

In 2005 Keane fell out with Southampton fans while warming up when a Manchester United sub after responding to taunts by mocking their relegation.

Fourth round matches will be played on the weekend of Saturday 23rd January.

Can't see why people are moaning about this draw. Yes it might be a bit dull but lets wait until the QF before we draw a Prem team and then shock them.

Look at it this way, if the draws goes our way you never no what might happen, obviously we want a premiership day out but wouldnt you rather have a day out at wembley or a quarter final clash later on in the competition, look what happened to cardiff last season. Wycombe seasons ago.

Not an easy game as some have said. Might even take a replay.

I would class this as a winnable bananaskin! Saints are on the up, as are we. And they will be seen as the lower division underdogs (despite being at home), which automatically puts the pressure on us. I would take a draw and a replay if we can't win outright on the day.

COYB!!!!!

this is a good draw for Ipswich
you can imahine the Bobby Stokes, Roger Osborne footage being rolled out nearer the time
on current form w have a good chance of going through, and i can't rmember the last time we made the fifth round
imagine a plum home draw in round five, and suddenly we are in the last eight
you gotta have a dream
great to see you Horry at the end of the game against QPR!

i Watched the draw and was gutted when we got Southhampton, like most i was hoping for a Prem team... but the more i think about this tie the more i like the sound of it, we have a good chance of progressing to round 5. I would be more confident it were at home but away it could be very tough. I think a draw and a replay wouldnt be a bad result. I hope we take this game seriously and get to the next round. This will be very interesting

Anyone who thinks this will be a walkover is an idiot. Southampton are 5 in the league having won 4 of their last 6 matches; and only lost 1 of their last 6 home matches. Rickie Lambert scored 29 last season as is currently on 23 this season.

We are going to have to be at our very best to win this one.

Lambert may be a one to bid for this January. If we did get him he would of course be cuptied but it would stop him scoring against us!

Bergoltblue, Southampton are 12th in league one (but prob 5th if not for the points deduction) so you're sort of right and wrong if you get my drift.
