Stockport Keeper Linked Again
Stockport Keeper Linked Again
Tuesday, 5th Jan 2010 17:27

Town have again been linked with Stockport County keeper Owain Fôn Williams, who is also said to be interesting Leeds, Sunderland, Burnley and Sheffield United. Leeds are said to be winning the race for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Former Wales U17, U19 and U21 international Williams was previously linked with the Blues back in January of last year.

Stockport are in administration and Williams, who has been called up to the Wales full squad but is yet to win a senior cap, is likely to leave the club during January along with a number of his team-mates.

Williams joined County from Crewe in the summer of 2008 having failed to make a senior appearance for the Railwaymen.

Boss Roy Keane has said on a number of occasions that he likes to have three senior keepers in his squad. Brian Murphy has signed on a Bosman from Bohemians in Ireland and Arran Lee-Barrett is set to sign a new contract later this month, but with Richard Wright out with a knee injury until the end of March, Keane currently has only two keepers to choose from.

However, it is more likely that the Blues would look for a loan stopper to cover for Wright until the former England keeper, whose Town deal is up in the summer, is fit again, rather than make another permanent signing.

Meanwhile, Derby striker Rob Hulse wants to stay with the Rams rather than join the Blues or Middlesbrough during the transfer window, according to a tabloid report. Town have recently been linked with Hulse on a number of occasions, while Boro tried to sign him during the summer transfer window.

The ex-Crewe man is said to prefer to stay with Derby for the moment before making a decision on his future in the close season when he will have only a year left on his contract.

No issue with Hulse not wanting to join us.

Doubt we would be after this Keeper also.

I do like transfer window time, yet lots of tabloid reports which are likely to be incorrect!

There seems to be lots of talk and rumour, with little confirmed activity. I'm led to believe that Jack Wilshere was one of Roy's loan targets... This from the BBC Sport website:

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has turned his back on a loan move to the Championship in favour of joining another Premier League club on a short-term deal to prove to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger he can hack it at the top level.
Full story: Daily Mirror

Another blank drawn...

Wilshere was never on the books - Burnley have been after him for a couple of months now and Wenger was keen on giving him the experience, although now Coyle is off to Bolton, so might Jack!

Most tabloid talk is agents trying to get their clients a bit more cash or journalists trying to generate a story - I doubt Hulse was ever an option, but who the hell are we going to get?

Stead doing well, but he needs some back up.

I would like us to take a gamble on Michael Mifsud as he would be on a free and a half decent goal scorer!

I am VERY happy that Hulse will not be joining us. I think all of our current strikers are better than him not to mention the stupid J2.5M. If we should get a striker (and we MUST get one) he should be a prolific one to do the job we need - scoring regularly!
I hope we will find the right one during this January window!

I have to agree with others, cant say I'm that upset that Hulse won't be joining us, but that said we do need someone!! Also don't think Keane is that bothered about signing another keeper at the mo, what with Barrett doing well, Murphy now signed, I can only see a loan keeper if 1 of them gets injured.

im confused as to why we'd look at someone like this over some of the other guys who seem to be playing at clubs far less appealing that ITFC. Tomas Cerny has been getting awesome reviews, playing at an average (at best) SPL club, would imagine we'd be able to get someone like him with genuine ability and also good form.....for relatively sensible money ...... think this guy is quite similar to Begovic, who i reckon would come if 'Arry doesnt take him to spurs, which he may well do!

Hulse & Gio would be great additions. Hulse is a great target man, as with Gio he's a quick and upcoming youngster who always perfoms. But i dont believe gettign rid of Counago is the right idea, we dont many strikers as it is..with Wickham still too young, Priskin not being good & John on loan. The only good striker is Stead. We should snap up Murphy on a loan deal..and then with a view of a permanant deal!!
