Smith Joins Brentford On Loan
Smith Joins Brentford On Loan
Thursday, 7th Jan 2010 11:09

Central defender Tommy Smith has joined League One Brentford on a month’s loan, as predicted by TWTD on Tuesday. Smith is in need of first team football as he looks to secure his place in New Zealand’s World Cup squad.

Brentford manager Andy Scott said: "Tommy's another player who we have been keeping an eye on for some while and is a player with a lot of potential.

"We hope his time with us will help him fulfil the promise he has shown previously and in turn help him with his ambitions to represent New Zealand in the World Cup Finals this summer."

Fellow defender Pim Balkestein returned from a loan spell at Griffin Park last week, while former Blues Jordan Rhodes, Billy Clarke and Dean Bowditch were all with the Bees last season.

Smith says he was given good reports of life as a Bee by his former team-mates: "I spoke to a few of the lads that have been at Brentford before and they all said what a good club it is.

"It is a chance for me to go out and play regular first team football. That's what I need at the moment and I'm really looking forward to it."

Smith previously spent time out on loan at Blue Square Premier club Stevenage during the 2007/08 season.

maybe we could have not recalled pim and let him and smith play together at brentford - possibly building a strong defensive relationship for the future ?

I agree with what Tractorboi4eva says

Having both Tommy & Pim playing together regularly can only be good for us in the longterm

Send Pim back too!

So Tommy is off to Brentford so he is fit after his injury. Tommy goes and Pim is recalled to act as cover. This can only mean that RK places Pim above Tommy in the pecking order for a first team place.

Personally I would have it the other way round. Perhaps Pim is preferred as he is match fit whilst Tommy needs games under his belt.

I presume this is only a short term loan deal meaning possibly he could be replaced there by Pim after a few matches as neither of them are going to get many games here at the mo, however we do need cover thats one I guess ones here and one goes there.
With this " great relationship thing going on between us and Brenford" when are they going to unearth a gem that we can nick off them, tis only fair gents!

---STOP PRESS--- Brentford Football Club have changed their club name to "Ipswich Town Reserves" When questioned why a spokesman said: "We have always admired Ipswich Town from afar as an ambitious club with a fantastic fan base, exciting players, & huge potential. By changing our club name & borrowing as many players from Ipswich Town as we can physically fit into our changing room we believe we can achieve something similar!"
The spokesman added: "Could I ask all supporters of the former Brentford Football Club to burn their red & black scarfs & purchase one in blue in white before the next home match, many thanks" ---STOP PRESS---

Another spot-on decision by RK (there still seem to be enough people around willing to knock him, so credit where it's due!)

Pim's had a nice run of 8 games at Brentford to get some sharpness back (and they haven't conceded many goals during that spell), whereas Smith hasn't even had reserve team footie recently with the lack of fixtures. We've got cover for Delaney / McAuley with Pim / Bruce, so it won't do Smith any harm to get a few competitive games under his belt.

Nice to see a good relationship building up with us and Brentford, they seem a decent club and give good playing time for young un's, good for both parties.

I would question Pim going back to be honest. Keane wants to get Troy Brown out on loan and has said he has had enquiries. Why would we leave ourselves with only Bruce as cover?

Bergholtbue.. Smith has gone out to play games, Pim has been recalled as cover with Bruce as well. Smith needs football for the World Cup whereas Pim doesn't

Believe me guys as a Brentford fan for many many years now I can't thank Town enough for the quality players they have loaned us. Lets face it, Billy Clarke's & Jordan Rhodes goals won us League Two last season. This year Pim & Tommy are going to help us stay in Leage One. Once again thanks Town! Come on You Blues & Come on You Bees!!!!!!!!

Good shout IpswichBee,do you want Lisbie?
Any news on us signing anyone yet? Hope we dont wait until the 31st we need that forward now,Tommy Smith Portsmouth would work well with Priskin, they need the money?? Murphy played well for Sunderland the other day,did read report the "boo boys" had a real go at thim. Philips or Healy? both would do a job for us. Beckford 2 million, better option than Hulse 2.5 million
