Fan's Shirt Challenge for Haiti
Fan's Shirt Challenge for Haiti
Monday, 18th Jan 2010 11:56

Town fan Marcus Brien is hoping to raise £1981 for the British Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Appeal by parading around the Portman Road pitch wearing a Norwich City shirt when the Blues take on West Brom on Tuesday 26th January. The British Red Cross has already raised more than £1 million in aid for Haiti.

Marcus, a regular on Ipswich Community Radio, told TWTD that his challenge could force him to have to move house: “Most people try and climb Everest or soak themselves in a bath full of beans to raise funds. I have chosen something more dangerous and embarrassing and may have to leave Ipswich as a result.

“You can help either let me go through with this or save me from my moment of madness by donating and voting for either the Norwich shirt or the Ipswich shirt at http://www.justgiving.com/norwichshirt by simply leaving a message after you have donated, to say which shirt you would love to see me wear.

“There are only a few reasons why this shouldn't be done, but 50,000 reasons so far why it should be.”

Marcus chose the figure of £1981 as his target as 1981 was the year in which the Blues won the UEFA Cup.

Grief ! poor sole - there must be a better way of raising money than having to degrade yourself in such a way.

It does seem a strange thing to do, but surely that is what charity is all abou

Can't you walk to the centre cirlce and burn the shirt in the middle of the pitch. That would probably raise more money for the good cause.

He'll certainly get coins donated - but they'll be probably aiming at him?

Though I am in support, I'd feel extremely offended that one of our own dare wear a scum shirt??? Can not just collect outside the ground like the RNLI and the TA's???

Pathetic that anyone could object, at least the lads raising money for a good cause, does it really matter what he does? Get yer hands in yer pockets and help him raise as much as he can, the people of Haiti need it more than all of us.

I'll be donating on line as can't be there, if we support him it shows we're better than Narrrrich. Can't imagine Delia doing it in a Town shirt can you!!!!

What I was trying to say was... shades of the billboard scene in Die Hard: with a vengeance.

really good idea. It would be a great fund-raiser if we all paired up with a fan of our most detested rival and agreed to swap shirts for one day - could be a matchday, could be a day at work... I know someone who I would LOVE to see wearing a Town shirt all day...

I will donate £50 if he dresses as delia and does the 'lets be avin you' speech in front of the Sir Bobby Stand with a microphone in one hand and a glass of sherry in the other.

Very good cause that can't be argued but I just don't think you are going about this the right way. Doesn't seem a very good idea to me. Not something I want to see at PR. Sorry.

Dear Friends, Marcus here, the guy doing The Red Cross Personal Challenge. Thank you so much to TWTD and everyone one here, since you published the article, the fund has nearly doubled...so many thanks for donating and voting. Everyone can still donate and VOTE for either the Norwich or Ipswich shirt on www.justgiving.com/norwichshirt

I got in touch with Norwich City to see if someone from Norwich would do the same ie put themselves up for a vote as to which shirt they should wear. I haven't had a reply as yet. I am contacting every league club to see if this can be rolled out nationally, where rival teams could arrange joint events etc. I would be very proud to say we were the first town do such a thing. It may definitely need tweaking etc but we've raised over £400 so far.

My intentions are sincere and if the public decide that I have to wear the Norwich shirt then I'm ready for a lot of stick and a few laughs....and a new identity!

I do want to try and do this properly and fully respect the views of those who think this not a great idea and could be done better. Please please email at marcusbrien@aol.com with any concerns or ideas, and also thoughts on how this could be quickly rolled out nationally.

Anyway a million thanks to everyone for all your support. Must dash off down the Charity shop as some bloke has offered me £50 if I dress as Delia and do the "Let's be 'aving ya" speech.

I agree about the "Less be avenue" speech - would give something. It wasn't advertised as a who raises more determines the shirt ... makes more sense now!

Perhaps one of those Protektorvests I've heard about is in order, should you end up wearing 'that shirt'...

Perhaps, if a Narch fan takes up the challenge of wearing a Town shirt on a parade of Carrot Road, you can both meet up afterwards and do a joint parade around Diss Town.

Thanks again to everyone for supporting me on this as it really was the most embarrassing thing I could think of someone in Ipswich doing....hopefully this will take off elsewhere around the country. Have a message from Haiti Football Federation to read out at half time who are just glad football fans are thinking of them. Thanks a million
