Celta Causing Problems
Celta Causing Problems

Pablo Couñago's old club Celta Vigo are trying to scupper Town registering their new player in time for the new Premiership season. The Spanish side have failed to release the player's documentation and Town could take the matter to UEFA.

The FA have given Pablo permission to play in the pre-season games despite his lack of documentation, George Burley said of the situation: "The FA have said that Pablo can play in these games but as things stand at the moment he couldn’t play in the Premiership as Celta are still holding his registration. It’s a major concern to us that Celta are being like this. The FA have become very much involved and are negotiating for us. It is likely that UEFA will become embroiled in the situation soon. Pablo was a free agent under the Bosman ruling and he took a decision to sign for us. Celta were keen to keep him as he’s a great prospect and scored two goals for Spain Under-21s last season. You can understand Celta being frustrated but this situation is ridiculous. We have done everything in the right and proper manner and now we need his registration to be released by the Spanish club in order for him to be involved as an official Ipswich player with the FA. Hopefully Pablo’s documents will be sent over soon. But at the moment Celta are certainly giving us a few headaches."

Shortly after the deal was concluded Celta Vigo said they were going to take legal action against Town, a threat that has subsequently proved an idle one. Town seem to have acted perfectly correctly in this matter, unlike the Spanish club.

Pablo makes his first appearance in a Town shirt tonight in the pre-season friendly with Tampere United. The Spaniard is being helped to settle into the squad by Fabian Wilnis and Martijn Reuser who both speak a little Spanish.

There is no further news of the 'outstanding international' mentioned by George Burley this week. A bid is in and the club are waiting for the other club's response.

George Burley has revealed that Middlesbrough tried to make a last minute move for Tommy Miller. On Monday afternoon, as Miller was signing for Town, Boro approached him through a third party.

George Burley said: "Fortunately Tommy had his heart set on Ipswich Town and there was no way he was going to change his mind even for a Premiership club up in the north east."

If Miller makes it to Finland in time he is expected to take some part in today's game with Tampere.
