Sunderland Striker Again Close to Town Move
Sunderland Striker Again Close to Town Move
Sunday, 31st Jan 2010 22:58

Town are once again close to signing Sunderland striker or left midfielder Daryl Murphy. The 26-year-old, who played under Roy Keane at the Stadium of Light, almost joined the Blues in the summer, even passing a medical before the move broke down.

Personal terms and interest from Premier League Hull City led to the switch collapsing after a fee of £1.5 million rising to £2.5 million had been agreed with Sunderland for the former Waterford United man, who had several spells on trial with the Blues in the 2004/05 season before signing for the Black Cats.

However, the potential move has resurfaced on a number of occasions during the following months and it’s little surprise that Murphy is again being targeted by the Blues.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or wide player will sign on loan for the rest of the season before the transfer window closes at 5pm on Monday with a view to the switch being made permanent in the summer.

Murphy, who is contracted to Sunderland until 2012, has made four starts and three sub appearances for the Black Cats this season without scoring, appearing most recently in the 7-2 defeat to Chelsea earlier this month.

Coincidentally, the Irish international played youth football with recent Town signing the unrelated Brian Murphy when they were growing up in their home town of Waterford.

Steve Sweden ..what exactly has Priskin had to endure ? Has he been resoundly booed everytime he touches the ball or comes on a sub ? His name been booed when announced in starting line up ?
If your talking about not starting enough or being in and out of the side ,surely all the strikers could complain about that and that is down to their manager

An absolute joke of a player. Keane IS desperate. Why have we borrowed this waste of space with a view to a perm . Im losing faith in keane rapidly with this signing . Cant get in the sunderland team and wolves and hull didnt want him

Sky reporting that Murphy would be a replacement for Priskin . FFS I hope not . Priskin is more of a goalscorer and better prospect than Murphy , given a chance he will come good . Really hope there is nothing in this story.

Priskin + ANO would be good .

Might be OK as a loan. Permanent signing i dont think so! Should be targeting someone like Long of Reading or taking advantage of cash strapped clubs ( they did it to us in administration ).

why dont we jus forget about this guy, he hasn't wanted to sign for us previously so why continue to go in for him.

looks like priskin could be off and whilst I am not a fan of his, I would say he jus needs a goal to give him a bit of a lift. to be fair though he has been really poor since he's come to the club, but then again if QPR see promise in him could there be a decent player waiting to come out?

With regards to the chopra speculation, is it a case of keane being negative in claiming the club cant afford him or is it a case of marcus evans not willing to get the cheque book out and back keane? its not as if marcus evans couldn't afford to pay 3 - 3.5 million for a top quality striker like chopra. he's the 20 goal a season striker we need, would be great if we could pull it off. PLEASE MARCUS EVANS PUT YOUR HAND IN YOUR POCKET AND BACK YOUR MANAGER !!!!!

I'd rather we go for Chopra as he's something different from what we have and a proven goalscorer. Murphy already turned us down and we need people committed

The Cardiff player is Mark Kennedy, his missus told mine that "he could be on his way to Town."

Not good enough for the Prem, not great at championship level - it's so desperate. Why does it always have to be ex Sunderland, ex Man utd or Irish? We're 3 points off relegation again & look at the money he has had.

Wow Murphy!! woopy doo daa! If he is that good Keano why has he not been snapped up by anyone else??
It would have made sense to keep Priskin and get someone like Chopra in.
All keane goes for is Irish or Sunderland players.
Sorry folks but in loosing my faith in keane.....we are 4th from bottom, He is worse than the clown Magilton. FACT!!
He has quality players go. Haynes and Rhodes and replaced them with the likes of Martin (Complete waste of money) Priskin (No worth half what he paid for him) Healy (Wtf was he thinking)
I though Magilton chopped his team about too often but Keane aint got a clue what his best team is and the season is in the final stages!!!
Do your job keane and stop mugging us fans off!! You are making ITFC a laughing stock!

QPR have got marcus Bent on loan now. A mercenary donkey maybe, but still far better than Priskin.

Kennedy good reliable left sided player ,not going to drastically change our season i fancy but good player none the less and a good addition if he signs

I would prefer Alan or Ray Kennedy - Agree about Bent - bit of va maverick but he will score goals for about 10 games and if he gets chance he will - gotta be better bet than Murphy - we need a goal scorer - go get jackson at Gills at least he may be interested in stepping up rather than coming down a level

Got a real feeling that Alan Curbishly will be our Manager by the start of next season. I heard his agent on Talk Sport last week & he actually mentioned Ipswich in a round about way. Would explain lack of recent spending. Now the draw sequence seems to be turning to losses again, likely ME will act fairly soon.

Why do we want someone who has already messed us about and turned us down once.... Seems like ITFC is on its knee's pleeding with anyone who will come...

Its a very sad state of afairs and is really cringeworthy to think what lengths 'our' club is going to to sort out this mess that RK has put us in...

No natural left sided players at the club, Murphy would be a good signing, can play left side or up front, has the strength and ability to hold the ball up which no one else at the club can, can also cross the ball, might not be prolific but will score. Has a very good attitude as well. Why is anyone suprised that a player, given the opportunity, would choose a Premier club and Premier wages over championship.Left full needed also, still wouldnt surprise me if Naylor signed, as Celtic have just signed a left full.
