Baptiste's Trial Extended
Baptiste's Trial Extended
Sunday, 28th Feb 2010 20:36

Trinidadian international Kerry Baptiste has had his trial with the Blues extended by four days, according to reports in the Caribbean. The 28-year-old arrived at the club last Tuesday for what was initially planned to be a week at Playford Road.

On Friday boss Roy Keane said that he hadn’t seen much of the Trinidad and Tobago striker or right winger in action but was due to take a look at him in training later that day.

An international team-mate of Carlos Edwards and former loanee Stern John with 43 caps and eight goals, Baptiste currently plays for Joe Public FC in his home country.

Previously with San Juan Jabloteh and the North East Stars, Baptiste is the all-time top scorer in the TT Pro League, Trinidad and Tobago's top division, having scored 102 goals, 48 of them coming last season.

Baptiste is ineligible for Tuesday’s reserves game at Wycombe Wanderers (KO 7pm at Maidenhead's York Road), but Keane says he could play in a training match.

MLS sides FC Dallas and Toronto FC are also understood to be interested in Baptiste's signature.

Roy has probably found out that he has Irish grandparents or something like that.

Crock - yourpoint being? So what if players are English, Irish or whatever - as long as they perform for us and with the exception of a few (Priskin and Martin), most of Roy's signings have.

Not sure I agree with the comment about 'most of' RK's signings performing, but this guy could well be worth a look. No fee involved, low wages, impressive record at a lower level - could well be worth a punt on a 1 year deal with an option for another? If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but he could be a hidden gem. Edwards would have told RK not to bother bringing him over if he wasn't up to it?

Mungo - apart from Priskin and Martin who have not performed then - oh, yes add Colin Healy to the list

Jas - Without wanting to get tied up in a lengthy argument about which players have done the business this season, I think we can fairly add Carlos Edwards to the list of players who haven't made much of an impact so far. For the fee paid, we all expected much more from him. Between them, that is £5m spent for little return. Others are unproven. I'm not saying they can't turn it round or that we wont get some of that money back, but its hard to say that the majority of the players individually and the team as a whole have performed consistently well enough this season. That's why we are near the bottom of the league.
