Keane: I Learnt a Lot at Watford
Keane: I Learnt a Lot at Watford
Thursday, 18th Mar 2010 17:25

Boss Roy Keane says he learnt a lot about his players during the 2-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday. The Town manager kept his squad locked in the dressing room for 90 minutes after a performance he described as “unbelievable”.

Keane said: "I certainly learnt so much about the players the other night it was untrue.”

The Blues boss was clearly very unimpressed with his side’s display at Vicarage Road but says a bit of anger isn’t always necessarily a bad thing: “Anger’s good. It’s good to get angry. It’s an emotion, it’s part of the game. If people upset you and you don’t get angry, then I think you’re in the wrong game.

“I think sometimes it’s good to go a bit mad. I don’t throw teacups, I think I’d rather throw punches!

“Obviously, I appreciate those days are gone, you can’t be going around assaulting people, but I can understand managers’ frustrations when they fall out with players.”

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Jon Macken, who will be back at Portman Road with Barnsley on Saturday, has told the club site that Town are moving in the right direction: "I still believe Ipswich are on the way up.

"Their problem has clearly been all these games drawn, which is a lot of points to give away. Yes, they lost in the week to Watford, but their record before that hasn't been too bad at all. I'm expecting a tough game, as it always is when you come to Portman Road.

"I loved my time at Ipswich and have nothing but good things to say about the club. Ipswich have been down at this level for a number of years now without always getting the rewards.

“I hope they do eventually turn things around and push for the Premier League because a club of their stature, with the fans they have, deserve success."

About time he put the boot into these overpaid mofo's. Sulky footballers are the worst people that exist in the sporting world. Bring em to earth with a smash, i say. you're a professional, you put the work in always or pay the price. And strong managers don't suffer fools.

Keano will not allow our squad space for players without utter commitment to play permiership football. For tall the talk of relegation, he's still focussed on his overall target. That's why any players not making the grade now are chaff. and he is doing the right thing laying into them.

Look at D Murphy. He came to the club, wants premiership foootball, knows keano will yell at him but appreciates it. players not putting in 110% wont play, it's simple. It's from the preface to the book of Alex Ferguson. It works. and you end up with single minded footballers who crave winning.

Unbelievable, unprofessional comments by Keane yet again, players confused and not motivated by a manager with little or no understanding of management.
Keane obviously wants to hit his players (but says he realises you can't these days!!) but has confused anger and passion, two very different emotions.
If he should have learnt anything from Sir Alex, it is that these things remain behind closed dressing room doors. No need to comment Mr Keane, the press must love you, but your players obviously don't!

Jas0999 no intent of knocking your comment ,but when players underperform [not just as an individual but as a team.]There must be a reason, that surely comes back to Roy Keane in our case .!

Stupid comments from a not very smart guy
Remember Marcus Evans has put Keane 'in charge'of this part of his business
He is failing from a Footballing and Management perspective
Gonna be an interesting meeting with ME in the summer
keane should just shut up and get on with the job of getting a team spirit and not using the old fashioned intimidation tactics that were around in the dark ages
Grow up Keane and start earning yer money
And for all the defenders of the Keane - please highlight where we have improved as a team this year -.....discuss

Some of you make me laugh. Garvan was hopeless for the opening 20mins and it was no surprise (if you went to the game) that he was taken off. He gave the ball away every time he got it. Lets not get carried away saying that keane has ruined him or he was used as a excuse. If he was playing better then he would have left him on the pitch!!! Although to put Martin on was a strange one. Norris would have been better suited.

For all those supporters who chanted Pablos name at Watford (and there was a number of you) why did you not continue to chant his name once he came onto the pitch? Was it because he was clearly out of his depth, failed to touch the ball and miss one of our best chances of the game?? He was hopeless. Supporters need to get over him. He will not be here next season and if Keane could have loaned him out in Jan then Stead would still be here.

I can't see O'Connor playing at the weekend so I guess Colback will go back there and probably Wright in place of Rosenior (Who was also shocking on Tuesday night).

Martin needs to start showing something if not then I think Keane might ship him out on loan next season to gain some confidence. He was very poor on Tuesday.

I agree with the comments about Pablo, I really dont rate him, the one thing he used to be good at was holding up the ball and playnig it off but he cant even do that anymore, whenever I hear the pablo chants start up in the crowd i fear RK may listen. Big game tomorrow and one which I think we will win, not with any help from Pablo though.

Pablo doesn't pass so no point in him holding the ball up!

Pablo on a good run looks after the ball until he sees a through ball and then is one of the best we have at threading it through - remember his assists for Haynes brace against Norwich?

Main problems for me are:

(a) Ruling by fear seems now to be the norm, players will never relax and perform. This is borne out by never going more than one up (bar Cardiff)
(b) Where's the passing gone? We played it out from the back once at Watford and I remember thinking "ah a passing move". It's the Ipswich way, but not Roy's so far. Why fight through three players when you can pass around them.
(c) Walters is well off the boil. Possibly a time to think about the captaincy as it seems to have damaged his game. Maybe a bit of bench time. McAuley is better off without the armband, maybe Jon too? A fine player but so much is untidy and bolshy about his games at the moment. He spent half of the Watford game just shoving their left back.
(d) Decide the best team and stick with it! Robson did this and it worked for him. You win a game, same team same subs. You lose a game, make a change if you want but think about giving them a chance to redeem themselves. You'll soon see who's up for it.

Just my 2p

Devontractor - "Keane obviously wants to hit his players (but says he realises you can't these days!!)" - you don't need to take it literally - what the statement doesn't show is that this was his response to a direct question, while talking about getting angry the interviewer said "like throwing teacups at players?" doesn't mean he's gutted he can't go round punching his team!

What you should take literally is the fact the he won't stand for crap individual performances, that is the one thing you can't blame him for. Regardless of what tactics are employed, as an individual player, you need to prove your worth and give 100% and if anyone can't/won't commit to that, then i would be right behing RK when he tells them to F*** Off!

Garvan is a scapegoat and quite rightly so he goes missing when it gets tough it's as simple as that we all know his quality when thee is no pressure on him but he's gotta do it away from home when its hard work he must start taking RESPONSABILITY AND THE FACT IS AT HOME CROWD BEHIND HIM HE PLAYS WELL AWAY FROM HOME PRESSURE ON HE DON'T!!! SIMPLES!!!! LOL

Unfortunately Denham you are right - Maybe , just Maybe - a season of Div One will get us playing again . ( as long as it is a season!!) Leicester and Scum seem to have benefited - I do not expect them to struggle next year - confidence and winning games is a great motivator - oh , as is a good manager
