Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Saturday, 20th Mar 2010 19:24

Town boss Roy Keane felt the Blues deserved their 1-0 victory over Barnsley but admitted that his side weren’t at their best.

Keane said: "It was a decent victory. To win without playing particularly well, we'll take that all day.

"It wasn't pretty but we'll have to take it, particularly given our position in the league - beggars can't be choosers.

"We started well, we had two or three good chances and it was a good goal that won it. Not a classic, but a good goal in the way Pablo showed a great work ethic and chased down a lost cause and that's what we want our strikers to do.

"Pablo and Daryl linked up well in the first half and we kept a clean sheet at the other end against a decent side. They are not on the edge of the play-offs for nothing.

"There has been too much talk this week, some silly headlines and criticism of two or three players. We're all in this together and I don't ask any more of my players than what I know they can produce.

"It would have been lovely to get a second goal and it would have settled the team down but it wasn't to be.

"We got an honest performance from them and that's all I can ever ask for. Whether we won or lost, it didn't really matter to me. All I wanted was an honest performance and I was content with the players.

"That's our second successive 1-0 win at home and that's always a good result."

Barnsley manager Mark Robins was embarrassed by Town’s winner: "We gave them a stupid goal. It was a comedy of errors and not one we want to repeat.

"He [keeper Luke Steele] can't explain it. He made a bad, poor decision to come out and then he left the ball on the touchline.

"After that he was always going to struggle to get back in goal. What we saw was a hot head. We shot ourselves in the foot. It was an embarrassing goal and something you rarely see.

"We're normally organised, fairly resolute and hard to break down, but today there was no doubt we gave them the goal.

"We didn't get started and were second best all over the park in the first half. Ipswich were hungrier and more energetic.

"In the second half we came out and had a go, but we'd already shot ourselves in the foot by then. It's not good enough and we've got to change that mindset.

"We had chances in the second half and huffed and puffed, but it was all about desire.

"Someone's got to want to go and put the ball in the back of the net. There were chances there but we just didn't take them. We were powder-puff."

tom_the_blue, agree that we are beginning to see a little daylight and hopefully he is learning from his many errors. Don't agree that R Wright is deadwood, player of the season 2009 and admittedly had a poor start to season, but had a non existant defence at that stage too. The defence IMO is now as good as it has been for several years but yet to be fully convinced over B Murphy as No 1 as he is not being tested anywhere near the level at start of season. His reaction saves have been good so far but command of the area not convinced at yet, seems very unsure about coming off his line to catch balls or hang back and hope defence will clear, so time will tell. Don't think Keane has written off R Wright yet either as not long back talks were under way on extension to contract.
Stead is more of a question mark and perhaps with the right service could still be ok, but if money is being offered then I could see him going. Healy (D) yet to be convinced over, perhaps if alot fitter then maybe.

Roy Keane will have to do a lot better than a 1-0 at home with( lets be honest a total gift of a goal ) & a very average performance. This current team just isn't good enough and we need to face facts, even Keane admits his own performance is below par, how quickly you all forget the numerous woeful performances this season!

Keane does not have the skills to take us to the top, if he had we'd have seen them by now, same old same old, I want better for my team...don't you???

those of you that still want keane to stay this season must be in one of the following categories:-
1) a secret budgie fan
2) naive to the extreme
3) or simply just stark, staring bonkers......

Actually im beginning to think no1 for most of you.....ok so he may keep us up wow, what a result!!!!! JUST A TAD SHORT OF WHAT WAS PROMISED AT THE START OF THE SEASON!!!! Its a fact that we are still a mess,I for one am very happy that we will remain in this division this season with any luck but we definetely need a change in the summer.....im still backing curbs,i def wouldnt mind GB coming back either-both great motivational men-actually likeable!!!!

Up the Town :)

it was a good win today and good atmouspere coming from the north stand but second half we were terrible and for some reason just hang on to a 1 goal advantage instead of pushing on for that 2nd which is crazy. i don't understand how 1 win people are praising the manager and saying he's coming goodetc, lets see if we win on tuesday before everyone starts praising keane, I still think if we lose a couple of games he will get the boot and appoint curbishly as he has been seen at a couple of our matches recently!

Hi petersongoal

You posted:

"can i just point out that out of most of the players hes managed and certainly the most succesful ones that hes managed, most of them hate him! which is (and trust me because i can tell you how i know but i do know) that is why a lot of guys last summer said NO WAY to coming to Ipswich. hes the wrong man for the job, sorry but he is."

In response to my 'abusive' reply seeking clarification you posted:

"i think you'll find i know a lot more than you because i dont waste my time being abusive on an internet forum...enough said really. now if you have a constructive comment to make then please lets hear it, otherwise i suggest you get back onto google images or youtube and try to insult someone with a smaller IQ than yourself, try typing "plankton" into your search engine!"

Only just seen your reply to my earlier post as I have been on youtube and looking at google images. My post was to suggest that if you have something of interest to post then back it up with some facts not just make unsupported claims that you know something. It just does not add anything to the discussion.

lol alfromcol! you clearly have nothing to add to the discussion yourself, i can not tell you how i know that players rejected our club because of keane because i would be in serious trouble if i told you. i did however add to the discussion this comment which is constructive to the perception of "keano" and our club from outsiders point of you. you however have made yourself look like an idiot by using foul language and posting just to cause an arguement and to try to make someone else look silly for posting something constructive when you yourself have nothing to say. perhaps you would be better suited to politics than football?

Strange that Murphy and Healy who had played for Keane before both came to PR?

Unless you can support your claims it is just tittle tattle. Surely you could name just 1 player who didn't want to join. No one knows who you are after all.

Not sure my earlier post was abusive. If you thought it was, then there is a button to use to report it

Yes I agree we should be 100% behind the team while we are playing, but my goodness after reading most of the stories on this board you are easily pleased.

We have struggled all season to pick up points with , yes Roy Keanes team. The quality of football we are watching is rubbish and cannot imagine what it would be like having to put up with another season of watching the style of football we have endured this season.

Since Marcus Evans has rescued this club we have struggled, we now have Keane and Clegg to put up with. If this club is going to improve next year start looking for a new manager. We need a leader on and off the pitch, having watched this club for over 46 years I cannot get the enthusiasm when entering Portman Road these days.

I will no doubt be shot down for saying this, but for goodness sake look beyond RK for Ipswich Town to improve in status.

I generally agree with you elmswellblue. But the arguement of the "Keane inners" will point to Roy Keane's form since the Newcastle defeat back in September. I don't know to hand what it is but I bet its almost top six form. This is evidence that with a bit of tweaking the team could be a top six team next season. So would it be unfair to sack a manager who could just be a player or two short from success.

Unfortunately both myself and elmswellblue know that the signs are not really that good. Are we really a top six team. How many top six teams have we beaten this season. Answer, only on three occasions. Cardiff twice and Blackpool at home, this is the stat that worries me. For until we start beating or even competing against the likes of Newcastle, WBA and Forest we will only be a mid table team. Who can see us winning against Swansea, Forest or Newcastle? Roy's job was to be a top six team, something I cannot see him achieving. Ok give him until next November to prove me wrong, but if still producing the same dire football as we currently see, then its time for keane to go.

Context: Championship.

When we play good football but dont score, you blame the manager because they're not winning.
When we play lesser football and win (3 of last four games) you blame the manager for poor quality.

I really think people cant come to terms with the blood and guts of this league. You can play Scunny one week, then middlesborough, then Doncaster or Newcastle the next. There are a morass of similar sized clubs to us, all just as hungry.

I maintain, notwithstanding that fact, it remains probably the most competitive league in the world at this standard.

Therefore, I want, a manager, without devout passion and even aggression, who puts fear in the eyes of the oppo, to do what it takes to get out of this league in whatever way possible so we can settle into a footballing premier league team.

I've only known Mogga and Burley to play good football and get a team promoted from this league in the last 15 years.

Seems pretty clear to me that many of the 'Keane out' posters didn't like him as a player, are probably Manu haters (there are a lot of them in Ipswich - and everywhere else, for that matter) and were never going to give him a chance.

I know some Sunderland fans who predicted this response from some 'Town fans, if things went badly. They had the same thing there.

Ho-hum.

Still, 3 points on Saturday and (hopefully), 3 more tomorrow night.

I fully understand all the discontent from town fans concerning our position in the league and particularly as we all hoped for so much more. Further the signings of Priskin, Martin, Healy etc look not just poor, but possibly the worst signings in the history of this club. Keane has not done a good job and he is the first to admit it. However he calls it as he sees it and at least we dont have the procession of town managers bemoaning how unlucky we have been....truth is we have not been good enough. I am in camp for giving Keane another year and hopefully he will have learnt from his mistakes of this season. One thing I feel is for sure if he had the right players he would not sit back and let them under perform. I'll be singing Keano again next season.

surely magilton got sacked because we failed to get into the play offs? i dont think people hate keane because of his playing career, i liked him as a player and wanted him to suceed here but it just has not worked out and never will, we have given him time, we have given him more time then a lot of clubs would have! if we was in the top 6 no one on here would want him to get sacked so i don't think anyone has got anything againts its just because he is doing a crap job! we have got no confidence going away from home because the manager dosen't give them any confidence eg watford and peterboro, i hope he gets sacked for the good of the club but some town fans probably won't agree.

actually its petersongoal mate please get it right!
strange that only a few out of the hundreds of players keane knows, has played with and has managed in his time would actually want to see him and work with him again? maybe thats the question you should be asking. and to be honest with the high profile players who say that hes a knobhead...compared to two championship quality old boys (in comparison) i think your argument is, how should i say, redundant? my claims speak for themselves mate and again your criticism is entirely unproductive. soooo if you have nothing more to say for yourself and nothing else to say in regards to myself personally or my opinions i suggest you shut up before you make yourself look even more childish! or as i like to say from my seat in the sir bobby robson stand to those annoying away fans who just don't get the picture, much like yourself. SIT DOWN, SHUT UP! good day sir! xxx
