No Contract Talks Until the End of the Season
No Contract Talks Until the End of the Season
Monday, 29th Mar 2010 17:33

Boss Roy Keane says the club are unlikely to offer new deals to this summer’s out of contract players until after the season is over. David Wright, Richard Wright and Shane O’Connor (pictured) are amongst those whose terms are up at the end of June.

Speaking prior to the game at Swansea, Keane said all thoughts are currently centred on picking up points: “I’ll be speaking to nobody about contracts in the next few weeks, the only thing we’re focused on is winning football matches. The contract situation will take care of itself.

“If we have to wait until after the last game we’ll do that. If we need to do it before that, in terms of respect for some of the players, we’ll look at it, but I don’t think any decisions will be made until after the last kick of the season.”

In addition to the two Wrights and O’Connor, Pim Balkestein, Ed Upson, Jack Ainsley, Liam Trotter, Reggie Lambe, Troy Brown, Devann Yao and Ian McLoughlin all have deals which are up this summer.

Town will also have to weigh up whether to offer permanent deals to loanees Daryl Murphy, Liam Rosenior and David Healy. Sunderland will almost certainly want Jack Colback to be part of their first team squad next season.

Keane says he will aim to trim the size of his squad ahead of 2010/11: “I think every manager will take stock of the situation in the summer, whether it’s the players out on loan when they come back or the two or three important players for us whose contracts are up. At every club there’s always an element of that.

“I think we’ve got plenty of players on our books. If you look at the players out on loan, two or three of them have at least one or two years on their contracts. It’s not about adding more players to our squad, although we might add one or two, it’s about tightening things up.

“We could possibly have a smaller squad, we probably have too many players at the moment, but we’ve got to make sure that they are the right players.”

Coaches Steve Foley and Ian McParland as well as Bryan Klug, who is still on gardening leave, are also amongst those out of contract at the end of the season.

Some interesting decisions to make. I would offer David Wright and Shane O'Conner a contract. Unfortunately I would let Richard go - probably on big money which could be better spent elsewhere. Plus he seems to be picking up injuries again.

I would also sell Pim and release Trotter. I don't really know enough about the other players to comment.

Regarding the loan players; Rosenior is worth a contract. We must try and sign Murphy, but Healy has not offered enough. Colback will return to Sunderland - we have no chance.

For the players out on loan - all of them can go if the price is right, although I very much doubt we will get very much for Bruce, Stead or Lisbie. Priskin may attract a £1M bid from QPR (if we are lucky).

I will be very very peed off if Reggie is not offered a new contract. Has a very bright future in my opinion.

it would appear therefore that the club dont give a sh** about keeping any of them?
Perhaps a new manager and 30 new players.
get rid of the lot.

Sign up Trotter for another year. He has been instrumental in Millwall's surge towards automatic promotion.

This is exactly what happened last season with uncle Jim. Keane will be in last chance saloon then. A case of letting the new manager pick his new team ? I hope not.

If Richard Wright goes we need to get a new keeper in badly, Lee-Barretts a good shotstopper but thats about all although i'd keep him as a number 2 keeper.
I dont know what he see's in Murphy, he never comes off his line for crosses, cant kick the ball and his angles are bad aswell, i'd have Wrighty in before him anytime

Keep O'Connor for definate! Offer D. Wright a contract, but work on his ball skills, brilliant defender but has been giving the ball away recently! I have been impressed whenever have seen Ainsley. I still think Trotter has what it takes. I would like to see Reggie stay and can't comment on Yao.
Happy for R. Wright (unfortunately) to go, same for Balkestein.
Rest I don't really mind whether they go or not.
And of course KEANE TO STAY!

thebeat, Murphy has had 5 clean sheets in ten games, that is pretty good!

If the youngsters are cast aside without being given a credible opportunity that will make a very loud statement about the way our academy is being run. If we cannot produce talent from within we are staring a difficult fiscal future. Good players cost a lot of money.

dannysigma - could leave a pretty empty stadium?

I'm definately in the wait and see with Brian Murphy. Yes clean sheets, well played defence as keeper has hardly been tested in those games. He seems very unsure about whether to come off his line or not and then whether to thump it or catch it, time will tell. Would definately give R Wright an extension and if we need to let a keeper go, thanks Aaron but goodbye (he was only bought in as a gap stop anyway).
Still if we are lucky it will be another manager deciding on who stays and who goes. Certainly half of what RK has bought in can go again!

i think the only thing hes concentrating on is saving his reputation by drawing as many games as possible too keep us up not winning games like he says...if only we could play 11goalkeepers roy

osborne1nil - Murphy has been probably one of the best buys of the season, everyone says outfield players have to have time to bed in well so does he, he's only played about ten games and half of those not conceeded so for me thats not a bad return, not to mention some of the Premier league saves he's made this year (Bristol City at home) ok a we drew but better than a one nil loss IMO.
Anyway, Martin can go, didn't rate him when seeing him on loan at Sheff Utd and still don't only thing is it cost us 1M + to find that out.... Pim, would have liked to see him stay but i guess we do have better players in that position. Richard Wright, i think he even knows that keano doesn't think he's N1 anymore but i would defo keep him if he's happy to sit on the bench as N2,
Trotter,Brown and Yao i would let go as i know Trotts is having a blinder for the lions but didn't he do that last time at a lower level and then come back and struggle? Obviously we will lose the likes of Colbeck, Healy, Rosinor and Murphy which out of all of them i would like to Keep Colbeck and Murphy but i think ME will have to dig deep to get them away from Sunderland, i just hope the black cats stay up to improve our chances of a double swoop in the summer, we'll give them Edwards back for free.....COYB

we agree then comeonthegoodtimes. Think that he has done well but would like to see him tested a bit more. He probably along with Leadbitter are the best RK has signed so far. Agree on Murphy and Colback but feel that Colback will not be playing for us next season as Sunderland will prob want to keep him.

itfchorry, agree r wright is quality, okay he did have a bit of a rocky start to the season but so did mcauley, there was talk of him leaving and since then he has been one of the feww consistent performers. It is the same with delany, where as IMO brian murphy has looked very shakey, and yes he has kept 5 clean sheets but only because of the solid defence, he has only had to make a handful of saves, and they were good saves but they r also saves that you would expect the keeper to make. The two goals agains Plynouth were definately partly down to him, didnt come for the 1st one and the second trickled past him, neither of them sould have happened. Wrighty is a quality stopper, any keeper with full england caps is good enough for this club.........

IMO roy should definately sign rosenior, pure quality going forward with shear pace and darryl murphy, for obvious reasons. As for david healy what you have to remeber is he has only really started a handful of games and obviusly has not got his match sharpness yet, so we need to be patient. Possibly get him on loan with view to perminent deal next summer and see how he goes....

dave26itfc - pretty sure you can't loan out your loanee. If by the end of the season he isn't showing any good signs then ever buy very cheap or decide to look elsewhere.
