Keane: Lack of Goals Came as a Surprise Friday, 9th Apr 2010 08:36
Roy Keane says the Blues’ lack of goals this season came as a surprise with skipper Jon Walters currently topping the goal charts with just seven. Town have led the Championship’s league for shots on target throughout the season, but the Blues boss says this matters little if those attempts aren’t converted into goals.
Keane said: “We’ve not scored enough goals. I think that’s been a big surprise for everybody. Jon Walters is our leading scorer with seven, when you compare to the two boys at Cardiff [Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham] and the Forest strikers, seven goals tells a story in itself; you’re not going to get in the top six with someone with seven goals as your top scorer.”
The Football League’s official statistics show that the Blues have managed 347 shots on target so far this season, 31 ahead of West Brom in second, but Keane says this is of no consequence: “Attempts on goals is like going to a nightclub, you could speak to 50 girls but if you’re going home on your own it’s no good, is it? You could only speak to one and go home with her!”
The Town manager admits that the season as a whole hasn’t been good enough, but hopes that supporters can see that progress is being made: “We’re not kidding ourselves, we know we’ve let the fans down far too much this season. I’m not going to Nottingham Forest thinking ‘I’m going back, I used to play for them’. People who know me know I don’t work that way, I’m going up there to win.
“I think the supporters enjoyed going to Derby on Monday, they travelled in decent numbers, there was a good atmosphere there, and they enjoyed the Reading game.
“What we want them to see is that things are turning. There’ll be more setbacks along the way without a shadow of a doubt, but we want to give them something to shout about because we’ve not done so this year.
“As much as I say we’ve been unlucky with the draws, we can’t keep saying that. Football’s not all about ‘lucky’, you’ve got to get over that finishing line.”

Laugh out loud. Love the nightclub quote. Pity Sky didn't show that. You can tell he's had a drink with Ian Holloway after that game.

As I see it this is what would do to get us a chance of promotion in goal keep all three keepers we need three anyway Murphy as number 1 Wright as backup In defence would keep rosiener and d wright in centre got mcaulay, dellany, Smith and Eastman, would sell pim and hopefully Leicester will take Bruce. on left sign oconnor up and sign up a experience left back lee naylor from celtic or maybe joe mattock from wba on loan as he might not get games in prem. Midfield offload Quinn and maybe can do some swap deal with palace them takin martin a we having ambrose, trotter can get small fee for too then we have garven, leadbitter, Norris, Edwards hopefully colback back on loan, walters, peters and a fit again civelli. Up front Wickham as main man and would sign murphy, give healy back, sell priskin, lisbie, stead a maybe pablo a make huge effort to sign ebanks blake from wolves he never plays there and would be gr8 for us if not chopra. What do u lot think? COYB

I'm not sure that analogy works. You should only shoot if you're certain you're going to score?

Quality Keano. Its going to get better, make my words. As for Ip24 thoughts you're not far off and am sure Keane will be having similar ideas. The keepers and back four looked sorted but an experienced leftback wouldnt go amiss. Midfield is the problem. Not much height or goals in the current lot. If Garvan was quicker/stronger he'd be nailed on team sheet so i have an issue with him. Leadbitter had more defensive role at sunderland and norris is best at breaking up play but neither seem comforable in front of goal. Peters also has no natural instinct for goal and on Walters past form he's had an indifferent season. Still not sure about Civelli (coming or not!) so i'd like to see at least one attcking midfielder added to squad. Ebanks or Chopra would be good signing to add to Murphy/Wickham as we've short of real pace/quick feet. Pablo is an enigma and since he loves Ipswich, i'm not sure he'll be easy to ship out. I'd try him in the hole behind two up front but not sure thats a tactic the Keane would use. Whatever happens its going to be interesting!

I love Keane's analogy! Charlie Adam + Rickie Lambert/Ebanks-Blake + experienced left back = promotion.

calm down everyone. so keane uses a holloway-style quote. does that really make him a 'legend'?

You can come up with dozens of colourful quotes and be a real media darling but if you can't get a team remotely close to promotion with all the money you've had to spend then you can't be much of a manager.

Well... let's hope next season we work on our behaviour in the club and get out of there with enough girls to make an orgy at home:) And for that we need several golden boys like Murphy and perhaps a proven talent like Chopra...

Totally agree with northstands comments, but the keane idolisers are easily pleased with a few witty press comments. And as for being surprised at lack of goals - maybe, just maybe it is linked to his constant desire to play very samey hardworking midfielders with little desire for any width or creativity. But he gives a good quote so let's worship him

Why are some still going on about Jordan Rhodes? Would he have scored at this level - who knows. Bottom line - he's gone - get over it.

Keane idolisation is a reflexive approach to the incredible negativity that the keane 'outers' display on a weekly basis, having no concept of where we have come from, and the context of how we get to where we are going. I thank god it is none of you that run the club, nor have the sway of the fortunately intelligent board we presently have. We have a great manager for many, many reasons. He needs to spend money in the summer. And if as I anticipate, he comes good next season (though it will be an almighty battle regardless) I have no doubt you'll level the familiar attack of 'oh yeah, but look how much he spent'. I have long since come to terms with the fact that football clubs have a fairly representative following in society, which means of course there are a fair share of vacant, ill-reasoned people. Though, I shouldn't like to take away the weekly vent, in your lives. :-)
