Town Begin Season At Middlesbrough
Town Begin Season At Middlesbrough
Thursday, 17th Jun 2010 09:00

Town will face Middlesbrough away on the opening day of the 2010/11 npower Championship season. The first week of the season will see Blues supporters spend most of the time on the road with a trip to Exeter in the first round of the Carling Cup confirmed yesterday.

After the visits to the Riverside on Saturday 7th August and St James’ Park in midweek, Burnley are the first visitors to Portman Road on the following Saturday. Town visit George Burley’s Crystal Palace a week later with a home game against Bristol City completing the August fixtures.

September sees a visit to Portsmouth, QPR and Cardiff making the trip to Portman Road and ends with games at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park and Reading's Madejski Stadium.

The derbies against Norwich City are currently scheduled for Saturday 27th November at Carrow Road and Saturday 23rd April at Portman Road. The former is likely to move to a lunchtime kick-off the next day as is usually the case, but the home match may not be able to switch as it is scheduled for the Easter weekend with a game at Swansea due to be played on the Monday.

Watford visit Suffolk on Boxing Day, while the Blues travel to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on New Year’s Day.

Town’s run-in sees April start with Burnley away, Palace and Middlesbrough at home, Bristol City away, the Easter games against Norwich and Swansea, then Preston at home and finally Leicester away on Sunday 8th May.

Nightmare midweek trips are kept to a minimum, the Exeter Carling Cup game aside, although there is a visit to Derby on Tuesday 1st February.

In reality it really doesnt matter who weve got and when, if we are to be promoted then we need to be better than all the other teams, so need to be able to beat them all home and away (I know a 100% record is not realistic, but that should be the aim)

Pretty tough start & first couple of months but will be a tough season. Lets hope we get off to a flyer to make up for last season. Good start against some of the first teams we face and we'll be well on our way!

Lets hope for some new faces in July and that they can gel in time for the start of the season

Good news, my nearest game first up!!

Pity one of the anti town 'fans' got in before me. We should start the season by banning these miserable 'fans' and get on with celebrating promotion on April 23rd

Come on

sonian blue & BerlinBlue - i respect your opinions. but isnt this a fan's forum? I will be there singing as hard as you both but you must admit the football last season was probably the worst Portman Road has seen in 20 years.

Singing as hard as us for the opposition? ....hoping we lose?
Why not go sing with the scummers up the road as you have a common goal.

got to agee with cheeseboy, a really hard start for us and we probally going to lose the majority of the first 5 or 6 games (based on last years football) so the finger will be pointed at keane and we can get a new manager in before it all goes tits up again.

A bad start to the season matters. I hoped for a few easier games to get our confidence up, then take that through to the rest of the season. Rather than take a few months to find form after a rough start. Look at what happened last season.

I think it's a great set of fixtures because it will give a true indication of our place in the scheme of things. Coming away from Middlesbrough is a cause for rejoicing on any occasion, but image how good it'll feel if we do it with 3 points.

I blame Robert Peston, but it seems to be the new thing to be downbeat, depressing and turgid, and claim anyone who isn't has their head in the sand.

Morning GITS(copyright G Smallpiece San Salvador)! Incisive piece of writing from TWTD, reading out a list of fixtures. I can tell you all exclusively that Keano is working hard in preparation for the new season. In fact, he began this work straight after the delicious performance against SheffU. His main focus is flogging Boy Wonder. The 'Lamb' Cops thing is all hype. I have full confidence in Keano. FORK! POMS! COYB!

Small boy: Cops....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Shame we start away from home but good to start against a smaller club at least. Although I won't be going as Middlesbrough is the scruffiest town in England and I don't want to breathe in that chemical stench that hangs over the town.

You can't say yet whether it's a hard or easy start. Ok, Middlesbrough isn't the easiest game, but after that we have Palace, Portsmouth, QPR and Cardiff in the next 5 games. Can anyone honestly say they know where these sides will be in a few days time, let alone by August? How long will Burley take to shape his Palace side? Will Portsmouth have any players by then? How many managers will QPR have got through? Will Cardiff have managed to keep hold of their best players and, if not, who will they get as replacements? Should have a good idea where all those sides are by the end of September, but you can't say anything yet. We might have faced all of the top 6, we could have faced most of the relegation contenders.

I understand the comments against cheesboy and i rate keane about a poor a person and manager as we've every had in charge, but he's right in one way. If keanes not going to do it for us a very bad start is better than a long slow lingering death of a season . If we have a great start then how can you moan, even if you think he's not the right guy, some of us if the season goes well may have to eat our words. Its not an ideal start though, middlesboro I expect to be far better than last season and burnley could go either way, palace away is never easy. What keane can't afford is poor results of course but if he gets poor results and poor performances he might not last to september

Finally, it's getting nearer to the time when we kick off again. I predict that Keane will make some uninspiring signings (again) and after languishing around the foot of the table until October, Marcus will finally wake up and give Keano the much deserved boot. And maybe then all the starstruck, blind pro-Keano's will admit that he was crap from the start !!!! I doubt it though. If we were bottom of the league at Christmas some of these dimwits would still utter the same nonsense of their hero needing more time to build a team blah blah blah blah...

For us to be a good side we need the players to know their job and role, its very difficult when players are changed week in week out, their position and role is swapped every week. That doesn't mean you have to be inflexible, burley developed a side that could easily switch formations, but when they did it was seamless, because they had worked hard on it in training and were comfortable with it on the pitch. Poor performance reflects leadership in all walks of life
