Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Friday, 9th Jul 2010 14:13

Crystal Palace boss George Burley has revealed that Town have turned down his £100,000 offer for midfielder Owen Garvan. Garvan is understood to be amongst the eight players manager Roy Keane has made available for transfer.

Former Blues boss Burley said: “Owen hasn’t been getting a game and I would like to take him. He’s a good passer of a ball and someone who I feel who can do well for me. He’s my type of player.

“We’re short of players at Palace and I have several irons in the fire to increase our squad as soon as possible. As regards Garvan, a loan is possible for an initial down payment with more to come later. I’m hopeful I can sign Owen.”

Town are understood to want £400,000 for the 22-year-old Irish U21 international skipper, who joined the Blues from Dublin side Home Farm after leaving school.

Meanwhile, Burley has confirmed that former Blues loanee Stern John will not be returning to Selhurst Park for next season having failed to appear for pre-season training. The Trinidadian's Eagles contract was up at the end of the season.

Yes Gavern My type of player to! one of the best players we have who can pass, looked a much better side when Garvern played on the rare times he was picked. End of the day if we were to sell him for 400k who can you buy for that to replace him? With the right manager like Burley he could be one of the best players in the championship, shame we have Keane and not Burley. ( We are no longer a passing football team, with this muppet in charge.

I think garvan would do well under George and fit in with the palace midfield. I reckon he will go for around £250,000 burley was really trying to grab a bargain and fair play keane is under pressure to sell.Less than a month to go till the new season and years gone by you really look forward to it but this season its like we are starting where we left off last season. We are no better on paper if anything we have gone a little backwards.

Don't want Garvan to go, but for his sake a move to Palace where he will play for a manager that likes to play a passing game will be a good thing. Then once Pablo goes that is us about done as far as skill is concerned. I assume this Direct football style that a previous poster seems to enjoy so much and quotes as the English style is the same style of football our international team used to such success in the world cup. What style do Holland and Spain use? that would be a passing game, a bit like ITFC used to do under Robson. Unfortunately our direct football style last season was the reason we finished lower than we had done for decades. Please don't force it on us fans again.

Garvan is a real class act. Those who don't like him are just part of the mindless English majority that still think football is about running around alot and getting the ball in the box. The game has moved on, these days it's about skill and intellegience, especially in midfield. Garvan has these attributes in abundance and will go on to be a premiership player. He just needs a manager to beleive in him and a team that play decent possession football: step forward Mr Burley. I still hope RK can see the error of his ways before Garvan is given away for peanuts.

I completly agree I will be watching palace quite a bit this coming season. To be honest I like all styles of football when they are done well. The point I was trying to make was you have to play to your squads strengths, otherwise you will never win games. Germany played a direct counter attacking style in the world cup and they did alright and scored a lot of goals in the process. The key to making direct football fun to watch is to have pacy wingers or forwards that put fear into the oppositions defense when the team breaks and runs at them with the ball. Last season we used a direct system and in the end we made the most chances out of anybody else in the Championship, we also used this system in the Joe Royle days and we used to win by outscoring our opponents, mainly because our strikers took their chances. I feel very hopeful about this season as I believe with a bit of stability we will bury our chances and with an older more experienced Conner Wickham the future looks very bright.

A couple of seasons back Garvan was one of our top boys with most of our build up/link play going via him. Great vision, killing passes & occasional goals (eg Plymouth away). £100k would be laughable. When Leadbitter arrived most of the play was routed via him so don't think the 2 are compatible on the pitch. Whilst Leadbitter was quality when he arrived on the scene, he's rarely off the pitch even when having an off day. I know there's many comments on here re Garvan's lack of pace & tackling but I don't remember Glenn Hoddle being renowned for either. Interestingly, he fell out of favour with certain national managers during his career despite his unboubted ability. Not suggesting Garvan is in same league as Hoddle but he is more than good enough for C'ship. I want to keep him as he can change a game.

I must admit though the passing game is very good to watch when a team completly dominates possesion. I can remember in the Burley days not caring if we win or lose because you knew you were going to see a good game. The direct style of play creates more chances to score and therefore gives a team a better chance of winning games thus increasing the chance of promotion and survival. At the end of the day we want to be back in the EPL and if you take Arsenal as an example of a team that plays the passing game they havent won any silverware in five years now and they dont make as many chances as Chelsea because they always try to walk the ball into the net. The fans don't seem to care though because they see good football week in week out and they have a good youth policy. Also its kind of irrelevant comparing club football to international football as some countries are better than others mainly down to the individual talent of the players. I.e at club level you can sign who ever you want but at international level you are stuck with what you have. With the likes of Spain they could just as easily play a direct style its just their squad is more capable on the ball than England's and with Holland they have toned down their flair and it has propelled them into the final. You have to mould you tactics around your players.

I said last week that George would try and snap up Garvan as he knows quality passing footballers and likes his sides to play that way .
To those saying what has he done in the last few years ? He has assisted over 20 goals more than any other player in that time ,scored 7 the season before Keane took over more than Keanes signings put together last season .
We should be building a team around Garvan like George will but that doesnt suit the kick and rush we will be playing sorry "direct football".
He is still a young man learning his trade and will become a very established footballer a lot more likely under Georges guidance than Roys .
Garvan,Wright already there wouldnt be suprised to see Counago or Stead also linking with Ambrose ,Palace may suprise a few people next season .
Did people not watch Leadbitter and Norris together last season it does not work same as Gerrard and Lampard for England unless we bypass the middle and work hard ,and there we have it

@ Surco72 Yeah Crystal Palace will be one to watch, as for the stats though Garvan has actually had his best spell of games to assists ratio under Keano and Garvan from 2005 to now has had 19 assists, Walters since 2007 to now has had 21 assists. Also Keano's loan signings put together 12 goals last season. Keano should keep Garvan, having looked at the stats for last season it seems obvious that Keano can get the best out of Garvan because 5 assists to 11 games is a great ratio. If we can settle into the 4-3-3 then Garvan will get more games as well.
