Clegg: Deals Could Be Done Before Exits
Clegg: Deals Could Be Done Before Exits
Thursday, 15th Jul 2010 20:23

Chief executive Simon Clegg says boss Roy Keane will be given the cash to sign the right player at the right price before any unwanted members of his squad are moved on. However, Clegg says no deals are currently imminent.

The Blues chief executive says potential targets are being eyed: “There is nothing likely to happen for a while, but we have players we are looking at and if it was thought they would make a big difference — and the price was right — a deal could be struck without having to clear the decks first.”

A fortnight ago, Keane revealed that the Blues had failed to land his main two targets, understood to be Crystal Palace skipper Shaun Derry, now with QPR, and Cardiff’s Michael Chopra, but felt that one of those deals could be revived.

Clegg and owner Marcus Evans are keen to reduce the wage bill and the club have circulated a list of eight players who are available for transfer.

Last week, Crystal Palace boss George Burley made his interest in midfielder Owen Garvan known, but Keane denied that the Blues had received a formal bid.

The fact of the matter is, either keane is doing sod all and sitting on his arse all day, or he's made bids but no one wants to come and no managers want to do business with him.....either way he has to go NOW so we can get in a man who can get teams playing good football and who can sign defeat players and not at silly prices before the season starts

ChambersM: I don't know about you, given your post, but as an ITFC fan I don't want him to sign "defeat" players... I'd prefer if he signed "Victory" players myself!
As far as your ridicules statement about RK sitting on his backside or no one wants to sign for him, have you been living under a rock for 6 weeks? Or perhaps you took a trip to the moon or the funny farm, because you obviously haven't been following what's been going on at ITFC. RK agreed fee's for two players, spoke to them, they wanted to sign, then ME/Clegg fail to agree terms… The following week Clegg states that RK MUST reduce wage budget by getting rid of players before he's allowed to sign any new players… It's only been the last 24 hours that Clegg has done a complete U-Turn and said RK can sign the right players at the right price… So given all that how in hell was RK expected to be able to have signed anyone up to this point?
It's idiotic posts like yours that give those who obviously have no love for RK and want him out, such a bad name. By all means give an opinion that you dislike RK (For whatever reason) but don't make up total rubbish like you have just posted. I find myself constantly defending RK on here and I'm not even a big RK fan, but I do think the total clap trap written by some against him needs to be argued against as it is based on ... well nothing, most of it. (Not all, there are the odd post that has reasoned argument in them)

dodgy phone spelling sorry ....*decnt players*

and what you say about the two players wanting to sign, thats two out of the 5 he wanted with 3 weeks to the start of the season....and the fact clegg and evans couldnt sort out a deal maybe we need to look at them and ask, can we tust them?

I have a suggestion as to how we can dramatically improve our prospects and reduce the wage bill. Get rid of Cleggy !!!! Some-one please explain to me what benefit he is to our club? He can't arrange a pre-season schedule, appears to stall transfer talks when players have been identified by RK, doesn't seem to know what is going on at the club (no deals are currently imminent, apart from signing Conor from Sunderland) and he seems to believe the fans will accept any 'spin' he decides to spew out, on the all too rare occasions he speaks to us.

ChambersM: has the penny dropped then? the only reason we haven't signed anyone up to today (We have just signed a young 19 year old midfileder...) was down to ME/Clegg... not down to RK. Now please don't get me wrong, I'm not saying RK is the messiah or anything similar and in fact you can understand some reluctance on the part of ME/Clegg given a quick look at RK's record in the transfer market, BUT, look at the top clubs records as well... Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool... look at their records and you see that about 50% of it is rubbish! Or has appeared to be to date... they may well have signed players for the future, as maybe we did... but I don't think so! A 50% hit rate on signings is about right, which is a shame... maybe the way forward is more young talent like we have signed today... if it doesn't work out, it hasn't cost you a packet.
I do think their is a smog over Portman Road at the moment, where some will find negativity in whatever happens... too many Victor Meldrew's about for my liking... then again I'm normally a bit like that!

SiBo, I genuinely look at the squad and see the weakest set of players I have seen for a long time. We have no recognised right back, no experienced left back (to cover loss of form etc for O Connor), no creativity in the middle of midfield, no decent width (Martin and Edwards both very poor signings, Walters not the player he was, Civelli coming back from a career threatining injury) and finally a woeful lack of quality up front. Wickham will obviously be a big player next year but at his age will have to be rested at times and taken out of the firing line. Stead, Lisbie and Counago have been told they are on the transfer list (which I don't disagree with) which only leaves Priskin. Despite the fact we all hope that he comes good, the signs do not look good at present. There are certainly no players who look as if they can create that bit of magic in a game or do something exciting. It will be the same old slow pedistrian play in the midfield followed by the long balls from the back. That said I really hope to be proved wrong and find that a settled squad bears fruits but I just can't see it.

Jim: Whilst I actually agree with a lot of your assessments there, I don't think it's the weakest we have been in a long while and I think there were some mitigating circumstances last year. Norris never really recovered from his early injury and a proper run from pre-season will hopefully see him back to his best. Civelli fit is a big bonus. I have a feeling Martin will settle better this year and show us why we paid so much for him. The McAuley/Delaney partnership will start the season (rather than from about Jan) and once they started playing together we looked a much better team defensively. RK appears to have finally given up on Pablo and Stead and last year they flattered to deceive. Like you, I'm concerned about Priskin... not showing why we paid all that money. Like you the Full Back positions look weak on paper, but I think O'Connor will show he can sustain it and I'm hopeful that Peters can show he can do it too... Although this would be my number 2 target area for a new player after another striker to play alongside Wickham... which i think we will now get as Clegg has confirmed the purse strings have been loosened.
So whilst I agree with some of your assessments, I'm still hopeful of a decent season.

SiBo . I've read your messages which seem to be contradictory - You don't like people attacking Keane as the most useless manager we've had for a long time ( my opinion ) yet you seem to defend him ! Keane does seem to have given up on a lot of players - too many and then occasionally backtracks - the man is a liability with the hapless players never knowing where they stand .I would keep Pablo, Garvan , Stead and Priskin . With the right man in charge I reckon they could all perfom well. Keane is a confidence destroyer and needs to go SOON. The team needs a manager who can unite and bring pride back to our club . We don't need this fickle, temperamental man at the helm !

I do really hope for a good season, and If we can get some sort of decent start then who knows! The single biggest frustration for me last season was that when Keane first came in, although I wasn't overwhelmed at the appointment, I did at least feel that his standing in the game would attract some quality to our squad (Magilton's policy of signing a lot of average players rather than a couple of quality ones was ultimately what cost him his job for me). However it is fair to say his record in the transfer market has been poor to say the least. Priskin and Martin have a lot to prove, Edwards looks a player who has his best years behind him, Rosenoir no better than we already had, Stern John on loan still makes me laugh just thinking about how useless he was. Yes there have been a couple of decent signings. Delaney came very good after a difficult start and the goalkeeper looks solid enough. Leadbitter is probably the best of the lot, although if the price tag of around £3m is correct then we have paid way over the odds. The big concern is if he will be trusted in the transfer market. The reports seem to suggest that he has to offload a few before anybody can come in, but its difficult to see who would want them on the wages that they are apparently on. Just all adds up to a fairly gloomy prospect at the moment, and I sincerely hope that we are not served up the same football as last season. At times it was an effort to go (although I did get behind them and tried to save the negativity until after the game).

P.S I missed Colin Healy out from the bad signings because I actually missed the Leicester and Palace games due to holiday, so have actually never seen him play. (although people who went to the game that I have spoken to also say they too have never seen him play!!!!)
