Bruce Set for Sheffield United Switch
Bruce Set for Sheffield United Switch
Monday, 19th Jul 2010 16:10

TWTD understands that Town have accepted a bid from Sheffield United for defender Alex Bruce. The 25-year-old is likely to complete his move to Bramall Lane in the next few days with the fee probably in the region of £200,000.

Bruce was amongst the eight available players whose names have been circulated to other clubs.

The 25-year-old, who has a year left on his Town contract, spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester. A permanent move to the Foxes fell down after manager Nigel Pearson moved on to Hull City.

The switch is likely to see manager Roy Keane move into the transfer market for an additional central defender with Damien Delaney out for three months with his thigh injury. Gareth McAuley and Tommy Smith are likely to be the club’s first choice defenders with the only cover youngsters Troy Brown and Tom Eastman.

Not sure why Keane is getting stick for the transfer value - the fee would probably be negotiated by Clegg and/or ME.

Players have been identified to sell (whether people agree with the personnel is neither here nor there), and one of them is on his way freeing up salary and getting some money into the coffers so that sounds like Part 1 of 8 complete. Next!

Whilst I liked Bruce's attitude as he always gave his all... frankly he just wasn't good enough. It's pretty obvious he got the armband when RK first took over because of his attitude, but then RK realised he wasn't as good as he thought.
If memory serves me right, we got him on a free from Birmingham, so £200k for a player we don't beleive is good enough is good business. Not least given he is supposedly one of the higher wage earners, freeing up that wage budget to allow RK to buy.
I would NOT go and buy another CB... we have some dcent young talent on the books and as long as McAuley stays fit to be the older head in the back 4, I'd let the youngsters take the load. They can hold the fort until Delaney is fit... if they can't, we'll know soon enough, so still time to bring in a more experianced CB if we have to, (Even a 3 month loaner) but I don't think we ned it... we still need the firepower... A finisher should be our no1 target in my opinion... we created more shots on goal than any other Championship team last season... so let's get someone to finish those chances.

I love some of you on here, really loyal to a so far lousy manager and diss most of our players. Well Alex me old son I wish you all the best, you always gave 100% when I saw you play & I hope you get more respectful fans in Sheffield.
Great time to sell you too, at least you have first team experience!!

Good luck unless you come against us.
Makes sense to sell now. A year on contract and he wont renew so let him go now for a fee.

Good luck Bruce. I can see why Lisbie is taking a while to move. He's probably too busy trying to pick which 'lucky' team of the 100's ringing him, will get his services.
And I still can't believe Peters is lined up for right back. I'm sure he is better on the wings, with his pace or as he is versatile being a sub to cover for people. Rather than being stuck in the same postion.
One last thing, I know Pablo and he said to me that he is not going to leave. So it means the transfer list is of at the most 7 players rather than the 8 stated.

Was never good enough to start but good for cover ,to me again highlights Keanes lack of judgement over a player - made him club captain after dropping Mac and telling him to find another club !!! Few months later not good enough and we try to get rid ,flip another coin Roy you may change your mind again
