Keane: Town Closing in On Signings
Keane: Town Closing in On Signings
Friday, 23rd Jul 2010 12:09

Town boss Roy Keane says the Blues have had an offer accepted for a player and could have as many as three new additions to the squad, one a loanee, in time for the friendly against West Ham a week on Saturday. So far, the only signing of the summer is youngster Conor Hourihane, who joined from Sunderland last week.

Keane told the club site: "I was hoping that we could have got a couple of players in earlier but things take time in football and I've not been too worried about it.

"We are making progress now though, and we've had one offer accepted for a player this morning, so I've got to try and finalise things with that.

"We are close on that deal and with another player, which will be a year-long loan.

"There could also be movement with another player coming in as well, so I'll be talking to two or three players over the next few days.

"The players concerned include two that I had in mind at the end of last season. I had a target list of four or five players and, while you rarely get all five, if I get two out of the five I will be pleased.

"Until the players are here and have signed though, there is nothing to get excited about."

The permanent signing may be Sunderland keeper Márton Fülöp, who Black Cats boss Steve Bruce, presumably speaking yesterday, has confirmed was the subject of a Town enquiry.

The Blues and Cardiff have been unable to agree a fee for striker Michael Chopra, although the Bluebirds may ultimately have decided to accept an offer for the former Sunderland striker given their ongoing financial problems and the frontman's outburst regarding their current situation. Cardiff central defender Gábor Gyepes has also been linked in recent days.

Possible loan signings mooted this summer include Tottenham winger Andros Townsend. The second permanent signing Keane mentions could potentially be free agent Steve Finnan, who was linked last week.

Working on the basis that Kean has said that the 2 singings are two of his list from the end of the season you have to look at the players he knew were definately going:

David Wright = Steve Finnan
Richard Wright = Martin Fulop
Lizbie/Stead/Counago/Priskin = Chopra
Martin/Garvan/Colback = Townsend

No chance we'll get Hooper as read yesterday that he's currently finalising a deal with a premiership club (possibly Newcastle, although it might have been Everton, I can't quite remember).

But I'm with Devontractorboy on this, calm down ladies and all will be revealed - plus if you get too excited you'll get all down in the dumps if it's Ian Harte and Robbie Savage - with Emile Heskey on loan with a view to a new 5 year deal!

Presumably the signings are a goalie we patently don't need, a burnt out relic we don't want.... and some complete dud/pointless loanee who will block off more promising home-grown players.

new GK = competition for places. Can only be a good thing to keep them on their toes. Besides, Keane hasnt said he's only allowed one signing.

More than likely Fulop and Gyepes and a striker on loan, but I hope Chopra is on his way. Anyway happy days lets hope all three will sign. You never know if these players sign we might even add another.

Lets face it, if chopra isnt in these 3 Potential signings. Then he will be next, Keano would have read the news on cardiff and go in with a bid which they will have to take to bail themselves out. Its just gotta be!!
WHATS TAHT COMING OVER THE HILL? IS IT A MONSTER! NO ITS CHOPRA, NO ITS CHOPRAA!

From what ive heard this townsond sounds a good young player with pace, which is something i feel weve lacked since haynes went, edwards never really wanted to use his pace. could be a good move

Well yet again, some so called 'fans' find a negative.

DietmarVanNostrilBoy - surely the announcement that possibly three new players may be jopining us next week deserved a little bit more of a positive comment?

This is clearly good news.

Jas0999 it may be good news like Leadbitter, Delaney or Colback but equally could be bad news like C.Healy ,Brown ,Priskin,Martin,Edwards,ALB, Murphy,D.Healy,John ?
Just because they are new doesnt guarantee anything ,sometimes better the devil you know etc ,only time will tell .
But yet again ,some so called "fans " are already hailing it as a Keane master stroke

Incredible... All the monaers moaning we haven't signed anyone... now finally we are close on 3 deals and... oh they are still moaning! What a bunch of complete [insert whatever you like here] some of you posters are!
I read on another thread that if we signed Wayne Rooney some of you would still moan he was ugly and thought that a bit harsh... I've reconsidered... it was spot on!

I think Keane has learnt from last year not to shout out about potential signings till they're in the bag. My guess is these deals are just about 100% done and are looking forward to finding out who they are. I'd be happy with any of the names mentioned so far.

Seems like a lot is happening both in and out. The squad is far too big and full of players which even the most die hard of Town fans must agree are average at best. It needs trimming and some quality added. (Chopra?)

Hopefully this time next week things will be looking a lot rosier and i will be more positive about the new season.

Up the Town!

Not just paper talk - from the horses mouth... Good stuff - we need new faces and a little transfer action. Let's hope we off load and add the right players. It's all about balance and getting the right mix. Fingers crossed...

This all sounds very familiar, and similar statements have led to much disappointment in the past...

Like RK said: "Until the players are here and have signed though, there is nothing to get excited about..."

Wait until the players have signed until deciding whether this is a positive thing or not...

@SiBo and others:
Most reasonable posters who are highlighting our less than impressive performance in the transfer market, both incoming and outgoing, are not just fair weather supporters who constantly look for reasons to moan. We are longtime fans (32 years in my case) who care deeply about the club and have been watching football for long enough to be able to recognise the good and bad managerial perfomances in not just our own club.
It is becoming clear that the 3 signings spoken of at the moment are likely to be Kennedy, Fulop and Townsend as the loan player. My less than enthusiastic reaction (not quite the same as a moan) is becase I think Kennedy is not a recognised experienced full back having played must of his career as a winger and is also 34 - I would be much happier with Finnan (after passing the medical) who is a better player and has played full back at the highest level. Our current options are Peters and O'Connor, both hugely inexperenced, especially at full back. Whch brings me back to lettng David Wright go. I was surprised then, but I was sure RK had a deal done for a replacement already, it's bizarre that he hadn't when letting a good solid player go in a position we needed cover in anyway.
Fulop is a decent player, but is a goakeeper a priority right now? Hence my lack of joy at the pospect. Murphy & Lee-Barrett have both done fine for us last season. We badly need 2 full backs, a centre half, a central midfielder who can create and a 'goal scoring' striker.
I must admit that I know nothing about Townsend so he might be a good addition, but I can't get excited about he joining without seeing him first. Welbeck and Cleverly would both be good loan signings and would have me far more positive, and that brings me to my final point.
When there is speculation of "interest" in an unconfirmed player, some people get on her with all kinds of suggestions about who it might be, followed by stuff like "in Keane we trust" and "COYB" etc. and then have a go at anyone who tries to bring reality to story by calling them moaners or suggesting that they are not "true" Ipswich fans - the sheer nerve of that!
If the 3 players were signed and turned out to be Chopra, Finian and Cleverly/Welbeck (as some people are on here getting excited about) then I would be pleased and consider it good business and would be happy to come on here and praise the manager for getting the right type of player for the area we need to fill (Chopra's price considered). However it appears that none of them are among the real 3 that are linked.
Oh, one other thing, Garvan was a player we all had huge hopes for and is undoubtedly very talented. If you were told 2 years ago that he would be sold to Crystal Palace for £300/400k how long would it take you stop laughing at the ridiculousness of it? I can see him being sold on for £2m to a Premiership club this time next year after a season under a different manager.

Excellent post LenBrennan. And like you say, not a moan, but being cautious due to the fact that nothing has happened yet and also based on previous transfers which don't inspire a huge amount of confidence. Fingers crossed keane gets it right this time, because if he doesn't it won't just be the end of keane but possibly the end of Towns chances for seasons to come.
