Town Linked With Ex-Manchester United Keeper
Town Linked With Ex-Manchester United Keeper
Saturday, 24th Jul 2010 23:33

Town have held talks with former Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll, according to one of Sunday's tabloids. The 32-year-old, who is currently with Odense BK in Denmark, played alongside Blues boss Roy Keane at Old Trafford.

Keane is said to be ready to offer Carroll the chance to return to the UK, the 19-times capped Northern Irish international having been named the 2009 Goalkeeper of the Year in Denmark.

Enniskillen-born Carroll started his career with Hull City, subsequently moving on to Wigan Athletic, Manchester United, West Ham United, Rangers and Derby County prior to signing a three-year deal with Odense last summer.

Town are certainly on the lookout for another keeper with Keane having said he likes to have three glovesmen on the books on a number of occasions.

On Friday, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce confirmed that the Blues had made an enquiry regarding Márton Fülöp after reports that Town had tabled a £1 million bid for the Hungarian international.

I don't know where this obsession with keepers has come from. We need a striker.

He would be cheaper and leave cash for a striker ! He would only be back- up anyhow !

I dont get people saying 'strikers are our priority not goalies' - yes we need a goalscorer but if them deals are not available straight away it does not mean we should not be looking at other areas. I think a keeper is needed when you look at our squad...although maybe only as backup.

I agree with meekreech. Cheap and only backup. Why spend a load of cash for a benchwarmer. He may be crap but at least he brings some premiership knowledge kind of ;-)

Am i the only one who thinks we need a number 1 keeper? Fulop fits the bill and is Roys first choice, i think, Carroll is just you dont put all your eggs in one basket!!

Brian Murphy is number one and he deserves to remain there so the addition of Roy Carroll would surely be back up.

Chambersm : how does a fleet street journalist, from the news of the world no less, who 'suggests' a possible link, make our club a joke?

why does he keep chasing more keepers after the 2 he got last year does this mean he thinks his other 2 are rubbish ?

La Liga newcomers Hercules have launched a bid to land Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop, skysports.com understands. Sort of gives this "rumour" some creedence but there a better keepers out there.

Yes - a massive fee and massive wages - such are the high levels of reward in this unknown Danish team... He'd be cheap and wouldn't demand high wages. We do need 3 keepers - at the moment we have two. Fulop would be my choice - now he would cost us in a fee & wages, Carroll wouldn't be so pricey. I think Murphy is decent - but why not competition & cover in this department. Folks on here are making an error assuming that we are getting a keeper instead of a striker - not the case. Chopra's words and the nightmare that is Cardiff will mean that he will come to town - be patient...

I think we are being mis-managed. This is suely not our priorty. I am dreading this season, I think we're in deep trouble before a ball is kicked.

ME, clegg and keane could well be working on our 'priority'. This link doesn't nean THIS is the priority.

slowerball added 09:37 - Jul 25
So then - the club shouldn't buy anyone else or look at any other positions until we have bought a striker and that we buy players in order of priority? It doesn't work like that... I think some folks on here need to take a wider view and think before they post.

I'M QUITE UPBEAT regards this season not lots of chopping and changing as yet, a few fringe players going out a few new faces soon, could go well. Just remember if we had managed a point a game for the first 13 games last year, the way we finnished we would have just about made the play offs. Bring it on!!

I agree, I think this coming week is going to be quite interesting and could give some real enthusiasm and momentum going into season.

Carroll is a very good goalie on his day. But he is prone to some major gaffs. I woulld prefer Fulop who is very consistent and did well for Man city for a g few games when rusty ( hadnt played in first team for ages due to Gordon )

My simplistic way of looking at football and winning is that you need two excellent players , a top goalie to keep just a few goals out that others wouldnt = matches won or drawn rather than lost and a top predator/goalscorer because is IMPOSSIBLE to win a match without putting it in the net . The rest of the players are cast members in the show.

So lets get fulop or better in , and chopra/hooper or better in

Murphy has not impressed me at all. He is not good enough to be a number 1 at a club HOPING to get in the top 6 .

It could be just speculation on carroll. Steve bruce is looking at bringing in David james as Fulop is set to leave the club. That was a bit of news on sky sports. I would prefer Fulop to Caroll. Kennedy is coming to town it also looks like Fulop is fingers crossed we can get a striker which in my opinion is the most important space to fill.
