Wickham to Miss Start of Season
Wickham to Miss Start of Season
Tuesday, 27th Jul 2010 08:59

Striker Connor Wickham injured is ankle in training yesterday and will be out for six weeks. Reports of the England U17 international suffering the knock first surfaced on the TWTD Message Board last night.

The 17-year-old is understood to have left Playford Road with a cast on his ankle and is not expected to play for the Blues until September.

Wickham’s absence leaves Town short on attacking options with Jon Stead expected to be joining Bristol City, Kevin Lisbie also likely to be on his way, Pablo Couñago out of favour and Tamás Priskin continuing to misfire in pre-season.

I said they're "capable"...if you were a half decent striker, wouldn't you fancy knocking in 15 goals in a championship/cup season of approximately 50-55 games?..I would, otherwise i'd be looking at another profession.

None of them will get anywhere near that mark if Keane keeps rotating his front 2 like he did all last season & persists with the idea that Walters is a front man.

So to answer your question,no I don't want to re-think my statement ,ta very much.

Very bad news, this will test Keane to see if he can attract a suitable replacement.

Canendish, Very sad to hear about your daughter I hope she gets well soon. Blue em away, maybe he is on this site to take his mind off it for a few minutes. As for Wickhams injury DAMN! but its not the end of the world, just a game after all. Can't see us winning any of our first 4 though, but surely we'll sign a striker, it can't be THAT hard other teams manage it.

Hucks what are you on about 'Ever since Keane has come in the team has just got weaker and weaker, in terms of numbers & ability'
NUMBERS: We had one of the biggest squads in this league last season, albeit full of dross. We need to shed a dozen or so easily and maybe bring in 4 quality players to put into the first 11, not more squad players.
Bear in mind also that Forest had one of the smallest squads but almost promoted. Difference was their 5 or 6 strikers were ALL better than ours.
ABILITY: I am struggling to recall all that ability Keane has reduced????
Rhodes would probably be the only player I wouldve hung on to and he was only potential.

Sorry keane lovers but I'm going to have to have a dig....I can't blame him for wickham going over on his ankle....but I can blame him for selling rhodes who was an upcoming young, nippy striker (the kind of thing we want now) for a ridiculous price. For other clubs this wouldn't be a problem but because wickham injured we have strikes who havnt been coached properly and so are low on confidence and form (although I do think Pablo can do a good job combined with someone who will score regularly). Other clubs can back up this problem by getting their substitutes to play because they know they can do a job....or by buying new players....but not ipswich because we have an incapable man in charge, and this is why our season is going to be just like the last, not because of injuries to wickham and delaney. and dont talk to me about optimism and being negative, I'm living in the real world.

ChambersM: I agree with you in that it was a shame we sold Rhodes. The lad was never really given the chance by Magilton that his potential showed the few times he did get a game... But it ends there. Although RK is undoubtedly ultimately responsible, you must remember he had only just joined ITFC, so his decision to let him go must have been based on advice from the existing backroom team. Now although I am NOT in the know, or have any inside information, I suspect what happened was he looked at Rhodes/Wickham together and realised he couldn't really bring both through at once… the strike force would just be too young, so he made the choice… Wickham. Recent injury apart, I think most would agree he made the right choice… probably with lots of input from the current coaches at the time.

We'd not sink low enough to feign an injury to a star player to ward off interest, would we? Haha.
I'd like to get Delfouneso in on loan as cover, unless he's injured too?

I reckon Delfouneso would be great in the Championship

We need to go out and get chopra now!!!! SC AND ME you need to listen to Keane and the fans we have to have a striker. Are current strikers are not up to it, If we start the beginning of the season with no new striker we could be in alot of trouble.

Just our luck, who is going to come in and knock the goals in against West Ham and Tottenham XI. And if we don't get anyone in then the other fixtures?
