Garvan Fee Agreed
Garvan Fee Agreed
Tuesday, 27th Jul 2010 09:29

Town and Crystal Palace have agreed a £225,000 fee for midfielder Owen Garvan. Former Blues boss George Burley is a long-time admirer of the former Irish U21 international skipper, who was amongst the eight players made available by Town earlier in the summer.

The 22-year-old has already been at Selhurst Park for talks regarding personal terms and a two-year deal has been agreed, but the Blues academy product is still considering whether to leave the club he joined as a 16-year-old.

Meanwhile, Alex Bruce could still move to Sheffield United later this week, despite the deal stalling yesterday. Reports in South Yorkshire claimed the deal was off, but the switch is still likely to go through, probably later in the week.

The clubs are yet to agree the terms on which the central defender will move to Bramall Lane, but it is likely that an agreement will be reached. Bruce is understood to have already held talks regarding his contract with the Blades.

naa: I don't think I am being harsh at all, If I had garven's obvious talent on the ball i wouldn't have wasted it! I get so frustrated when I see players that have talent, but don't put the effort in... then you have players that have a 1/3rd of the talent, who give their all week in week out, how good would some of these talented players be if they only put the effort of say Micky Stockwell into their games... The best players in the world (apart from the odd exception like that prat Ronaldo) have a mix of talent, desire and work ethic. If Garven had the work ethic and didn't mope around like a wounded puppy dog all the time, he could be a VERY good championship player and maybe even a premiership player, but with his (apparent) lacklustre apporach he will never be more than a Championship could have been.
Don't get me wrong, I wish him well in the future, but am just frustrated that someone with his ability and it's going to waste.

SiBo: fair enough I suppose. I still think you're being harsh. Even last year, when he was clearly moping about the way RK had frozen him out, he put in several decent performances and created several goals.

People see him not running around and think he isn't trying. But if you actually watch the way he plays, he's nearly always in space calling for the ball and looking around to use it. How did he get in space if he's so lazy?

People confuse blind running around with effort.

I'm not claiming Garvan couldn't put more effort in, he could, but he's nowhere near as lazy as some on here seem to think.

But anyway, this is still avoiding the issue of who is going to replace him? We really do need a replacement, not every game is won by running around a lot.

Could have been good for us, but when a player consistently under-performs for two of the three managers he's played for, it suggests there's an issue with the player. Maybe a new club will help him, for his sake I hope so. But as far as we're concerned, a reasonable price for a player with unfulfilled potential. Good luck to Burley in getting something more out of him.

Good Luck Owen, the last midfielder who can pass the ball, George is a gentleman and you'll do well at Palace I'm sure, then maybe King Keaneo will be exposed for what he is as a 'man' manager ..useless!!!

Garvan is too slow, both in the mind and across the ground, to ever play effectivly at a high level. Leadbitter is not only a more athletic player than him, but he also has as good an eye for a pass, probably even better. And he can tackle, and score goals.

@Naa, Burley better than Keano for spotting talent. Finidi George need I say any more?

WadzillaBhoy added 12:30 - Jul 27
Keano has done the right thing in my opinion, Garvan should sign because Burley will play the style of football he likes to play and he will get games. It is unfair on Garvs to keep him here were he wont get games so I wish him the best of luck at Palace and I will be watching them like my second team this season.

@pickles110564 - I'm all for opinions, but if you're implying that Finidi George did not have footballing talent, then you sir are an idiot. And if we're just going to throw around extreme examples of both managers' talent-spotting highs and lows, then I shall counter yours with 'Thomas Gaardsoe.'

Let's face it all Managers including the very top ones sign a fair share of "duds". pick any top Manager and I'll bet he hasn't signed all successes in his time. (Recent or historic) Just look at Ferguson and the players he's signed that have been dross for him. You don't see much of them, coz he works it out pretty quick, but there have been some. Look at who Chelsea have paid good money for since Ambramovich took over? Man City and Robhinio, Liverpool and 2/3rd of their signings under Benitez. It's the way the system works… a player that can look good in a specific system can then look poor when placed into a slightly different one. Not all transfers are a success.

It is a shame. I really rate Garven as a footballer. He clearly is not Keane's type of player and I can see why he will let him go. Too many occasions he goes missing, especially in the big games. He does tend to shy out of tackles which would upset Keane given his previous history!

Thats it I'm afraid - our most talented plyer sold for peanuts.
The camels back is in splinters - straw everywhere.
This is my last post. Don't call me fickle - i've been a loyal supporter for nearly 40 years but enough is enough.
i just hope that when Keane leaves, as surely he must soon, the likes of Blueknight85 & co go with him, they are not true football fans.

At this moment in time. If OG goes expect Palace to beat us 3:0 at their place on 21st Aug. Ambrose, Garvan & Lee to score

Hope Garvan stays, it's my only hope of some entertaining football this season. If he goes, good luck to him and thanks for some of the few highs of the last few seasons. Keane's ruining this club.
Pity

Good piece of business! Garvan is an appawling footballer who can't run, can't head, can't tackle, can't shoot, can't mark, never beat the first man from any set piece, had no physical strength and no positional awarness. Furthermore his direct assist can be counted on one hand! Glad hes going!

goat_man: you are an imbecile.

He gets loads of assists, mainly because he's the only one with an eye for a striker making a run.

He's scored a fair amount of goals and has a decent shot with both feet.

He has excellent positional sense, which is why he's always available for a pass.

He's not a defensive midfielder, so his tackling is weak (but then so is Paul Scholes')

His corners aren't the best (but then Leadbitter's were considerably more woeful last year) but it was noticeable that the one time Leadbitter gave up free-kick duties last year Garvan scored directly from it.

Other than that, you're completely accurate.

Sad day, best creative midfielder we had, who going to replace him? This will come back and haunt as, you watch burley get the best out of him, Palace will be palying attractive football, while we will be watching direct football again, What a give away at that price, who does keane get now a Goalkeeper, because we need one of them don't we?! more money spend on someone we don't need. these are dark times at Portman Road. Prob get abuse for saying this, hope I'm wrong, just don't think Keane is right for our club.
