Stead Set for Blackpool
Stead Set for Blackpool
Wednesday, 28th Jul 2010 17:21

Town striker Jon Stead is reported to be in talks with Premier League new boys Blackpool. Stead is believed to have turned down the chance to join Bristol City, the Blues having agreed a fee of £200,000 with the Robins.

The 27-year-old was amongst the eight players the Blues made available for transfer earlier in the summer and almost joined former loan club Coventry but that deal fell down when manager Chris Coleman was sacked.

Blackpool are short on strikers having been unable to do a deal with Leicester for ex-loanee DJ Campbell and with former Town frontman Billy Clarke ruled out for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Wickham out injured, this will leave us with Priskin and Pablo as our only strikers, unless Walters will play up front. There again it rumour has it that Walters is off for 2.5 million (rumour mill cannot decide whether it is QPR or Birmingham). Thank God I am away on holiday for the first three matches of the season, cannot bear to watch.

So (if true) keane will sell him and we will have priskin and Pablo as our starting strikers, with no sub and no imminent replacements.....looks good.

So what does Ian Holloway see that the "great" RK hasn't!

No way do I want to do down the season before it starts, but please someone explain just how we are going to do better than last year?

GeorgiDoundarov I for one rate Counago but he needs to be played the right way, Long Balls in the air not the way to go, you obviously have hope for the Keane Rebuild shame he's on borrowed time.................

Oh that has made me laugh! Stead in the Premiership? Oh that is brilliant! He hardly excelled in the Championship did he?! Good luck to him though.

Against Boro we will play Priskin up front on his jack and 5 in midfield - you can put money on that.

Stead was surplus, as were the other players who have gone or are about to. With our injuries we do need bodies through the door and with some going out - no reason for some coming in.

Stand by for the rush.... stand back I say or get trampled.....

We should hang on to Stead with the way injuries etc are going. He must be pleased though if he makes it to the prem. Good luck to him.

Preseason on a real knife edge. Can't say there's not been much to talk about.
The next week is either gonna be unbelievably good or appalingly bad. I'm falling on the optimistic side at the moment, only on the belief even the three amigos couldn't go this far without a seriously good plan about to come together. Just hope the amazing new signings about to be revealed don't turn out to be the two ugly sisters to really cap this early pantomime period. Certainly got me gripped for the next instalment.

We may as well forget the 8 Keane listed as surplus - they are history - and lets just move on - we all have our opinions/feelings but I am sure he has a cunning plan ..!!?
Like the Scotland Shout - better than DJ Campbell ( maybe we could get him and Marlon King - they may be Keane type players!)
We must have all realised though - NO ONE wants to really play for Keane from other clubs - unless you are already here / very young or ex Sunderland surplus he aint gonna attract players

He'll be a squad player at Blackpool but probably on a longer contract with the same wages as town pay at the moment. Stead is only 27 and already some what a journeyman! Get rid but we really need to hurry up and bring some new bods in. Saw an earlier comment laughing at pompy only having 15 players, all i can say is dont laugh too long, if we're not carefull we'll be in the same position!

Those of you laughing at the thought of stead in the prem should remember as a youngster his goals saved blackburn from relegation. I wish him all the best because he's a decent player and always gave it 100%...Also shame on thos that jumped the gun earlier and slagged off for turning down bristol city claiming he was "happy to sit on his contract".

Don't disagree with you but that being the case, why do those ex Sunderland players come. It kind of suggests that once you get to work under him your impression changes. Which goes completely against what we all think the players think of him.

Stead will NOT be a squad player because Blackpool have no strikers, so he will be leading for them along with whomever else they get prior to the start.

Isn't it correct that premiership teams have to declare a squad of 25 this year? Anyone know the date? There'll surely be a floodgate of players available as soon as this happens.

Stead was going. Who he goes to is kind of meaningless if it is out of the division. No one was saying he was premiership class before now.
I don't object to the list of players transfer listed and I'd add a few to it like Walters.
However, the state of our squad pre-season with all these injuries does not inspire confidence. We need to see some signings or it is going to be a grim season.

ramseyn - yes absolutely correct! The 25 man squad must be named by 1 September 2010. After that PL teams can name as many under 21 players as they like from 1 January 2011.

Agreed, there will be loads of loan deals towards the end of the transfer window. Spurs will be looking to offload Jonathan Woodgate for one.

if bristol can't afford him, why would we think blackpool can (premiership wages, not at bloomfield road).

On Stead: Frankly not good enough, let him go. If Blackpool want to add to the number of clubs he's played for, done OKish for a year then got moved on... fine. I agree he's the best of the 3 strikers we are trying to get rid of, but none of them are really good enough and Pablo will not sign for anyone else... just look at his record, Sol Campbell like in the extreme. never gone for a fee. Why Blackpool want Stead, I'm not sure, but that's their lookout not ours...

On the Premier League squad question: Yes 1st September is deadline and yes the squad is 25 strong maximum, BUT it is 25 strong including a minimum of 8 homegrown players. (Players who trained in England for a minimum of 3 years between ages of 16 and 21) If teams cannot include the minimum 8, then they loose those squad places and have to use a smaller squad. This dooesn't include anyone under 21 who can play without being registered as part of the 25, the 8 homegrown are all over 21, but trained for 3 years between 16 and 21.

Teams I know who will struggle to get the 8: Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool.

In addition their are teams with much larger squads than the 25 limit... Man City have 33 first team squad players for instance, so their will be oppertunities for loans.
