Pearce Monitoring Wickham's Progress
Pearce Monitoring Wickham's Progress

England U21s coach Stuart Pearce has confirmed that he is monitoring Town striker Connor Wickham’s progress. Pearce’s side take on Lithuania in European Championships qualifier at Colchester this afternoon.

Pearce, who was at Portman Road for the recent friendly against Spurs which Wickham missed, says the 17-year-old is amongst those he is looking at on a regular basis: “Every young England player is on my radar. Whether it is Connor or anybody else, we won’t go more than two games without watching them.

“Connor is certainly in the category of players we are watching. I saw him myself towards the back end of last season and was impressed.”

Wickham, who is close to returning from the ankle injury which has sidelined him for the season up to now, scored the winning goal as England won the European U17 Championships in Liechtenstein in May.

Still not too late to turn to Rep of Ireland Conor!
U would get in senior team much quicker and make Euro 2012 squad for sure.

Make the Euro 2012 squad for Ireland? Assuming they qualify. As it's been 22 years since they did that, I wouldnt get too excited Conor. Unless you want summers off obviously.

Slightly off topic but really pleased to see darren bent getting his chance and scoring for England tonight, I think every town fan like myself felt a little pride seeing that.

Bent did well, fair play to the lad he deserves it.

If Connor did pick to play for Ireland he would have the ideal role model of Kevin Doyle to learn from. A top centre forward, honest, hard working, very talented gives 100% in every game. The majority of Irish players are of a similiar mould and Connor would be very welcomed and fit right in.
I would be seriously worried about Connors development playing within such a dysfunctional group (Rooney, Gerrard, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole etc). I would hate to see him get involved with these guys. They could seriously damage (mentally) such a great young talent such as Connor.

Before every goes on, there are some England players I really admire. Hart, Jagielka, King, Milner, Scholes (when available). Its a pity the leaders within the squad are of a dubious/untrustworthy nature.

From an Ipswich point of view, he would be worth far more in terms of transfer value if he gets a few England caps. Unfortunately whats best for Connor may not be whats best for Ipswich I fear!
Of course if he does decide to play with England (Im sure he thats 90% certain) than I hope he does very well and develops in the right way. What is for sure is that he will be playing senior International football!
