Clegg: Keane Was Showing the Strain
Clegg: Keane Was Showing the Strain
Sunday, 9th Jan 2011 09:05

Chief executive Simon Clegg says former manager Roy Keane’s angry exchanges with fans at Monday’s 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest showed that the pressure was starting to get to the Irishman. Keane rowed and gestured towards supporters behind the dug-out and on the way back to the tunnel after the club’s seventh loss in nine games.

Clegg said: “What that pointed out to me was that the pressure was getting to him, because Roy normally doesn’t react like that. “That was him venting his frustration at the situation, not at the fans, but at the general situation he found himself in.”

The chief executive says supporters’ views are significant but that ultimately the decision to sack Keane was down to him and owner Marcus Evans: “Obviously the fans are critically important to us and I have listened to the vocal minority and the silent majority as well. Of course it was an important factor that we take into account.

“But ultimately the decision on who is employed as our manager is down to the owner and myself, and we have to make that decision in terms of what’s in the best interest of the club.”

Clegg and Evans are spending the weekend speaking to prospective new managers with Paul Jewell's name the one continuing to appear most often in newspaper speculation.

However unrealistic it is, we should be pulling out all stops to get O'Neill. A world class manager, who, with assurances on finances and given the patience that Roy Keane has recieved may see getting Ipswich to the Premier League as an attractive challenge.

Come on ME what do you lose in trying?

"PimsOclock" - Not sure why we need a "high profile". Cannot see why it benefitted us under Keane. It hardly attracted wonderful players and am not sure what other advantages it offers other than increase pressure on the manager from the media. I agree with your other points but my wish along with an attractive playing style would be less obsession with making lots of signings and a return to long term nuturing of talent within the club, with the occasional addition of judicious signings by spotting emerging talent. It is a fact the level of transfer activity (and media talk of it) generally is due to the "instant success" mentality that pervades modern football. Robson and Ramsey were given time to organise the club to utilise this, and worked largely with what they had got or produced. I'm not sure Keane paid much attention to youth development.

I'm for conspiracy theory! I understand that Roy Hodgson is a friend of Marcus Evans (???). Therefore could the timing of the 'amicable split' between Liverpool and Hodgson and Keane's sacking be significant ??????????? Looks suspicious to me.

Can't see it happening unfortunately but I'd love to see Gus Poyet brought in, possibly with Tarrico as no. 2. Inexperienced I know but he's taken to management like a duck to water, getting great results and playing attractive attacking football with hardly any money to spend at all.

That type of formula would bring the entertainment, and therefore the fans back to PR, and put a smile back on our faces.

Can't understand why Poyet hasn't been linked more, and the press seem convinced that Jewell's in the hot seat already. Surely if he was offered the position he'd take it, being a natural step up from Brighton, and I don't imagine compensation would break the bank either...

Thank you Purdis for putting Curbs Charlton record straight! As for his time at West ham I don't think anyone would succeed there under that management & Curbs was placed in an impossible position. He remains my favourite but I don't want Jewell, he can't take pressure as he showed at Wigan.

No big time charlies anymore please - Just a good honest hardworking . low profile Manager who can ;
a) Bring with him or attract a great coaching set up - we really lacked that under keane
b) Motivate players
c) Understand and know some of the lower league players and not just his own ex players and prem rejects

Should rule out Big Fat

It is very interesting reading the views of the fans! So many different opinions ... some want Jewell - some (me included) think he would be a woeful appointment. Some think Curbishley is terrible, but some (me included) thinks he would be an excellent choice!

I think the speculation is probably more exciting!!

The one thing I would say about Curbs is he has been a regular at PR over the past two seasons - so he will know the players and how they have been performing. I think he is certainly the best choice. As long as it's not Megson then we can all sleep easy!

Chris Hughton for me is my choice. First off, i take the point he had a much better squad at Newcastle which some would point to as a negative but he still had to motivate, coach and deal with the players when the club looked to be in a right mess, all the time with dignity and positivity. For me i think we need someone in the mould of Owen Coyle at Bolton, a manger who is a motivator and improves players and plays decent football but if needed gives a player a telling but then moves on not ignores them and spouts off that they'll never play for the club again.
Whoever it turns out to be though they'll get my support, Megson the exception to the rule possibly! Onwards an upwards folks!COYB!

I think nearly all football fans were gobsmacked when Chis Hughton got the bullet. All this talk about Paul Jewell is a bit worrying to me. I also think Big Sam and Hodgson are higher profile.
Chris Hughton would be a really great aquisition me thinks.

Psg he isn't speaking daily this all came from the same post sacking interview

Bluelady, I garee that most of this comes from the post sacking interview however if I recall correctly, Clegg was originally reported to have said that the opinions of the fans were not a factor. I suspect that Simon Clegg called Phil to modify that statement sowewhat. He doesn't want to p off the faithful any more!

Jewel would be a disaster. Yes, he "got Wigan up" ( 6 years ago ) but he was worse than useless at Sheffield wednsday & lost every game he managed at Derby. Surely that isnt a CV to impress a man like Evans ? bet on the sure thing. O'niell or Curbishley. men with a proven track record. They would soon show why they were worth paying the extra money. If "tight finances" ( at a multi millionaires club ? ) dictate a man who can "pull rabbits out of hats", get O' Driscoll.

Unless there was more to the Newcastle sacking that we are not aware of, I think that Chris Hughton would do a good job. He relates well to his players and with his extrensive coaching experience could get us passing the ball incisively and scoring a few goals. He's not high profile but you certianly wouldn't see him publicly slagging the players and the fans.

For me
1. Pep Guardiola
2.Alex Ferguson
3. Jose Mourihno

About as realistic as some suggestions here. As long as it's not Megson or Strachan i'll be happy.

What ever was in Keanos mind to send Townsend back ?????,( it sounds like he had a fantastic game today), Keano certainly seemed to have lost the plot under pressure (words of Clegg by the way) the new man in has certainly a lot of work to do with contracts etc.and who he wants to keep Wow!!!

I fear for whoever gets the job. The legacy that Keane has left will have repurcussions for months, if not years, to come.

Keane should never been appointed to start with . The man has NO man management skills . He destroys and damages any unity and has a temperament which is totally unsuitable for management .
Poyet and Taricco would be great - but it looks like Jewell .
