Burnley Confirm Austin Signing
Burnley Confirm Austin Signing
Friday, 28th Jan 2011 16:21

Burnley have confirmed that they have signed Town target Charlie Austin from Swindon for an undisclosed fee. The Blues agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £1.5 million yesterday but the club were unable to agree personal terms with the 21-year-old during lengthy discussions at Portman Road.

Austin has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Turf Moor, the Clarets having had an offer accepted by Swindon this morning and the former bricklayer having travelled to Lancashire for talks earlier today.

It's likely that Burnley, handed a parachute payment when they were relegated from the Premier League in May, were able to pay the former Poole Town frontman the larger salary, with the Blues keen to keep within a wage structure.

Additionally, new manager Eddie Howe knows Austin well from his time training with his former club Bournemouth prior to signing for Swindon. Howe wanted Austin to join the Cherries but was unable to complete the deal because a transfer embargo was in place at Dean Court.

Irrespective of who's fault the failure to sign Austin is - it shows that we cannot even compete with the likes of Burnley anymore in terms of signing players at the going pay rates.
So much for having 'so called moneybags' Evans and his side kick at the helm - I can't even bring myself to mention his name.
The idiots who have said forget it and move on - where to ?? - yet another negotiation failing I assume, to add to the ever lengthening list.
Before you criticise me for being 'negative' - just count up the 'potential new signing negotiation failures' by these people to date.
It's obvious Mr Clegg will next be saying we're not paying enough to watch football at Portman Road - and hike the ticket prices.
Pi--ed off - and very disappointed.
Let's get the Olympics over - and the Club in the hands of someone who really wants success for it.

Remember: Burnley are running on Premiership economics this season. We seriously don't believe we can compete with a Premiership club over wages do we? That is what the parachute payments effectively make Burnley at present. If we have a wage structure we have a wage structure. Some folk better get used to the idea that the only way to stabilse the finances and build the club into being capable of getting and staying in the Premiership is by doing it mainly through developing players - both from the academy and young prospects from the lower leagues. Quick routes to success seldom work, and in the goldfish bowl of modern football it gets harder and harder for smaller clubs to succeed long term, anyway.

Missing out on Austin is at first thought really depressing, but look at it this way. After a whole day of negotiations with us the guy then leapt into Burnley's arms without to much ado this morning. If he wanted to play for us enough a compromise would have been reached yesterday. Today was all about the money. Fair do's, but if you set this sort of precedent everyone will seek to take advantage, existing staff included.

Just goes to show that well off owners and high profile chief execs isnt always the answer. The root of the problem with Town is that the heart has been ripped from the club by people with limited knowledge of how to run a football club and i think potential signings pick up on it when they walk through the door.

Think i preferred administration, at least we knew where we were, were more succesful on the pitch and played attractive football.

Norfolktrueblue - I'm sorry mate but I think you're missing the point. It's about how much a pro can screw out of the game in his short career. No more, no less.

Your'e probably right Warwickblue - Just feel the club has lost all of the reasons i started supporting it 35 years ago. Guess i'm just not looking forward to yet another night in the local getting grief by the scum supporters, was hoping to have something to throw back at them for once, need to move i think!!

Didnt we sign Martin, who was also very much unproven at this level, for about a mil and a half, and stump up around twelve k a week for his wages ? Obv SC has learnt his lesson ,and is refusing to be held to ransome by wage demands !

The problems is that if thety allowed Austin to dictate a three year twelvek deal, then they would be bound to increase a lot of other players wages also...the wage structure is here for a reason - i would rather support a fianancially vialbe town that one in administration , as we were about seven of eight years ago !!

Burnley will still have parachute payments from the PL. We can't compete with that. I am gutted, but, the wage structure is there for a reason. If you break it then you go bust. It has to be about money, I mean, Burnley over Ipswich? Really poverty and grime everywhere in Burnley and that is in the nice areas!!!

austin just said burnley seemed like the right club for him,due to the fact they were recently in prem and their league posistion at moment and he wants to be involved in push for promotion, and that eddie howe said how ambitious they were! seems that clegg didnt sell the club and its ambition strongly enough to him or like warwickblue said it was for the cash!

Some ridiculous comments on here like 'I cant believe we cannot compete with Burnley etc etc ' ..Doesnt anyone look at the League and been watching the past 8 years .We are , at present a Championship team and will be celebrating our 10th anniversary soon
Burnley have just been up in the prem and as such have all the Financial payments still . They have a new manager who knows CA very well - that along with alot more money is the clincher
People just dont get it - if we pay 12k to an unproven kid with an attitude what do we do with the rest of our contract renogs , If some of you lot ran a company ot club you would be out of business in months
GET REAL WAKE UP .. We have a new manager , just signed our most exciting young player in years on two year deal ,got some gt youngsters - Hyam , O Connor , Smith , Brown and Murray and a good core in the team - not to mention Bullard . We have just endured the WORST MANAGER we have had and all is moving foward ..STOP MOANING !!! and move in !!!

Although agreed, I think we may have originally hesitated on the fee and then contractual fees may have put the player into perspective. On the other hand we didn't seem too bothered to break the wage bank for Jimmy Bullard! There could be a bit more to it than just Cleggs seemingly usual ignorance to good or bad (ROY KEANE) situations but we can move on and I do trust Paul Jewell to fix the team. Bullard a top signing, a shame we miss out on Austin. Adam Le Fondre, Jason Roberts maybe?

Very disappointed, first young player we have tried to get and it all goes pear shaped, yet we pay a fortune for Bullard who is 32 and injury prone, we needed a good midfielder and he may be it but I am unconvinced in the long term, however this has reminded me of all the bad stuff surrounding our club, it has been a shambles for some time and not much has changed, I wish Jewell well becuase I fear he will need it, he has the same crap that Keane left, and no goalscorer.

I have to say, how can we now trust ME when he is reported to say he wants Premier football for Ipswich, is ambitious for us etc etc?

You need to speculate to accumulate and the Premier does not come on a shoestring.

Even Blackpool had to invest money to gain promotion!

Sorry, I am adult, in fact too close to retirement for my liking, but I really am now finding it hard to show any support for the management of our beloved club. The best we can look forward to for a number of seasons to come is mid to lower Championship mediocrity ... or even possibly League 1 ignomity!

Lambert for me, sort the situation with chuck and Mcauley quickly and get shot of Leadbitter while he still has any value.

foster - WAKE UP - as if there is likely to be more success with any of these on your list.
We are building a reputation fast, of a Club who's policy is to operate with loan players only - THAT SHOW'S A TOTAL LACK OF AMBITION to anyone with a brain (including players). So who the h-ll will want to come here other than for money ?
- as there is nothing else to attract them.
As 'nice' as it sounds, all this rubbish about being a family club, etc; who players should want to play for, has long gone unfortunately.

We ain't what we were - on or off the pitch.

How is it that we can find the money for Bullard who has been nothing but an atrociously expensive disaster for Hull City, and yet we appear not to be able to take advantage of a golden opportunity in the form of Charlie Austin and offer the lad a worthwhile permanent deal ??
