Bullard Backing Jewell to Be Success at Town
Bullard Backing Jewell to Be Success at Town
Wednesday, 2nd Feb 2011 15:05

Debut goalscorer Jimmy Bullard says he’s sure manager Paul Jewell will be a success at Portman Road. Bullard, who was in Jewell’s Wigan side which won promotion to the Premier League, volleyed home the Blues’ equaliser as Town came from behind to win 2-1 at Derby last night.

The loanee from Hull said: “I’m sure Paul Jewell will do a great job at Ipswich. He’s one of the best managers I have played for and it makes such a difference to play for someone you respect.

“We enjoyed success at Wigan together and I am looking to do the same during my time at Ipswich.”

Bullard says he had an age to consider his options before lashing in his 30-yard strike: “I had so much time and didn’t know whether to control the ball, hit it with my left or right foot or head it, and I didn’t want to miss it altogether. There was a player in my way so I didn’t know it was a goal until I saw the net ripple.”

The 32-year-old says he was fine after the game: “I got through 90 minutes, which is good, and I should be fit for Saturday’s game.”

If the numbers quoted are correct then well worth the risk. Only 1 game in but...

Given it was his first 90 mins for a while thought he was outstanding last night (as was Norris). Energetic, cleverly linking & reading play, character in abundance. An real asset going forward & in defending. Immense. Did get caught in possession a couple of times but quickly adusted to pace of game & then imposed himself & started controlling tempo & patterns of play. Thought the whole central midfield unit worked well and think they will learn from each other.
Looking at the 1st goal celebration (Jimmy B was mobbed by his team mates for what seemed the longest group hug I can remember) he has clearly made an immediate impact both on & off the pitch, so can only see this group of players becoming a closer unit. Also, already built rapport with the travelling Town fans & was great to see the teams genuine appreciation at the final whistle. Staff & management all came over & gave a prolonged thank you.

Also real comedy value with the opposing fans who are bound to give him their own welcome... just hope some of the thugs in this league don't go out of their way to nobble him.

Wonder if he will re enact the streaker episode in traning?

Feels proud again to be Blue

I wish half of you lot would log in on the sly at work. We are going round in circles here.

Get behind the team everyone, who cares now, we one!! Two matches back to back! we will be in the warm duvet of midtable mediocrity by Saturday at 5pm. Then we can get all excited about the loan deals PJ and Duncan have set up!!

Anyone want to take a punt on who they think will come in?

I know its in quotation marks, but do you think Jimmy actually said this stuff, or was it just the Communications Manager reeling off what he thought we wanted to hear? I suspect the latter, and frankly, I feel rather cheated at the blather the club puts out and pretends it came from the players..

I am with Blue Lady on this.

Consider this, is Jimmy Bullard costing Town any more than any other of our signings in recent years? We are paying a loan fee to Hull for one of their £5 million assets. £320,000 divided by 20 (the number of games he is here for) this works out at £16k per match.

As a comparison lets now speculate on the Austin deal that failed. £1.5 million + 3.5 year contract (this season + 3 others) at £6k per week (probably more but again somebody quoted that on this site £6k. The maths in this scenario would show a total cost of £ 2.6 m (£1.5 m + £6 * 182 weeks)

I calculate approx 160 games over this period. That also works out at £16k per match. Now we don't know the actual deal on offer for Austin but how would a Norris, Priskin or Martin compare with the scenario. Not much different I suspect.

In fact I am all in favour of renewing the contract for David Norris with a healthy sign here bonus as I believe his cost per match will in fact go down based on not having to fork out a large transfer fee to replace his experience.

The team needed class, the fans want to see class, Mr Bullard has class. Money well spent in the grand scheme of things.

There is a lot of cheep talk going around, what else would Jimmy Bullard say about the loan club that is subsidising his wages? What else would Paul Jewel say after a fortunate way win? Well done to everyone, but let's do it on the pitch. I'm sure the supporters can do without this drivel.

would you take a pay cut of 66%, get real!

rosseden added 17:53 - Feb 2
I think if we offered a fee of c £1.5 / 2m which would essentially buy JB out of his contract at Hull with minimal outlay from them and bring him here on our pay structure, i think theres a good chance youll see him here permanently if he does well.

Some of you moaners drive me crazy!? I don't get it.. We win 2 games on the trott and a debutant scores a tattific goal whilst our captain links up extremely well with Priskin to score the winner!!

You're throwing a wobbly because of what we're "alledgidly" paying Bullard.. In my eyes he's a £4miilion+ player in £45K a week.. And we're paying what.. 43% of his wages. Bargain!

Tractor Roy this post and your previous one about bullard not being a premiership quality player highlights your poor knowledge of the game, maybe do some research next time. Bullard has been struck with injury but when fit and on form is a top top player, if as he claims he is back to feeling anywhere near like his old self we may well have found a gem. Not only that its his addition off pitch, his experience and bubbly confidence etc that gives us the added on value. Where you there to see him score tues cause if you were you'd know how much it meant to him and his new team mates....

I gave up on watching Town when Magilton got the job, but this latest two weeks has made me want to come back. Will be there on Saturday and I wonder how many others will be like me?
p.s. I started watching in 1958.

Sadly you are confirming the gray-keys stereotype.
Premiership clubs are always on the look out for quality players, Liverpool have just paid £35m for one who is not currently fit.
Bullard is a decent player, but he is currently not a premiership player, if i am so wrong, then ask yourself why didn't someone like Blackpool, West Ham, Wolves or WBA take a punt on him?

Ridiculous post TractorRoy. Latent sexism if not outright sexism. When did this become about gender? When your judgement was questioned?

The shame is that your point is not a bad one, just lost next to your ill-advised observation re: former SS presenters.

Addressing your point, though, i imagine Hull were hopeful of a prem club coming for JB (Wigan must have been at least slightly interested) hence our not getting him 'til the least few days of the window when it was obvious the prem clubs wouldn't take a chance on him.

Tractor Roy I will respond to the football part of your note and ignore your ignorant suggestion. I only hope that this guy gets his form back and his career on track for his own sake as much as ours, characters like him are few and far between. He gets fit and you watch the premiership teams come sniffing around in the summer. I was there Tues and he added something to our team that has been sadly missing so long, quality and a genuine desire.

After reading your comments and blueladys comments on different storys. I believe she is by far more clued up on football, life and buisness than you will ever be.
But i think sky made a mountain out of a mole hill with that story, i mean who is suffering. The two wealthy near retirement blokes or the lady lino that is so far under the spot light that she isnt allowed to officiate any games.

Agree Bluelady!

Incredible isn't it? - people on here moaning about the need to get in some quality, and when we do, moaning about wages, who's paying what, and if its fair on the others....

Tractoroy - when was the last time you saw one of our players score a 30yrd volley? You probably still haven't...
