Town Linked With Blades Striker
Town Linked With Blades Striker
Thursday, 5th May 2011 22:45

Town are targeting Sheffield United’s striker Ched Evans, according to reports in South Yorkshire. Blues boss Paul Jewell is understood to be a long-time admirer of the 6ft tall frontman, who was previously chased by former manager Roy Keane prior to his £3 million July 2009 move to the recently relegated Blades.

As a schoolboy, Evans, 22, was with Chester City but moved on to Manchester City in 2002 when the Deva Stadium club's youth set-up closed.

The St Asaph-born striker made his senior debut for Manchester City in September 2007 in a Carling Cup tie against Norwich City, who he joined on loan in the following November with his opportunities at Eastlands having been limited to five starts and 15 sub appearances which yielded one goal.

In six months at Carrow Road, the Welshman made 20 starts and eight games from the bench, scoring 10 goals, one of those against the Blues in a 2-1 Town win at Portman Road.

For Wales, he has won 13 caps at full level, scoring two goals, having netted nine in nine for the U21s and one in four for the U19s.

Evans, who has one year remaining on his £15,000-a-week Blades contract, had a difficult first season at Bramall Lane, scoring only four games in 23 starts and 13 matches as a substitute.

Despite Sheffield United’s poor season, Evans has enjoyed a better campaign this time around, scoring nine times in 27 starts and eight sub appearances. Even so, he is likely to be available for a fee significantly lower than the one the Blades paid for him.

Tony Mowbray and Middlesbrough are also believed to be eyeing the situation, while Evans’s previous loan at Norwich has led to speculation that the Canaries might also be interested.

would rather a 22 year old like Evans than a 33 year old like roberts, atleast there is time for him to improve. i think he would be great to have on the bench and let him get better. under £1mil is a bargain imo... sign him up! COYB

Jason Scotlands goal-scoring record is better! Having said that a decent player who may flourish with a new challenge? Clearly he hasn't been prolific at Sheffield, but look at Grant Holt - achieved very little until he went to Norwich!

Really don't think he is needed... So many reasons we don't want him 1. He is on 15,000 a week 2. It would have to be a fee of around 1 mil, again better used on someone else 3. Jason Scotland has scored more goals than him this season 4. I don't think he would have the hunger jewell is looking for, he is on a big wage and I don't think he really minds not scoring that much.......

I'm really surprised by the negative comments about this guy. I remember while he was at Man City (and on loan to Norwich) he was widely regarded as a highly promising prospect and there was a lot of people on this site who were clamouring for him to be signed up once it became clear he was prepared to step down into the Championship.

This is a striker who has started only just over half this seasons' matches for a very poor team and yet still scored 9 goals. Average that out over the season and allowing for the fact we create far more than the Scum OTN then I really think he could do a very good job for us. He's also 22 so will have resale value at the very least.

That said, it should depend on price: if we could get him for £1.5m or less I think that would be a good deal for us.

do believe we need big strong target man like a Grant Holt, or Shefki Kuqi or Rickie Lambert type we would be so much more of a force the ball actually sticking upfront instead of Scotland just being pushed off it. Personally would love to see Lambert and Nicky Maynard

I personally think he'd be a good signing for a reasonable fee £1m ish. those saying Nugent is far better should look at how he does against teams other than Ipswich. While he always scores against us he doesn't really score that many against other teams.

He has scored 13 this year in a Portsmouth team better than the Sheff team Evans is in.

I rate Nugent, but those who think he'll be our 20 goal man are hoping rather than basing it on any evidence.

Let's also not forget that Evans is still only 22, plenty of time for improvement too.

I was not so keen on him when he was first linked to us. He will not be our 20+ striker for sure! But looking at players from Sheffield Utd is not a bad idea - they have some good players and I'd say they were unlucky to be relegated (although I am happy to see a potential play-off contender for the next season off the table). So Darius Henderson would be a bettr choise for me but he is not a 20+ scorer too...

he is younfg but i dont feel he is capable of scoring 20+ goals in a season. i dont think he and wickham would be the best partnership anyway. either graham or sharp (if not injured) would be the best.

i think ched evans is worth a shot if you get him aswell as another striker like sharp mackail smith or goodwillie nugent wont eva come here even if we offer him stupid money like many fans im cautious bout this linking id rather see the headline ipswich town sign ........... not ipswich town linked with.............

Hasn't progressed that well since joining Sheff utd..think there are far better options we could go for.

judging by sheffields position in the league and the amount of goals they have scored this season i dont think anybody should be going for there strikers!

Brilliant player! And hes only 22! With a quick and slick player like goodbillie or sharp or mackail smith playing off of him we have 30+ goals between the 2!

I've seen a bit of Sheff Utd this season, and as mentioned earlier, he's hated. He is lazy and lightweight and definitely not what we need. Plus he's injury prone.

those of u criticising him, have u thought it may b sheff utds style of play may b the reason he stuggling? at man city & norwich he did well, then joions sheff, sruggles. b sharp doing well, joins sheff, sruggles, then goes 2 donny, bck on form. so, if he shld sign 4 us give the guy a chance instead of writing him off as no good.

Wouldn't be bad, if we did sign him along with sharp he would have to be on our bench though, wouldn't be a bad signing however. Especially as he was an old scummer

Wasn't keen on him clutching his face trying to get Tom Eastman sent off at the end of last season.

More speculation. Think there are less players left now that we havn,t actually been linked with.
