Chopra Fee Set to Go to Sunderland
Chopra Fee Set to Go to Sunderland
Friday, 10th Jun 2011 09:43

The £1.5 million the Blues look set to pay Cardiff for striker Michael Chopra appears likely to go to his former club Sunderland with the Bluebirds still owing the Black Cats part of the fee they agreed when the 27-year-old returned to Wales in July 2009. As reported last night, Chopra is due to continue talks at Portman Road and looks likely to sign on the dotted line at some point today.

Last summer, Cardiff renegotiated a payment which was due to the Wearsiders at a time when former Town boss Roy Keane was hoping to sign the 27-year-old frontman.

The Bluebirds are understood to still owe Sunderland £1.5 million for Chopra, who cost them a fee variously reported as £3 million or £4 million.

Elsewhere, Leicester are reportedly the favourites to sign Portsmouth striker David Nugent, who was linked with the Blues earlier in the summer. The one-time England frontman is out of contract.

Cardiff really did gamble last season and for all the stick that ME and Clegg get at least we are being run on something approaching a better financial footing than others, at least in the world of football business terms. Mind you i think that Ridsdale was there for a while and he seems to never learn.

if their in such financial trouble why dont we try n poach whittingham with chops?? their getting nothing for chopra so maybe another fee of 1.5mill for whittingham? great creative midfielder can play middle or wide left & right n can actually TAKE set pieces unlike leadbitters first man policy

Interesting shout. Would think form wise Whittingham would command closer to 2.5 but I think he's probably worth it - would definitely solve our lack of decent delivieries into the box

...so Sunderland will be able to increase their offer for young Mr. Wickham.

Risdale hasn't been chairman of Cardiff for a while now. He is saving Plymouth from going out of business. He had no part in the whole Craig Bellamy affair. This is down to the new owners who have put money in to get promoted.

But what do I care, there not my club

@Yun

Not really, in a way they would be saving 1.5 million, as we would be effectively paying Sunderland through Cardiff

If the 1.5 million for Chops doesn't go to our Championship rivals so much the better, happy days!
