Ellington Confirms Town Move
Ellington Confirms Town Move
Tuesday, 21st Jun 2011 10:21

Nathan Ellington has confirmed that he is joining Town today, subject to a medical. TWTD reported earlier that the former Watford and Wigan man was back at the club this morning having previously been at Portman Road for talks last Monday.

Ellington tweeted: “I’m signing for Ipswich today, subject to medical. Should be an Ipswich player by end [after]noon!”

The 29-year-old, who played for Paul Jewell at Wigan, finished last season on loan at Preston, where he scored two goals in seven starts and 11 sub appearances.

The relegated Lilywhites were understood to be keen to sign him on a permanent basis after his release by Watford at the end of the season, however, the Bradford-born frontman ruled out a return to the Lancastrians in a tweet over the weekend: “Won't be going back to Deepdale, I'm afraid. Things were bit complicated for the club which meant it couldn't happen.”

The 5ft 10in tall striker started his career with Walton and Hersham before moving on to Bristol Rovers. Jewell took him to Wigan for £1.2 million in March 2002 where he scored 67 goals in 139 starts and seven sub appearances largely playing alongside Jason Roberts, before moving on to West Brom for £3 million fee in August 2005.

Since signing for Watford for £3.25 million in August 2007, the Bradford-born striker has spent time on loan at Derby County, during Jewell’s spell there as manager, and in Greece with Skoda Xanthi.

Ellington is set to be unveiled at a press conference this afternoon.

Good signing on a free ! I welcome the duke....

I think both Priskin, Wichham and Scotland are off in the next few weeks. I think we will sign on more striker after these have departed....

Not over the moon with this one but PJ got the best out of him at wigan, let's hope he can do the same here.

Surely this means Wickham is going nowhere?..if we were going to cash in on Connor then surely we wouldn't be signing a freebie who hasn't done much over the last few seasons?

Hope he turns out to be an inspired signing, but his record over the past 5 or 6 years would suggest not. Lisbie MKII

Good to see Paul getting his own team in now, I'm thinking this wont be the end of the transfers in.

Coppinger - in
Marney - in
Kirkland - in
Striker - in

Wickham - out
Fulop - out
Scotland - out

don't see why we need Two keepers though like it was said in a previous post, i think Lee Barrett is plently good enough as a number two.

Pleased with this, maybe he's not the goalscorer he was but what strikes me about the youtube video posted a few days back was his strength and ability to keep the ball with his back to goal. Very much like a Mark Hughes.

Something we have utterly lacked as it has tended to ping back off our frontmen.

Know nothing about Cresswell at all.

another has been no better than we have at present, still he came for nothing which saved him from the scrap heap. Could play along side scotland and see if we can set a new club record of how many games we can play without scoring.

Not over excited by this news but refuse to write anybody off until I see him play. Does this signal the end of interest in Bogdanovic?

tractorboybig: what a delightfully positive post. Geez! Since when is 29 a has-been? Oh, I know. Never.

his record last few years has been poor, so I will reserve judgement until I've actually seen him play a few games.

But if he can hold the ball up and bring Chopra into play then I'm not too worried if he doesn't score loads (let's face it, most people here have looked up how many goals he's scored and made a judgement from that).

Found Ellington on Twitter. Can someone provide a link to Chopra's account? I know he's on there from this:

this is what is a known as a disgraceful signing for the football club, have no faith in this signing whatsoever, are we going to change our name from sunderland rejects to wigan fc 2005???

look wait till he plays wickham/chopra main pair then priskin/ellington Carson is CAM Now all we need is some new defense to help Ingimarssion preferably some young ones or a defender we will have for more than 1 year. We got some young defense but they need help so get 2 or 3 good defenders then i be happy then we sort rest of team out

Welcome Nathan, sure you will enjoy your time at PR. I think this could prove to be a a very astute signing, on a free, knows Jewell well, has a point to prove with regards to recent seasons, think he will thrive. Well done to PJ & dare I say it to SC aswell!!

Finidi: 1 ex Wigan player from their 2005 season and you slag ITFC off with the "Sunderland rejects" jibe. Anyway Wigan 2005 were quite successful, which is more than you can for Sunderland Rejects!! Think about it a little more before you post.

Good signing. He is still the right side of Thirty and given the right service and the right coaching he can become deadly in this league. If we hang on to Wickham for the season and also have Chops and the Duke then im sure we can bang the goals in. All we need now is a decent midfield.

A bad signing. Well past it but Jewell is looking to give his mate a last payday. Our "friends" up the road sign up and coming hungry players and what do we get? We get Chopra who we beat off competition from absolutely no other club to sign and now this old bugger?? Chopra will spend half the season either injured or in therapy and Ellington is just over the hill. Better keep the donkeys Scotland and Priskin as Wickham will be off soon by the sound of it.....

Probably still has a couple of good years in him. PJ must know exactly what he's getting, too.

A warm welcome to Portman Road 'Duke'.
We have had to endure about 6 or 7 years with a selection of gutless strikers (obviously with a few exceptions like Connor Wickham) and now we have two proper strikers in Chopra & Ellington.
I think NE and PJ both have something to prove, and know eachother well, so this could work very well.
I know some people will disagree but I can't help feeling sorry for Jason Scotland though. No way was he ever going to be a good target man for Hoofball. He was constantly played in this position, with fans turning against him. Can't have done his confidence much good. And he still managed to get 10 or so goals.
I hope it works out better for Nathan Ellington.
I think PJ was just holding the fort last season, making his plans, and stopping us from going down. This summer will show him making this 'his' team. The striker situation will be very interesting, to see who goes, and what the mix will be. COYB!!!!!

Whoppit -

you should change your name to muppet.
Post positve things on here please, Your probably one of the people complaining that we had no signings and slagging Clegg off for not signing Chopra last year.
We now make good solid signings and your moaning.

Get a life -

Muhren added 12:40 - Jun 21
Good signing. Both Ellington and Chopra could compliment Wickham with their different style of plays. Ellington hasn't found the net regulary since leaving Jewell, lets hope he picks that up again.

Things are looking good.
