Blades Keen to Keep Hold of Lowton
Blades Keen to Keep Hold of Lowton
Wednesday, 6th Jul 2011 14:59

Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson says he is keen to keep hold of 22-year-old defender Matt Lowton, who is understood to be a target of Town and Blackpool. Earlier today, reports claimed the Blades had put a £4 million price tag on the Chesterfield-born youngster.

Wilson said: “He did fantastic here last season and we are trying to tie all our younger lads down and keep them here longer.

“We have not had any approaches for Matt and, at the same time, we would not encourage them anyway.

“He is one of the young lads who have done very well since breaking into the team and I want him to keep progressing with us.”

Wilson is a fan of Lowton’s versatility: “Matt can play numerous roles but he seems to be excelling in the right-back position at the moment.

“We want him to enjoy that role but if we are struggling for cover as the season goes on in other positions then I’m sure he will be happy to fill in.

“It is going to be Matt’s first full season and we just want him to keep progressing and getting better with us.”

Elsewhere, sources said to be close to released Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker are reported to have played down last night’s reports that the former England U21 international skipper had spoken to Town.

Wonder who was 'Tuesday's signing' ? Hope he has not gone elsewhere. I read that Reo-Coker was on £50K p.w. at Villa, so difficult to think that we could agree terms with him. Still, he has not got fixed up yet, so .... And £4Mn for Matt Lowton. No chance any club outside of the Premiership would even think about paying that. Fingers crossed we will see two new faces this week.

Can't say I have heard of him, 4mill sounds steep. Also im more worried about the midfield than the defence at the mo.

i agree that 4m is high but if we're building for the future then this is the type of player we shold be looking at. in two years time he could be heading for a Premiership team at twice the price!

Calm down bluearmy.

He said he had one for Tuesday (yesterday) and hoped 2 would sign by the end of the week. I am not knocking him as so far business has been good. I just get excited and then nothing arrives. I am sure we will have a signing this week but I am I'm afraid very impatient at this time of year !! Must be the lack of games to look forward to

The names that have been highlighted this week are Bowyer, Bullard and Reo-Coker. Seems that the main source was the Mirror/People and doesn't appear to be getting much traction in the other national and international press.
Best case is that we making progress on a confidential basis.

God I'll be glad when the transfer market is closed, we know who we've got and all this stupid tabloid speculation has gone away. I hate it when there's no football :-(

Can't see many Championship teams parting with £4m. We should make an offer for half that amount just to test the water, but I reckon Sheff U probably won't budge.

At 22, the guy is almost certainly only going to appreciate in value anyway, and will probably play a key role in the blades bid to escape L1 next season.

4 million, steep, it ruddy vertical, who would pay that sort of money for a young player still unproven who had not completed a full season - of course that would be Sunderland

Folks , i know how frustrating it is but we have to be patient and show faith in PJ.
Personally i hope we manage to sweet talk bullard in to coming at least and another center mid , RB and a center back. Ideally also another CF cos lets face it Scotland and going to cut it.
Only 1 month till KO so come on PJ its time for action.
