Jewell Waiting to Hear Back on Two Bids
Jewell Waiting to Hear Back on Two Bids
Monday, 11th Jul 2011 12:25

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues are waiting to hear back regarding bids for what would be the club’s sixth and seventh signings of the summer. The Town manager says he has targeted a striker and a wide midfielder with another central defender also on his wish list.

Jewell said: "We have a bid in for a striker and a wide player and we will see what develops from there. We're also after another centre-half to provide competition to Damien, Tommy Smith and Ívar. There are other areas we are looking at as well.

"It will be a long, hard season ahead and we are trying to put together a squad that will be competitive in the Championship. We're obviously delighted with the players we have brought in but we've got a way to go yet.

"Deals take time and we will use right up to the end of the transfer window if need be to get the players in that we feel can take this club forward."

A big frontman to augment recent signings Michael Chopra and Nathan Ellington and existing strikers Tamás Priskin and Jason Scotland — if they don’t move on before the start of the season — would appear to be the most likely target.

The Blues have been linked with Sheffield United’s Ched Evans on a number of occasions, while QPR’s Rob Hulse, who played for Jewell at Derby, could be in the Blues boss’s thoughts. Jason Roberts, who partnered Ellington in Jewell’s Wigan side, appears committed to staying at Blackburn, despite Town interest earlier in the summer.

The Blues boss previously played down suggestions that he might make another move for Billy Sharp, the subject of a £2.3 million offer earlier in the summer.

As for the wide player, the Town manager has previously said that he hasn't given up on adding Doncaster's James Coppinger to his squad, despite having an initial £300,000 offer turned down earlier in the summer.

There have been contradictory reports in the South Yorkshire press as to whether a second £400,000 bid was also rebuffed by Rovers, but it appears likely that the Blues have continued their pursuit of the 30-year-old, who played alongside Town coach Sean McCarthy at Exeter earlier in his career.

Preston's Irish international left winger Keith Treacy was also strongly linked with Town earlier in the summer with the relegated Lilywhites unlikely to be able to keep hold of the 22-year-old.

At the back, the Blues missed out on Preston’s Sean St Ledger, who has joined Leicester, and AFC Bournemouth’s Jason Pearce, who moved on to Portsmouth, and few other potential central defensive signings have been mooted in recent weeks.

Town would also appear to need cover at right-back and still look short on numbers in central midfield despite the acquisition of Lee Bowyer.

I'm really interested as to who the players maybe and I really hope we get them. I maybe wrong but I cannot see it being Sharp as he is too similar to Chopra in style and not the big hold-up striker I think we will be after.
I think PJ will be able to sell the club and its ambitions to potential signees, I just hope the selling clubs and the players themselves are willing to be sensible regarding fee and wages, but I get the feeling we would have made tentative enquiries about this before making bids as we would not want to waste our time.
I'm looking forward to season now!!!

Why does pj have to say they have put 2 bids in,I thought that they like to do their business quietly, obviously these bids will get turned down and we will end up with another has been! Everyone get real, just because we sold wickham for good money don't mean they will spend the cash like leicester are.the only way the likes of sharpe, maynard, treacy would come if they spend large amounts of cash, let's all be realistic it aint gonna happen!!

Have a gut feeling it's treacy, I think sharpe is letting the attention go to his head and don't really know enough about Evans. Personally i would like it to be treacy and koumas with a striker to follow.

I hope its Treacy and Matt Derbyshire, he would be a quality pairing with Chopra. Like most think we need another CM, CB and a RB but trust PJ to deliver!

Tracey would be a quality signing, he impressed me greatly in what was a poor Presotn team, has a left foot that could open a tin of beans. Coppinger in comparison just doesn't seem like someone to make a song and dance about.

As for a striker, would like to see a proven championship goalscorer to come in, as surely Jewell was waiting until the Wickham money came in before splashing out on someone big, after the relatively low amount for Chopra and Ellington on a free. However this could be escapes me at the moment though, so I hope to be pleasantly surprised when someone i had completely overlooked is announced!

Treacy and Hulse would be decent IMO, not sure about Sharp as we need height in the team! Also as people have said a right back is a necessity, aswell as a younger centre back.

Id be looking at Bothroyd, he's on a free and still available and formed a great partnership with Chopra at Cardiff, if not him then Shane Long, only Danny Graham was better than him in this division last year, lets really go for it and splash the Wickham cash

Just one thing to remember at this ungodly hour and that is the headline, WAITING FOR NEWS ON BIDS. Sorry to be the damp squib but even accepted offers don't mean signatures on dotted lines, much prefer to here that medicals are taking place.
