Jewell: We Created Nothing at Colchester Wednesday, 27th Jul 2011 10:17
Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side didn’t create any opportunities during Tuesday’s abandoned scoreless game at Colchester but says his new look team has carved out chances during their other pre-season matches. The Town manager believes that with seven new signings and more to follow, it will take time for his side to get to their best.
Jewell said: “We didn’t create any chances against Colchester, to be honest, but in the previous games - first half against Southend, Cambridge — overall we’ve created lots of opportunities.
“I’ve said to the players, pre-season can be a bit of a pain in the backside because there’s nothing on the games.
“I’ve played and managed teams that have set the world alight in pre-season and then had a poor season and vice versa. One or two lads have done OK, but in the main I think we will get better.”
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and David Stockdale came into last night’s team having joined the squad earlier in the day and having been involved in what Jewell says was a testing session at Playford Road: “It’s going to take time for the players and we had two players in [on Tuesday] morning who trained with us for the first time.
“We were taking the game seriously, but we had quite a hard morning training session and it’s mainly about fitness levels and trying to gel the new players in as quickly as possible.”
Jewell confirmed that Fulham have included a 24-hour recall clause in keeper Stockdale’s loan deal.

Stockdale and JET only trained with the team for the first time yesterday morning, surely we weren't expecting miracles?? Chopra looked very sharp despite not getting any opportunities and JET looks a handful; made a decent run through the centre of midfield, taking on four or five players, which although didn't come to anything, will give him plenty of confidence. Stockdale looked very good, excellent save from a headed corner; premiership quality!

i personally wasnt there last night but its going to take time for 6/7 new players to get too know players already at club and get to know style of play. im not looking for miracles this season, just some progress from last year would be nice. im pleased with the new recruits so far and look forward to more to come and it does look promising for the future. im looking forward to wolves game as they will bring a strong squad with them and it will really test us and maybe give us a picture of how we will get on against the likes of west ham, brum etc and gives us an idea of where we could potentially end up by end of may 2012

i feel we need to add a creative central mid player to are squad as i think bowyer will add strengh and will get stuck in but i think leadbitter brings nothing to the team he has no creativity all he does is pass backwards adding nothing to the team so feel we need now to bring someone like bullard someone with creativity and a CB

ryan you are spot on grant is pants to be fair, and needs replacing quick smart if paul wants to build a competative team for to amny years we have lacked a decent creative midfielder, as these players unlock defences with killer passes, if it wasnt for bullard i dare say we would have been at col u last night as a leaque game. but it does take time

We need a playmaker to replace Bullard. And a defender to two as Ingy won't be able to play all season.

i was a leadbitter fan when he first arrived, but now a midfield playmaker is needed to replace grant. a new centre back also needed to provide cover.

Doesn't bode well. I agree some of the changes have been forced, there are simply too many now, just what Jewell did at Derby and Roy Keane's first full season in charge here!

'Jewell: We Created Nothing at Colchester' - Apart from large queues
London_Blue added 12:12 - Jul 27
I was with the Colchester board last night and I can tell you they weren't happy with the queuing situation. The Vice-Chairman was calling for the cashiers to stand on the stadium corners where the largest entrances were and just take tenners off people as they came through the gate. Too little, too late unfortunately.

Still need many players if we are to be taken seriously, while we have struggled pre-season, teams like hull are beating premier league teams. Jewel has a momentous task on his hands next season.

You did create something last night at Colchester. A heightened sense of anxiety about next season. And yet more doubt about the adequacy of the regime in charge at PR.

Creativity = goalmouth incident = entertainment = more fans = greater revenue = better players = future success = promotion. Three years without creativity has cost the club some of it's fan base, which may never return. Pyjama man has his work cot out!

Agree Tiggs...I will say that although the quality of our football was pretty poor on the eye under Keane, you can't argue that we didn't create chances, look at the stats...we need creativity in the middle of the park it's obvious, but these players don't come cheap and are chased when they're available...

i cant believe that people are reading anything in to pre-season results, they mean nothing. Its been said by many sensible posters on here the team need time to gel, with 3 players still needed, imho. its gonna take a while. i just cant see why some of you expect miracles instantly. JET is some signing, cant wait to see him in a settled team. ..... COYB

I did'nt get to the game so can't comment on last nights performance but for those of you already criticising the team and predicting gloom this season ask yourself this - do we have a better team to start this season than we finished last? I believe we do - Chops, Bowyer, Stockdale, Cresswell, JET, Ings are all great additions to add to a full season of Carson AND of PJ in charge. I also agree we need a creative midfielder and 2 more defenders and believe PJ will deliver on this (but the money has to be right) Overall I am optimistic about this season bring on Bristol

yes we may hav made signings but leadbitter lacks creactivity, pace determination lacks everything and cant take corners the only thing he can do well is pass backwards and score the ocassional penalty.im not going pre season i believed last season and even the season before that leadbitter is average and creates nothing so we need to try to replace him.

Totally agree Ryan brilliant examination of leadbitter--- shocking!

PJ - right guys we have a new way of picking the team..............we put 35 numbers in a hat and the first 16 out will be the squad for the first game of the season - ok?
