Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Tuesday, 9th Aug 2011 23:01

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed to see his side crash out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage as Northampton left Portman Road with a 2-1 victory. The Town manager was unhappy that his much-changed team failed to deliver and hopes to add to his squad before the end of the week.

Jewell said: “I’m obviously disappointed to lose the game. We obviously made a lot of changes and we were stretched across the back with Ívar Ingimarsson getting injured in training yesterday.

“We’re very disappointed that we didn’t get through. I guess that if Michael Chopra was playing tonight I think we would have had a couple of goals as there were plenty of balls flashing across the box, but it just shows that we our squad isn’t as strong in depth as we’d like it to be.”

The Town boss dismissed suggestions that nine changes to the side which won at Bristol City was too many: “I think that the team we had out there was well good enough to get a result today on paper but having said that I have to give credit to Northampton, I thought they were excellent.

“We had plenty of opportunities to get a second goal. I don’t think we had chance after chance but we had situation after situation where the ball’s flashed across the box or we’ve got a two-v-one situation and we don’t make the most of it.

“We’re not clinical enough in either box, I must have said that 20 times last year. The lads up front are decent players but there were decent balls going across the box and I want them to get two or three goals and give me a problem.

“It’s not just the front players, by the way, the whole Ipswich thing — we’re nice. We win one game, lose one, draw one, win one. I wanted to give them an opportunity tonight to show what they can do in front of 9,000, a great crowd again, and we haven’t done ourselves justice.”

There were a few players who impressed their manager: “I thought Jack Ainsley did OK, better than OK.

“I thought JET did OK, I thought he showed he’s going to be a threat, although he’s not 100% fit, but you can see he’s a talent.

“I thought Cressy did well. But too many players didn’t come up to the mark today and it’s a pity for them and a pity for us because we got beaten.”

Ingimarsson has a recurrence of the thigh strain he suffered with in pre-season and is a doubt for the weekend.

Jewell says the deal to sign Blackburn’s Keith Andrews isn’t yet done, contrary to reports elsewhere but confirmed that as reported by TWTD this afternoon the Irishman is at the club: “Keith Andrews is here and we’re speaking to him and we’re trying to get a deal together so he’ll become our player, but it’s not done yet.

“That would be a loan until the end of the season. That’s not a done deal, we’re trying to do it and if things go well over the next 24 hours, hopefully, he’ll be ours."

The Blues boss also has his sights on a central defender with an offer having been tabled but Town aren't the only club targeting him: “I think there are about four clubs, including a couple of Premier League clubs in for him as well, so that’s where we are.”

The Blues boss refused to confirm or deny whether that player is Liverpool’s Daniel Ayala: “I’m not going to comment on speculation.”

Northampton boss Gary Johnson was delighted with his side’s victory, which he felt was deserved: “I love coming here. We won here with Yeovil a few years ago. It’s a great result for us early doors. I don’t think too many people gave us too much of a chance.

“But we had faith in our philosophy and I don’t think anyone can complain about the way we played. We tried to play some football, some really good combination football like Ipswich play and we were very proud to have mixed it with a good football team by playing football."

Chopra, Edwards, Kennedy etc not being on the bench showed how little jewell wanted this cup run..... I think he feels we have a good chance in the league and is throwing focus on that, is he right I guess time will tell, but I for one am disappointes having been there today....

Looks like it's time for Priskin's chance up front with Chopra - all he needs to do is score for Hungary against Iceland tomorrow and it's a guaranteed Chopra Priskin partnership - and that's what all Town fans are screaming out for!

Utter rubbish what the hell was pj doing playing that c..p team.As i said last night i knew we would get beat jewell said yesterday he wanted more nights like last season. No chance changing the team like that just because it was Northampton. In pj we trust he just lost a lot of trust in my eyes HE HAS DONE THE SAME AS ROY KEANE DONE CHANGE THE TEAM.Keep the same team let them play together week in week out.Cant wait for the f.a cup he will play the under 18,s..NOT HAPPY I SAW THAT COMING A MILE OFF.....

Not really bothered about the result, but like PJ said we really dont have enough strength in depth, which is worrying because atm we only have one fit centre half- with both Delaney and Ivar injured, we must (!) get another one in before the weekend.

Tonight showed that 4-4-2 does not work (second half). 4-2-3-1 is the answer
stockdale
Edwards Ingi ? Cresswell
Andrews Leadbitter
JET Bowyer. Martin
Chopra

let's play the Spanish style!!!

Not bothered or worried if the same team had played tonight that played saturday the result would have been very different yeah a cup run would be nice but success in the league is imperitive, looks as though we will get andrews tomorrow (maybe, probably) and then there's ayala or another defender by the end of the week then it should be happy days.

As Bluelady says, Jewell clearly not bothered about the result and saw it as an opportunity to rest/try out fringe players which looking at some results tonight other teams have done. Not sure how you square that with wanting big nights ect.

Pfturner94 you really haven't got a clue have you. The only centre half who played badily was Smith (again). Ainsley kept everything simple and won most of his headers. Smith cost us another goal tonight and I don,t think he'll be playing much 1st team football this season.

JET on Twitter - "Can't f***ing believe we lost that game im mad as hell, Saturday well be back all guns blazing"

Hopefully all the squad will be hurting and take that same attitude to Saturday's game - Let's bounce back with a win!

Clearly not bothered about the result, which has been said before. As town fans, surely all we want is promotion this season? Going out can only be a good thing. Keith Andrews will bring a lot to our team; and another centre back will provide good competition, and hopefully a tighter defence that last year.

Town 22 sadly if we don't get at least one if not two cbs in I fear he will..... ainsley did look solid and as a right back by trade not bad with it at his feet. was destined for big things a while back then seemed to loose his way, hopefully he will now prove worth the suprise contract he was given.

Itfc94 I think its the players given their chance to win a first team place that should hang there heads in shame....... alb is a joke, not even league two standard.

Have to agree with bkuelady that those players who were given the chance tonight - and let's be honest, that's what PJ was doing - let themselves down. In particular, ALB makes me very worried about Stockdale being on 24 hour recall - I hope that Shwarzer stays fit - and Jamie P showed exactly why PJ doesn't pick him for league games. With those two holes in a defence it is little wonder that the other two inexperienced CBs had problems. The only defensive area that I was confident in was (unusually) left back, where I thought Cresswell looked the real deal.
