Jewell: Window a Pain
Jewell: Window a Pain
Tuesday, 30th Aug 2011 10:52

Town boss Paul Jewell says the transfer window is a "pain in the backside" and would prefer a return to the old system where clubs could do business throughout the season until the deadline in March. This summer's window closes at 11pm on Wednesday.

Jewell said: “I would do away with the transfer window because it’s a pain in the backside. Every time you put on the TV it’s the countdown to the transfer window. I know how many seconds it is to the transfer window shutting, which is ridiculous.

“Then the media have nothing to ask about for three months, certainly the Premier League guys, because everything gets condensed into the transfer window.”

The Blues boss would prefer a return to the old system: “I’d leave it the way it used to be. I don’t see with anything wrong with how it used to be.

“We used to have a transfer deadline on the last Thursday in March, which I think we all accepted because there were only so many games to go.”

He says the current arrangement favours the bigger Premier League sides: “When you’re talking about August and the transfer window closing, everyone has to be where they are after a certain time and the big clubs can carry a huge number of players without worrying about the financial aspect and other clubs can’t.

“When I was manager of Wigan we found it extremely difficult to get players in. What happens is that because we’re all desperate to get players in, prices get hugely inflated and it’s like a game of poker — if you don’t pay for the players, you don’t get them and you leave yourself short.

“Sometimes you’ll take players that maybe you wouldn’t because maybe you’d be a bit more selective if you had a bit more time.

“What happens if you buy two strikers the day before deadline day and they both get severely injured? You’re snookered, aren’t you?”

Despite making 11 signings this summer Jewell is still looking for further additions to his Town squad with the possibility of more players coming in before Wednesday’s deadline.

The Blues boss has also confirmed that he will look at adding to his squad when the ‘emergency’ loan option becomes available in a week’s time with Stoke’s Danny Collins looking a likely recruit at that point.

There could also be players moving out of Portman Road with Middlesbrough reported to have joined the clubs eyeing striker Jason Scotland.

The likes of Shane O’Connor, Jaime Peters and Tamás Priskin are all out of favour and look likely to leave at some point, while Portsmouth recently made an offer for skipper Grant Leadbitter.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Giovani Dos Santos has been linked with a move from Spurs to Wigan, having previously been mentioned in connection with Sevilla and Udinese amongst others this summer.

Bradders612 - I assume you're joking, but if not the Lone Ranger, or come to it Tonto would be a better bet....

Why the hell would Gio rather sign for us than Wigan???

If we were both in the prem that would be different - but we're not!

We Need Twelve More Before Wednesday says Jewell (or I'm off).

Sonko = Thetis. Nice comparison.

Hands up who's heard of Thetis! (Club stooges urgently going to Wikipedia).

Shake yourself up PJ. This is negative stuff. Time to move on/. What is IS. (Like the players you have) Make the most of it and stop bleating. They will do the job. Now it's up to you.

Its a bit depressing how many fans think they are the first to LATCH on to Phil's window gag.
My radical suggestion for the buying transfer window is a rolling buying window that closes earlier the higher up the league(s) you are (practically probably best to split the leagues into top an bottom halves). The idea is that this will encourage money to flow from richer clubs to poorer. The more successful you are the sooner your window closes so you end up paying slightly over the odds (probably) then your window closes and you can still sell but only to lower division teams. That way the big clubs dont buy important players at the last minute leaving small clubs unable to complete their squads and big clubs have no incentive to hold on to fringe players but can let them go out on loan or sell them knowing who they have bought.
I can dream.

I forgot to say that Phils window pun is a smashing gag.

Think PJ is getting his excuses in early for not getting any more players in!

Back_the_boss did it take long to think of that gag?!

I agree with your transferwindow idea Tractorog, it would be great! But it's never going to happen as the big clubs are the clubs with the most power, they'll never let it happen.
Gio would be a fantastic signing but I think it more important to get in a classy CB, RB and (back-up)keeper. Don't think Gio would sign anyway.
Come on PJ, get on the phone for the next 28 or so hours and sign them up!!!
Any of those he doesn't get now will probably arrive on loan, hope that's as little as possible!!!

With the benefit of a little modern-day Swedish, I can tell you that "window" comes from Old Norse "vindauga" ("wind" + "eye" - in other words, the house's "eye to the wind.") Just wanted to disprove the frequent allegation that I'm completely BLIND to things other than football!
