Jewell Targeting Three More
Jewell Targeting Three More
Tuesday, 30th Aug 2011 16:07

Town boss Paul Jewell says he is hoping to sign three more players with the transfer window due to close on Wednesday evening at 11pm. Defenders remain the Blues manager’s priority as he looks to take his summer signings beyond the 11 he has already made.

Jewell said: "There is some wheeling and dealing going on but it's out of my hands at the moment. We are waiting on two Premier League clubs about two players, both loans.

“They have their targets and if they can make that work, then they will look at freeing up the players we want. If they don't get in players, they won't release them.

"We have three targets in mind. Two are defenders, one isn't and we will have to see what develops over the next 24 hours, or when the loan window opens."

Stoke’s Danny Collins is likely to be one of the defenders, while a right-back could also be amongst those targeted. The other player is likely to be either a wide midfielder or goalkeeper, the two other areas where Town currently most need cover.

Jewell says he has received interest but no bids for any current members of his squad: “We have had a couple of enquiries for our players but no more than that and nothing that is of interest to us.

“In this mad world we live in, we might get something and I think you can have too many players in one position. But I am more interested in getting a couple of players in and I am under no pressure to get rid of people.”

Jason Scotland, who is believed to be back home in Trinidad at present, is thought to be interesting Coventry, Birmingham and Middlesbrough, and we understand Blackpool have also been eyeing the 32-year-old frontman.

Portsmouth could also make a renewed bid for skipper Grant Leadbitter having had an initial offer turned down earlier in the month.

PJ has done all he could by signing an almost completely new team as the squad Keano left him with was never going to get anywhere near promotion, with Mcauley and Norris leaving we could quite well have been relegated.
So far the signings he has made have been great, my only worries being too many old players and now, possibly, too many loanees.
We clearly need a CB and a RB, but I think a permanent goalie is almost just as important. I trust PJ to bring good players in to fill these gaps, as I am almost certain the third player is a goalie. I do hope he is confident he can make the loanees permanent is they do well, esspecialy the new RB (assuming the goalie is perm).
The team will benefit greatly from this two week break, getting in some much needed training and hopefully they will really start to gel now.
With the new signings we will have a really strong looking squad, and if they form a proper team this could be a really good season! I'm feeling more confident than I have done for a long while...
COYB!!!

I do worry over the amount of loan signings and whether this is a knee jerk to the thrashing we received early on.

If it is a loan with a view to buy, then fair enough, but do loan players really have the committment to the club?

The last thing we want is for 5 loanees to take us up to the Premiership and then leave.

Put the Sherry down son! McAuley was rubbish non tackling defender. Keane inherited Magic jim's mess. It is not easy for champ clubs to get rid of players unless they are young or consistently brilliant...

So the less time spenfds wasting his time with premiership clubs the better. Narwich's spine came from league one... nuff said really!

Bergholtblue. Even if the tea lady and 10 terrace stewards take us up to the Premiership it is good news. How can you say the loanees will then leave, they would be more likely to sign on permanent terms. Once the club gets its hands on the Premiership millions, replacements can be found AND players will want to join the club.

" I am under no pressure to get rid of people." I reckon he is just saying that to maximise sale. I think we'll see a departure tomorrow.

jaycee-agreed but I think it might be 2 to go leadbitter and martin and I think the 3rd player might be a wide player, so Collins suler/struna and ? is my bet.

Alfromcol - Not necessarily. Both Norwich and Swansea have tried to make big n ame signings and have failed. QPR has had knock backs but have started to get names in, probably due to the ondon connection.

Norwich and Swansea will both come back down at the end of the season. is that what you want? For Town to go up and down like a whore's drawers?

I don't I would rather bide my time in the Championship building and building until we have a team that can go up and stay up.

Lets scrap the academy then we could concentrate on developing the loanees.

Surely, if players are loans to buy, where's the problem if they are of good standard ? A good example is Keith Andrews !
Does anybody know if a price for Andrews has already been agreed [ otherwise I can imagine it creeping upward with each goal ] ?

Muhrensleftfoot, agreedabout some of the Magilton signings you list, his signings were generally ok but with some stinkers (Lisbie) thrown in for good measure and although we're split on whether McAuley, Norris and Wright were of good enough standards one thing's for sure, you're correct that due to Keanes mis management they all left on a free. We also haven't managed to replace David Wright with a permanent RB signing since he left last year. Let's hope that one of the players he brings in today fills that gap!

PJ targeting/ eyeing any of 40 or so players this summer. So what, give me some news. He's always eyeing and targeting. And he never lands any of them. Only frees and loans that no-one else wants. PJ out.
