Jewell and Evans Share Vision for Town
Jewell and Evans Share Vision for Town
Friday, 25th Nov 2011 08:59

Boss Paul Jewell believes the relationship between a manager and an owner is the most important at any football club. The Liverpudlian says working with Marcus Evans has been “terrific” and that the pair share a vision for Town.

Jewell hopes that given time he will be able to provide Evans with the Premier League football club he has been after since his takeover late in 2007: “Hopefully, long-term, I’ll be able to reward him with what everyone wants here.

"I’ve been here 10 months now and it seems like an awful lot has happened in that 10 months. He’s very supportive. We speak on the phone a couple of times a day if he’s available.

“It’s great, I think eventually that’s what makes something successful. The most important relationship in a football club is between the owner or the chairman and the manager.

“If that relationship is fragmented, then everything breaks up. Every manager talks about stability and continuity, but you do need a fair crack of the whip.”

The Blues boss says all managers need to be given time to succeed, no matter who they are: “Look at Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea. He was the dog’s whatever in the summer, now people are questioning whether he’s too young or whatever.

“It’s takes time. It’s easy to change, it’s easy to make rash decisions but I don’t think Marcus Evans does that in anything he does. I’m very comfortable with the relationship that we have. But at the end of the day we are in a results-driven business.

“I wonder how many games Alex Ferguson was away from the sack. We’re all a certain amount of time away from the sack, it’s just that some of us have got five games, some of us have got 25 games.

“Working with Marcus has been terrific because I think he’s got a vision, like I have, a long-term vision of where the club wants to be in the future.”

Meanwhile, Jewell says he has no plans to change his captain with Grant Leadbitter continuing to wear the armband if selected.

The Blues boss believes too much is made of the role in any case: “The captaincy is overrated in football, it’s not like it is in cricket or rugby.

"Grant’s never going to be the loudest but you can never question his workrate, his endeavour or his professionalism.

“In other ways he’s a good leader, leading by example rather than being someone who shakes his fist and goes around shouting and bawling."

It's good to hear they have a good relationship. Hopefully ME will do the honourable thing and sack PJ personally rather than leaving it to Clegg.

BEING CAPTAIN IS A BIG THING FFS JEWELL

WE DONT WANT OUR CAPTAIN REFUSING TO SIGN A DEAL.

If being captain is no big deal, give it to someone else. Not because he's leaving in the summer but because GL isn't good enough to be in the team every game

I believed that when he became manager that is was a good decision, but some of his signings have been about as good as Keano's.

I don't see where his "vision" will takes us with the huge gap between the remaining youngsters who need games (just not at Ipswich) and the blue rinse brigade that are playing at the moment..

The clock is ticking PJ..

What else is he supposed to say? ..... my relationship with ME is crap and he's hounding me constantly about why the team is failing and questioning my tactics and team selection and I've been warned that if we not challenging this year then I will be put back on Soccer Saturday full time for next season?

Blind leading the blind,Rover where are you?

If PJ put as much effort into managing as he does press conferences we'd be in the top six. We're no.t so stick to the training ground until there's some good news to spout on about.

Oh , I get it now - thats why we misplace passes and make 6 sideways and not one foward pass - GL is the talisman - give me a break PJ , he is the worst captain we have had in years - and professionalism - hmmm , Our Captain - leader on the field and he refuses to sign contract -

A shared 'vision' to get into the Premiership? Well, that's a surprise!!!

We shall not be able to do that with so many 'loanees' and players who are clearly not committed to the club (our captain, for a start).

I am amazed that PJ does not think the captain's role in football is not important....or is he just excusing the incompetence of the current captain in that role?

Jewell's got to be pro-active with the Leadbitter situation - all the power is in the player's hands and it's not like he's doing superb. Either sign up and be captain or we'll sell you in January and put yourself in the shop window even if that's off the bench.
His massive wages could be spent better elsewhere imo - our midfield has been limp since he joined really.

I wish Ferguson just ripped it from day 1 at Man United, then noone could point at that EXCEPTION TO THE RULE every time they are doing cack. At the end of the day, Jewell has signed all of his first choice starting 11 except Edwards (who he has given a new contract), Leadbitter (offered a contract, made captain undroppable) and Scotland (upon whom's trumpet his lips have been sat all season).
We have a right to expect some improvement! And with so much premiership experience we shouldn't be getting tonked every week!

I also give him 3 games to get this bunch performing. This isn't Keane's team anymore, and only a 6 match run where I feel we were underestimated by the opposition has there been any positives this season.
Even the team that knocked us out of the League Cup have been tonked 7-2 in a league match since they knocked us out!

Visioning is easy Mr Jewell but then you've got to plan how to achieve it and act accordingly. Nothing you have done since arriving suggests you are up to it in fact quite the opposite! These are just empty word.

His views on the captaincy are staggering in their naivety, and are simply wrong.

I also agree that Jewell is now the 3rd manager in a row who seems to be better with the media than with the players. With our current run of results, we'd all be better off if he would just shut up.

Captaincy not important?! Try telling that to Terry Butcher. Was immense at motivating the rest of the team.

"The most important relationship in a football club is between the owner or the chairman and the manager"

And how many successful relationships can you name that have been conducted entirely over the telephone??

I am pretty sure Jewell was talking about the importance of a good captain in pre season, along with the other tripe he usually comes out with...

Three words - LOST. THE. PLOT.

Some Town Fans are laughable! The stick Jewell is getting from some fans is outrageous. 6games unbeaten, and we're promotion business, Jewell is a good manager, now 4 losses on the spin, and we're in a relegation battle etc and Jewell out!
Most on this site expect the business to happen overnight!! Reality is that nothing good happens every night!! Norwich are taking the piss out of us at the moment, challenging in the premier league. Theyve built a young squad over years, theyve stuck with their manager, and the ended up in 3rd teir of football before becoming where they are. Lets get rid of the boo boys again and get behind the team and manager. Cleeg is a cock, as we all know it, and ticket prices are much too high, but that is all out of our control, and Jewells aswell. Lets try and be upbeat and get behind the team. Jewell will do the buissiness im sure of it. Il put my house on us staying up aswell!!
