Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Thursday, 1st Dec 2011 16:18

Blues boss Paul Jewell says club owner Marcus Evans was “hugely supportive” of him when he spoke to him last night in the wake of Town’s sixth successive defeat at Burnley on Tuesday. The Liverpudlian says Evans has a long-term plan for the club which includes him remaining as manager.

Jewell said: “When I spoke to Marcus last night, he was hugely supportive of me. I’m a big boy, I know how it works and it’s not so long ago that Steve Bruce [sacked yesterday by Sunderland] was being touted as the next England manager.

“Marcus has told me to just keep going. He’s got long-term plans for the club and he wants me to be the manager.

“Until I’m told any different, nothing will change. I’ll always do my best. I don’t feel as if it’s a hopeless case, I feel that it’s really tough at the moment, really tough, but not much comes easy in life.”

The ex-Wigan and Bradford boss says he was unaware that he had been handed a vote of confidence by the club’s chief executive until earlier today: “I didn’t know that until this morning when Simon Clegg rang me and said he’d come out in support of me.

“I spoke to the owner last night, he’s away on business. I don’t read papers or whatever, win, lose or draw, so I wasn’t aware of the dreaded vote of confidence he’s given me.

“I’m a big boy, I’ve been manager for nearly 550 games, so everything that happens in the game, good, bad or indifferent, I’ve seen it.”

Jewell says he still believes he can turn things around: “I just have to try my best. Everyone at the moment is telling you you’re not very good at your job, but you’ve got to be strong and you’ve got to have belief in your ability and I think I am good at what I do.

“But I’m always learning, I’m always trying to get better. What else can I do? Do you want me to hide under the table, run away or close the door? I don’t want to that. You feel like doing it sometimes but eventually you have to come out and face the music.”

"Now we have a squad, at least of a reasonable quality"

Reasonable enough to have lost us six games on the bounce and reasonable enough to have us in the relegation places (all bar a goal difference)

Reasonable enough to have a bar 7 off them out of contract (and so probably gone by next June)

How much of this is due to PJs incompetence and how much is down to lack of funds maybe a debatable point but to claim we have a reasonable squad is not debatable. This is probably the worst bunch of tired out, 'aged has beens', distinterested cast offs and 'want a away failures' that have worn the colours for many a long decade.

If this is the best we can put together after receiving £8m from the sale of Wickham then something is seriously wrong, and I doubt that will change much whethere PJ is here or some other hopeful is sat in the managers chair.

What are the long term plans ME apart from the obvious? And are you really going to achieve this with this clueless manager! With the players we have we should doing considerably better and that has to be down to the manager. Its his team. What else can you do Jewell? You can leave us so we can stay in the championship and rebuild with some energy and passion.

If you do your best and it still doesn't work then what Mr Jewell ??

You have my sympathy but the club is more important than you !!

Well lucky you PJ never thought you were right for this club and you have not won me over or many others looking at this site. If ME wants to throw his money away with you in charge thats up to him but I wont pay to watch it you have lost the dressing room and are losing the supporters i suspect before too long more players will be brave enough to say they would rather play for someone else and when you are gone we will find out what a sham you really are. And as for playing the reserve team its mainly the oldies that dont play first team he has even ruined that

Agree with smelliott - get behind the team sat against Watford and see what we can do. We all now we do have some decent players.... We all thought thought bowyer and bullard would be good players same as jewell prob did but no one was moaning when we 1st signed them..... Not enought blame is put on these overpaid players it's all directed towards PJ.

The players need to pull their fingers out and start putting the effort in or f#ck off we want hungry players that will put their bodies on the line (with the exception of Collins and cresswell) the rest of you sort it out coz ur letting the fan down and ur manager!!!!!

All this negativity..I believe that he'll get it right and things will change for the better. I'd love to see a bit more youth,
All us armchair managers are entitled to an opinion, but enough of the bad stuff and lets get behind what we have.
I'm sure the players are hurting as well, they don't go out to lose, so lets get behind them this Saturday and kick some Hornets arse!!

Come on PJ and the boys.

Newboy - why didn't u think PJ was right for this club then????
He got 2 promotions to the premier league and Wigan playing a good style of football in the championship and premier league so he clearly has a clue. Who would you put in charge????

If PJ remains, I can see attendances falling to around 12,000 (ITFC fans that is). I predicted that in June and stick by it. PJ is NOT a good manager and it's just a shame that ME can not admit to making a huge mistake in appointing him.

However, remember the leaflet handed out at PR with ME saying Jim had his full backing - and how he wouldn't be influenced by fans/papers? A few weeks later he was sacked. Ditto to less of an extent Roy. Let's just hope PJ goes the same way as he is WORSE than both of those. Incredible - but the worst run of results (all competitions) since 1994 backs that up.

tactics or lack of them are the problem at the moment is he playing a system the players are comfortable with- i think almost definetly not-why not revert back to the 4-3-3 system-with more width so messrs bullard and andrews actually have an outlet when they have the ball! if we have half decent players which we think we have then pj maybe has to listen as well and discuss things with all the players to sort us out-who is the voice in the dressing room i wonder as we dont have areal captain within the team-so maybe all the senior players are disgruntled as we are with these negative tactics!!players like bowyer bullard andrews etc have vast experience so maybe they are as baffled by pjs direction as what we are-remember how poorly johnny walters was under keane now look at him!players need to be happy within a system to perform surely.

I saw George Burley in the Buttermarket yesterday, I very much doubt he does his xmas shopping in Ipswich!

Have to admit that there is a gulf between us and the Club down the other end of A140 now - can no longer compare the two Clubs in any way, shape or form.
This situation should never have been allowed to develop - we are now 'officially' the dross of Anglia. And look like staying that way.

Will pre-empt the moronic comment which is sure to follow:- 'why don't you go and join them then' - fact of it is, some may well do just that unfortunately, or turn to following a reasonable level of local football at MUCH less drain on the pocket.

Club will probably be sold after the Olympics anyway - so perhaps there is still some hope.

Never sure with stats- but this is interesting-
Chris Hutchings has replaced Jewell on 3 occasions as Caretaker Manager. yes, 3!!! At least we have consistency there. Good thing is it shows Hutchings is used to taking over the reigns when PJ has gone.

h32-
Used to disagree with you constantly. I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong. This club is clueless, has no long-term plan and is going nowhere fast.
Sadly, Norwich are much better than us at the moment. I REALLY hope we are not at home to Norwich in the FA Cup. Right now they would thrash us 8 or 9-0.
The team has no guts and no pride.
We are in our worst run in all competitions since 1994.
We are on the edge of the relegation zone with a bunch of Premiership wannabees who aren't up for the necessary fight.
Nothing less than a good win against Watford please to settle supporters nerves. Instead we will most likely turn around and take a good thrashing

How did he know it was Marcus Evans? Maybe it was Marcus Evans driver being hugely supportive.

h32, you are correct. Our 6 fingered friends up the A140 are miles ahead of us now in terms of attracting new support throughout East Anglia. It,s a no brainer really for potential new fans, crap championship football or the cream of the worlds players every fortnight at LESS cost.A budgie supporting chum of mine told me last week his season ticket was a tad over £400. Mine was near on £600. If you have indded had the vote of confidence Mr Jewell, i,d start packing your suitcase now. I also would like to hear these statements from our elusive owner, not clown Clegg.
