Jewell: I've Survived Difficult Spells Before
Jewell: I've Survived Difficult Spells Before
Friday, 2nd Dec 2011 14:51

Paul Jewell admits that life is tough at Portman Road at present, but says he has come through similarly difficult spells before when manager at Bradford and Wigan.

Jewell said: “No one’s never had setbacks. When I was at Bradford we went up in my first year but after seven games people wanted me out. We came here and lost 3-0 to Ipswich. But after that we turned it around.

“At Wigan, everyone thought we were going to win [what's now League One] because Dave Whelan was paying decent wages.

“I remember the day that England beat Germany 5-1 we didn’t play because we’d got a number of internationals and I’d gone to Cambridge to watch Wade Elliott play for Bournemouth.

“Because we hadn’t played, we went to the bottom of the league. That was in the October/November time. That was pretty low.”

But he says gradually things started to move in the right direction: “We finished mid-table that year and the next year, after I’d had the squad together for a year, we won the league with 100 points.

“I’m not saying we’re going to win the league with 100 points next year, but sometimes there’s a lot of stuff to get through.

“All the decisions I make, I’ve got to get them right and over a period of time I’m convinced I will. But at this moment, people are questioning me, and I fully understand that.”

'PJ bought Bullard and Chopra fully knowing of their personal issues. (probably the only reason we landed them) '

And the only reason we were lumbered with the other injury prone has beens. If all we are able to attract is the detrius that is left after other clubs have had their pick then the problems go far deeper than a change of manager. And also suggests that if we can't attract decent players, then what hope for a decent manager either ?

These players may have looked good on paper, if it was the sports pages of a few sesaons back. When we are having to scrabble around for players that Reading, Hull and Birmingham don't want, to drag an injury prone keeper out of 'retirement at 34 when Sheff Utd didn't want him then there is something badly wrong.

Something wromg that so many promising players have got to the stage of agreeing to join us then at the last moment gone elsewhere. Even a scout took to his heels within a few weeks. Players such as McAuley, Norris and Leadbitter as good as walking out on us. Lavery likewise and now we can't even tie Carson down to a contract.

Simon Clegg remains silent and Marcus Evans remains hidden. All we have is the ever more desperate Paul Jewell and his increasingly dispairing woes being printed on a daily basis. Perhaps one day we will be told the real story. The truth. Though maybe ignorance is better as I think the truth may not be too pretty.

So has Harry Potter.

Win tomorrow... please? I have predicted a 5-2 win. Bizarre I know but we MUST win sooner rather than latter - ditto against Warford.

4-4-2... with Scotland & Chops up top, defence bolstered by Sonks. Let's want it boys - show some backbone and for Christ sake - somebody get booked! Put a foot in, actually want the ball, get a tackle in...... GET STUCK IN and make an effort.

PJ needs a win or two or he'll be watching James Bond on Boxing Day at home with wife, not at the King Power Stadium.

After you'd had the squad together for a year? Well that means half the squad this time next year will be collecting their pensions. YOUTH AND PACE.. WITH A SPRINKLING OF EXPERIENCE.. RECIPE FOR A PREMIER DISH.

he doesn't know what a difficult spell is, most of us don't , life is just to damn good for us westerners. like keane i am sure jewel has plenty of cash, a privileged life after his entry into football ,his years of big wages for playing a game he loves ....like the current squad he has it to easy they should be out picking winkles in the middle of winter to earn a crust

Tractatastic - don't forget Billy Davies didn't actually have the best time at Derby either, didn't Jewell replace him?
