Doncaster Confirm Sharp Release Clause
Doncaster Confirm Sharp Release Clause
Monday, 19th Dec 2011 09:24

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan has confirmed that there is a release clause in striker Billy Sharp’s contract with interested parties needing to offer £3 million in January for it to be triggered. The Blues, Southampton, Cardiff, Burnley and Leicester have all recently been linked with the 25-year-old.

Ryan, keen to end speculation regarding the activation figure, said: "When the window opens on January 1st, Billy's contract with Doncaster Rovers will include a release clause priced at exactly £3 million.

"Lots of clubs are circling. Southampton and Ipswich made previous bids. Anybody who matches that new figure can talk to Billy.”

But the Rovers chief says he’s keen to keep Sharp, who has scored nine goals this season, at the Keepmoat Stadium if he can: "Obviously, we don't want to lose the lad at this vital stage when we are fighting to retain our Championship status.

"I've given my word to Billy, though. We have a gentlemen's agreement and any final decision on a move is down to Billy himself."

In the summer the Blues had a £2.3 million offer rebuffed by the South Yorkshiremen, while the player turned down a move to Southampton after the clubs agreed a fee of £3.25 million, with the release clause only understood to come into effect from January. Sharp is contracted to Doncaster until the summer of 2013.

Surely if we have money it should be spent on the defence and into midfield first? And please, pretty please, can we filter out posts with the word Rhodes in them?

blues 1, it does'nt take a financial expert to realise that the club is losing money on 17K gates and yes we are in debt, the balance sheet says so but hey just dream on if you think everything is rosy and we have plenty of cash to splash, think again when January arrives and people like Sharp go elsewhere.

Billy Sharpe, a centre back, a right back, a goalkeeper, a holding midfielder (assuming Hyam is not in PJ,s plans). I,ts going to be a busy transfer window Mr Clegg. I wont be holding my breath though.

Never ever gonna happen in a month of sundays!!!!!!!!! Pj aint got a prayer with this one, never gonna pay £3 mil on a striker when defenders and gk needed, can't see ME sanctioning this as much as we all think he would be a good signing!!

Please Rhodes is not up to this league; why are we going down this backwards road again. I would choose Billy sharpe any day than JR as he is not proven in this division like sharpe.

Billy Sharp. Billy SHARP. Not Billy SHARPE! :L sorry guys i'ma perfectionist ! Anyway we have the top brick just not anything to put it on, I mean we have the strikers just no-on to give them the chances. Need: GK, RB, CB, 1 or 2 young creative midfielders. :D

Billy Sharp is a great player but this is not a position where Ipswich are weak. We could have RVP up front and he wouldn't score goals for us as we can't create chances. We constantaly hit high hopeful balls. We need some quality in midfiled which we still haven't got. Sorry all those Andrews and Bullard fans but both too slow imo.
Andrews has contributed much in the way of goals however.
Buy a hungry pacey midfielder to keep us in the division.

If Rhodes had stayed at Ipswich would he be in the first team or still knocking about in the 2nd team and playing the odd cup match.
Rhodes was sold for a good price for a play who had a couple of sub games, he has gone out a learnt his trade so in my eyes is now a better striker than he would have been playing 2nd team football.
Not proven at championship level so would be a gamble if we brought him and he would still cost around the £2 to £3 million mark
so for me Sharpe is a better bet still young and can score goals at this level and feel he could do a job in the prem dont think Rohdes would

'tractorboy2434. you keep going on about iur perilous finances? we dont have any, as any debt we have is purely to M.E. so unless he suddenly decides he wants out & wants his money back, while we may have a debt, we dont owe anyone but him, we dont owe the banks a penny. so therefore if M.E. feels it right to spend £3m on sharp(presuming P.J. wants him), then im sure we will be trying to sign him.'

I think you'll find that our finances will need a hefty improvement before they can be considered perilous. The current state of the club suggest that we would struggle to find £3 nevermind £3m.

Ask yourself why we were told that none of the money from walters would be available for players. Why we have brought in so many freebies and aged cast offs. Why when we had a keeper shortage we could only afford the injury prone Wright.

At the moment forthcoming rules will require a massive cut in our wage bill to comply with those directives. At the moment (and for the foreseeable future) the idea of signing the likes of Sharpe are way, way beyond our means.. Get used to it.

Dont worry about cutting the wage bill , we have 18 out of contract at the end of season that should save us £10 million.

Clegg might drop the price of the season ticket then (well it is nearly Christmas)

Have you ever thought that the reason we have frees and loans is because the targets of PJ did not want to come here and we had to take what was available rather than what was wanted ! It is time for a lot of the posters on here got real and realised that not every player , whatever we may think of our clubs standing , wants to come here and we have to make do with what will come !

Buy him, tell misskin to sod off, Ellington he needs to prove himself, and play JET as a winger, where he was pretty decent for Cardiff last year.

Gary Roberts seems to do a good job setting Rhodes up, glad he is having a decent career beyond town.

I noticed in the 4 -4 game between sheff wed and hudds, hudds fielded 6 or 7 ex town players lol.
