O'Connor on Trial at Southend
O'Connor on Trial at Southend
Wednesday, 4th Jan 2012 09:24

Left-back or midfielder Shane O’Connor has joined League Two Southend United on trial. The 21-year-old returned from his one-month loan spell at Port Vale at the weekend without making a first-team appearance for the Valiants.

Irish U21 international O’Connor, whose Town contract is up at the end of the season, is very much out of Paul Jewell’s plans with his only appearance under the current manager a 16-minute cameo as a sub in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at Arsenal last January.

One-time Liverpool trainee O'Connor is set to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester today.

Old bluestu you are in serious denial if you think carson is going to stick around as long as these muppets are in charge he will be long gone with many of the other younger players

There is something strange about this situation and perhaps there is a very big missing piece of the puzzle. He has generally shown well in the 22 games that he featured in for Ipswich and certainly impressed me on the two occasions that I have seen hm play.He was one of our best players v Leicester and was unlucky to injure his shoulder Perhaps he has an attitude issue...but do we know that or are we guessing? If we agree that the raw talent and fire in the belly was there in 2009 and 2010, then what are we doing to nurture, develop and motivate our youngsters beyond that point? To those that suggest that Cresswell and Carson are ahead of him I would say that we need at least two options for every position...Cressy has the occasional stinker and our players do get injured.
So what's the full story here? Any insights Phil?

Well i think its unfair to say O 'Connor is a bad player cos he has the potential but from what i hear from people who work at club is his atttude to training is negative therefore he doesn't get picked for teams as he never tries in training. This is the same with Luke Hyam.

Thanks for your input Alice. If your sources are accurate then that explains a lot except for why there is a change in attitude of O'Connor and Hyam. Hope that this is not a reemergence of the lack of effort on the part of some players that Shane Supple divulged. It saddens me when players don't try whether in a Sunday pub league or as paid professionals.

Isn't one of the fundamental problems with our youngsters that they can't get regular Reserve team football? (the same applies for squad members). Instead we have adhoc 'friendly' games.

Never going to keep their fitness and/or skills fresh if this is the situation.
