Crawley's Tubbs Linked Wednesday, 11th Jan 2012 09:12
Town are set to make a move for Crawley striker Matt Tubbs, according to one of this morning's tabloids. The 27-year-old has scored 17 goals in 26 starts and one sub appearance for the League Two leaders this season, having netted 40 times last season as the Red Devils were promoted from the Blue Square Bet Premier as champions.
The 5ft 9in tall frontman played youth football at Bolton, Bournemouth and Dorchester, making his breakthrough into first team football with the latter, before moving on to hometown club Salisbury in 2003, scoring regularly as his side climbed into the Blue Square Bet Premier.
A loan spell with Bournemouth in League Two in 2008 yielded one goal in six starts and two appearances from the bench.
He moved on to Crawley for £70,000 in July 2010 and was named in the divisional team of the year as his side carried off the title, his goals having played a significant role in that success.
This season, playing alongside on-loan Town midfielder Andy Drury for three months of the campaign, the former England C cap has continued his goalscoring form.
Crawley are reported to want £500,000 for Tubbs, who was recently the subject of a failed bid from former loan club Bournemouth.

I can't see the point of us getting another striker, its not where we're lacking. we need a rb, cb and possibly a midfielder who doesn't earn £20,000 a week. I think we should put Murphy up front tonight again Birmingham with Scotland. Martin on the left, Hyam and Leadbitter in the middle and Carson on the right. Hyam looked decent last year until he got sent off against reading.
This is exactly the sort of player we need, if he don't cut it, no loss. If he does, he is worth a mint. Buy a has been, if he works out, he is worth nothing as he is too old, if he does not work out, he is still worth nothing.
Proven goalscorer 2 and 3 divisons down but let's not caried away by him. He is 27 and whilst I accept that the likes of Ian Wright only came into the game late, the question has got to be if he is good enough for The Championship why wasn't he been picked up earlier?
An eager hungry striker - we do need- whats the catch?
Hyam looks lost in a 4 in midfield especially one that is under pressure like ours. Hard to say if he has improved on Hull performance but he could be the anchor in a 5 we need if Bowyer is fit and Bullard can ever be bothered to play again, with Martin/ Edwards (surely we will get a rb) on the right and Murphy/ Carson Left we would have a formation that is yet to fail this season
I think he is the right age and of the right pedigree to do the business for Town. What we desperately need up fron is a one in two game scorer and this is something we have not had since Shefki kugi and Darren Bent. Maybe this is the man?
We have precious few strikers who deliver - I think Murray should be in side as well - Yes we need 3 defenders and 3 midfielders IMO but this is the TYPE of player that I believe will help us move forward
Hmmm - Vardy (Fleetwood) the better option IMO and don't we have our own diminutive young striker who maybe needs a chance? Stop messing around and sign some players we need!
cheap? - relative to some rubbish Town have bought yes great? - maybe but unproven at this level so time would tell. Needed? - well not as big of a priority as RB and at least 1 CB are far more important IMO. The lack of changes in these 2 positions is the greatest problem at PR along with a midfield that goes missing for great portions of the match. Historically when Town have had poor defensive records we have scored plenty of goals and would win through having scored more but we are not scoring many and conceeding by the bucket load! Can't see the right result tonight and home on Saturday looks very tough too compared to NFFC, where we were awful again. COYB
I remember some people saying the same about Ricky Lambert and look how well he's done this season. Looks like a good shout but I'd rather see us signing defenders right now.
All the talk about Tubbs is good I agree but his strike partner is 1 year younger and has as many goals this season.....yet who has heard of Tyrone Barnett? Maybe worth a punt also.
