Jewell: Targets All Youngsters
Jewell: Targets All Youngsters
Tuesday, 17th Jan 2012 06:34

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that all three of the targets the Blues made bids for over the weekend are young players, with one a teenager.

Jewell refused to be drawn on their precise identities but told the club site: "What I will confirm is that the three players are aged 24 and under.

“While we can't sign every player under 20, we are definitely going to put the emphasis on bringing younger players to the football club.

"I'm on record already in saying that I got the balance wrong in terms of the number of older players we brought in.

"We need experience in the side and in the squad but looking forward and for the long-term future of the club, we will be focusing on younger players. The three players we have made bids for fall into that category, in fact one is a teenager."

We understand that despite the Blues showing interest in Swindon pair Matt Ritchie and Paul Caddis, the duo are not the two players from the same club that Jewell revealed had been targeted over the weekend.

Left-footed right winger Ritchie in particular, however, is a player who has impressed the Blues on their regular visits to the County Ground to monitor the progress of on-loan striker Ronan Murray this season. Talks are ongoing with the Robins regarding the Irish U21 international's future.

Meanwhile, Leicester are reported set to hand a start to Sean St Ledger, whose move to the Blues was halted last week, when they play Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup replay this evening. St Ledger hasn't played for the Foxes since being involved in a bust-up with manager Nigel Pearson after he was left out of their side facing Town on Boxing Day.

Elsewhere, Colchester boss John Ward has dismissed rumours linking the Blues with defender Magnus Okuonghae: “Ipswich have not spoken to me about Magnus."

Ex-Blue Hermann Hreidarsson has completed his move from Portsmouth to Coventry, signing a deal until the end of the season.

BTW Simon, the transfer winfdow cloese on 31st Jan 2012, that's two weeks today. So clear the decks and concentrate on that before you start any more
charts or interior design projects.

It's Ferdinand and hall I reckon form Southend

......connections from Southend would make more sense as previously PJ has stated the difficulty in getting people located down here....so why not look after each other and loan and sell around the East.....means they can also go home to get their undies washed as they are going to need a few pairs when they join our defence!!!
....who ever it is lets get someone (aka Cresswell) that we can at least get excited by

Cant we just wait and see instead of guessing!!

We'll make low offer, it'll be rejected and then we'll fanny around for the next week. So i think it's 50:50 if we'll get anyone.

Jewell is obviously receiving full confidence from Evans which is important. I do believe that at any other club, his record of 2 wins in 15 games would result i him being sacked. We just dont operate like that! Especially with two non footballing business men running the club.

Like all Town fans, I believe that the priority has to lie in signing a commanding central defender, a right back and a striker.

My fear is that our squad already accumulates such a large wage bill, thanks to Jewels policy of signing ex Prem players, that we wont be able to afford to make the permanent signings that we need.

I hope that he is able to sign these players on permanent contracts and give the team some stability and allow the manager to pick a more settled side week in week out.

If this happens and we can start to defend better, we will be safe for another season and Jewell will keep his job. Otherwise, we will reach perhaps the lowest point in our history.

Get behind the team and keep the faith

I would really like to see the tottenham right back Adam Smith join us! If it is Ferdinand and Hall from Southend they would be decent signings, get st ledger in and things may start to look up.

Let's not forget this speculation is only in reference to the 3 bids lodged over the weekend! I am assuming we already have other bids in on more players - hopefully with more experience, especially at CB. Also, I can't understand why we have not tried to snap Billy Sharp up as we offered more for him before than what he would cost now and we are in a worse situation with strickers than ever.

Finally the penny has dropped. What a shame it has taken so long - we are now burdened with these big wage earners for a couple of years - or have had to spend more money paying them off. Terrible management.

This is promising news though. I still do not agree that PJ is the man to lead us forward - time will tell - but this is a step in the right direction.

Lets see who he brings in first before we get carried away.

People getting carried away, based on supposition and conjecture?

That would never happen.

I watched Crewe v Morecambe a few weeks ago and was impressed by full back Matt Tootle and winger Byron Moore. They looked worth a punt.

Anyone can place bids. We can bid for Messi if we want.
It all depends if the bid is enough for the club/clubs to accept and if the player wants to come here.
At the present moment all i can see coming here is unproven youngsters and over the hill ex prem players!
Personaly i would go for youth every time. At least they can be developed.

well done for PJ for admitting the balance is wrong, we did see a big improvement for 60 mins with a younger side on Saturday.
not that many people on here will give PJ credit for admitting this!

Tractamatt added 12:43 - Jan 17
There is nothing to say that it's not 3 youngsters and that we then go ahead and get McManus although to some degree the St Leger deal is done all bar the paperwork so I would not be surprised to see 3 youngsters and an older centre half bought in,although the bids have to be accepted of coarse.
