Jewell: Defensive Changes Haven't Helped Us
Jewell: Defensive Changes Haven't Helped Us
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 08:19

Boss Paul Jewell says the Blues’ defensive woes haven’t been helped by regular changes of personnel with Town having fielded four keepers and 10 different centre-half partnerships this season. However, he believes a lack of confidence and psychological factors have also led to the Blues conceding more league goals than anyone else in the division, 51, and having a tendency to let leads slip, with 18 points having been dropped from winning positions.

Jewell says the central defensive situation has been more of an issue than goalkeepers: “We had Stocky at the start of the season before he was called back, so it’s not as if we’ve been chopping and changing goalkeepers every week.

“But other than Danny Collins and Sonko when we won that run of games, we haven’t had any [regular] centre-half pairing, and then Sonks got injured.

“There’s been chopping and changing because of injuries and suspensions. It’s been unfortunate and I think that’s added to the problems.”

The Blues manager says mental issues are perhaps more significant: “I think confidence-wise and psychologically we’ve suffered - as soon as that board goes up you can almost see the trepidation in the players’ faces because we’ve been done so often [late on].

“We’ve just got to get over that hurdle, we’ve got to be strong men, have a stronger mentality. Sometimes we seem to turn a corner. We got a clean sheet against Derby, we were looking decent against Leicester, and again we gave away a daft penalty and it cost us three points.

“Little things. Just when we’ve been making progress we’ve had the rug pulled from under us, and most of it has been down to ourselves, we’ve shot ourselves in the foot.”

PJ dosen't show any strength of character and neither does his team. No wonder he failed at Liverpool under Paisley.

This is entirely PJ's fault. How could he expect to have consistent performances with the pile of ------ he's been signing. From the moment McAuley was off the signing of TWO CENTRAL DEFENDERS were the first priority but instead didnt react at all and when he started all he got was Ivan the terrible, injury prone Sonko and short term loan Collins to add to DD and Smith. On top of that he couldnt see that Carlos is at best only a makeshift rb (much better in attacking role) so is it any wonder we've got the leakiest defence in the league!!
When it was clear that Collins was going to return home he must have made a replacement TOP PRIORITY but he's wasting time when relegation is staring Town in the face.
Get on with it Jewell or get out and let someone else take over.

PJ 100% to blame for this. We released 2 PERMANENT GK's in the Summer - with the exception of Wright (short-term deal) PJ failed to bring in a new keeper who could establish a place in the team for the next season or two. Even now, he opted for yet another LOAN.

As for the CB situation - well again PJ is to blame. He knew McAuley would be leaving. He failed to replace. He brought in Ingimarsson - a man who he subsequently paid off. PJ FAILED to address the defence in the Summer and thus had to bring in a LOAN in Collins and a freebie (with poor injury record) in Sonko. It's now 19th January and STILL no new CB - no doubt we will get another loan.

It's pointless PJ moaning - he had the opportuity to address it in the Summer and has relied on loans. So what does he expect?

Kropotkin123:
Fair enough that my metaphor wasn't perfect, ummm, that's kinda why it's a metaphor... A metaphor is a devise that enables an individual to throw light on a situation that they otherwise wouldn't understand by linking it to a concept they are familiar with. For me, that's being a teacher. BuryBlue77 similarly used the metaphor of his work-experience.
The fact that you don't relate to it doesn't mean it's rubbish, however, but rather it's not a metaphor that works for you.
Anyway, in regard to your points:
No, I didn't start with hardly any students - BUT - I did start with other people's classes that I inherited from them AND I don't get to sack those I don't like and buy others!
I don't really understand your point about having to by (sic) other students?? No, you're right, I don't have that opportunity - it'd be great if I COULD choose my own though... :)
No, there also aren't tens of thousands of fans moaning. I do have thousands of parents with unreasonable expectations though and the kids are sometimes pretty adept at moaning too.
No, I don't get a bunch of other professionals in their field to help me out - likewise, I'd LOVE it if I did.
As for your statement at the end about, "It's no wonder..." Well, I think it's fair to say that it's rather a generalisation. I actually achieved 100% achievement results in my GCSE class this year. I did this through sheer hard work, motivation, encouragement and by bringing out the very best in each and every individual. Some of those kids are achieving far less in other subjects - it's the responsibility of each teacher to succeed.
If I fall below these achievements I absolutely WON'T be blaming anyone else for my failure, or asking for their sympathy.

Finally, I do all of this on substantially less than 10% of what Mr Jewell will be making this year.... :(

what is p.j. on about not chopping and changing keepers! why the hell wasnt lee barrett in goal last saturday!!!!.was he injured ? why do we keep dropping form players.when we get these loan signings is there some sort of black mail clause that if they decide to come on loan it's to play only? i thought we had hired an experienced coach. for me admitting mistakes that we could all blatantly see week in week out does'nt give the vibes of someone who knows what he is doing...:Z

Please stop talking about teaching. It was a METAPHOR, a good one at that.
Really do feel this is an excuse from PJ. He already has the perfect reason in place for being unable to sign any centrebacks (i.e. we need consistency).

It's your job to sort it and, after a year, it should have been sorted by now.

Stop talking about it and deal with it!
