Jewell: The Kids Are All Right
Jewell: The Kids Are All Right

Blues boss Paul Jewell says his younger players will be very unfortunate if they are dropped for Saturday’s game at Leeds after impressing during last week’s 2-2 draw with Blackpool. Luke Hyam, Josh Carson and Tommy Smith all came into the side which came close to beating the Seasiders.

Jewell said: “I think every week is a selection poser. But you want problems in the right way. I felt the young lads did terrific, not just the young lads, the older lads as well.

“Everyone’s been speaking about what a young team we had out on Saturday against Blackpool and those lads haven’t done themselves any harm. If you don’t play on Saturday and you played last week, you can consider yourself unlucky.”

While the Blues boss says the age of his squad wasn’t called into question when they were winning, he is looking for more balance with more youthful players being targeted in this transfer window: “Nobody mentioned age when we were having that six-game spell when we were as good as anyone in the division, but I think for the future of the club we need to be looking at younger players.

“Getting a blend is the most important thing. We want young players but we want experience as well.”

Overall, Jewell feels his side has played well in their last few games without getting their just rewards: “The last two performances, against Birmingham and Blackpool, probably warranted more than the one point we got from the two games.

“I thought the performance against Blackpool, certainly until they scored, was excellent. We were in their faces, we played some good football, we were aggressive in the tackle and we played with a good tempo.

“We were obviously disappointed not to win, it felt like a loss after the game. But Blackpool are a decent team, they’ve been together for a while, they were in the Premier League last year and have aspirations of getting back in there.

“There was lots to be positive about. Conceding two goals was obviously disappointing but there were a lot of plus points.”

Stick with the same team unless injured.

The youngsters became tired and conceded two goals. So keep playing them, its the only way to get them 90 minutes match fit.

95 minutes preferably.

Who is picking the team?
Surely it is in Jewell's hands to pick them - unless Clegg/Evans have a finger in the pie.

@ Mutiny
Jewell is picking the team, he just hates young players that he didn't buy himself! He should know what team he's playing and be coaching said team to play Leeds - but he's just remembered that he went on a 6 game unbeaten run back in October and is going to chuck in the cynical old pros! The ones who lost at Burnley and Millwall!
Those youngsters are going to be very unfortunate when I drop them for cack in blue shorts

THIS team needs to show early success to at least provide the basis for a couple more good signings at next window.

Exactly WTF is PJ even talking about dropping anyone. Up to the point he made the mind blowingly stupid decision to put Priskin on and take Carson off that was the best effort I have seen all season ( I missed the Brighton match) just leave it alone and let them get on with it. Show some belief.

Would rather see Hyam playing anyday of the week over Leadbitter.

Carsey

The Priskin sub was to see if he wanted to play for the club and his body language and effort said no, thats why he has been let go.

"if any get dropped" not "I am going to drop"

If Jewell keeps the same team and we lose it will be Jewell out etc if we win it will be "Told you so" the bloke will never win.

Jewell will have to pick a system to play against Leeds so some may have to be replace to acommadate the system.

Carson was looking tired on Saturday so that was the reason for his sub

I hope I am wrong, but "If you don't play on Saturday and you played last week, you can consider yourself unlucky." Translates as ... "I will be dropping some of the youngsters"... which also translates as "I don't learn"

Whilst i dont think the younger players are the answer to everything as some of the people on here do, I think that if younger players see the same old farts being picked regardless of effort and results, it is bound to lead to a decline in a club that was once famed for being a production line for young talent.
